I've had a lisp since I've first learned how to talk, well it isn't a lisp it's with my t's and d's and I use the roof of my mouth to say them and not the back of my teeth but I went to see a speech therapist and she told me the problem and what to do to make it better so I can pronounce them properly. A few weeks on I went to the dentist and he said that my teeth are really nice and asked if I had any problems so I told him about my two twisted teeth at the front and he referred me to the orphadontics. I went a few days ago and they told me I needed a brace (one that is glued so I can't take it out) and that my mouth is over crowded and that if I did decide to have one then I would have to wear it for 18 month - 2 years.I'm slightly worried aswell because the man at the orphadotics said that if I don't have a brace now then my teeth would only get worse and I would need them doing when I'm older but it would cost me thousands but because I'm 15 then its free so it would be better for me to get them done now.My problem is if I do have a brace won't it make my speech worse and more difficult to talk and maybe even give me a lisp with my S's? Also braces don't look very attractive so if I do have one I'll have it till I'm nearly 18 so who will want a girl whos got braces at that age :/ and can you even kiss wtih braces? x

Dont worry, loads of people I know have braces, some on all their top and bottom teeth and they have no issues with being kissed and they dont make you speak that differently, no lisps on s's , Don't worry I'm sure it will be fine and will benefit you in the long run. :)
Hope this helps

hi.
just to let you now im 17 and i still have brace my teeth were over crowded but my next app will be to have them removed and i tell you what i can put simon cowells teeth to shame now :) mine are PERFECTION at last.
Of course u can kiss with a brace you use your lips and tounge to kiss not your teeth.
i would recomend you to have them now than later because as you said you dont really want to be walking around as an eighteen year old witha brace.
Hundereds of girls my age has them and now you can white braces (I have them) and you can hardly tell i have them.
most people have them a bout a year and a half to two years but ive had mine for 2 and a half cos i kept braking mine by eating sweets (i dont recomend) lol.
They dont hurt when they go on and off but they hurt for a day when you have them tightend its like an ache but it goes if you take paracetmol or if you hold something cool against your jaws.
Its well worth it and im a sucker for pain so if they hurt i so wouldnt have had them.
good luck lovlie x

Babes x is verified as being by the original poster of the questionthis is a reply to k_c100. (:
the dentist said my teeth are really nice as in they are clean and well looked after and he gave me the choice to see if I wanted to go to the orphadontist because he didn't think it was a major problem but when I went he told me that I my mouth was over crowded.
Also i only saw the speech therapist about a month or 2 ago and the problem will take about a year to sort and make my speech perfect as I've been talking like that all my life (15 years) so it'll be difficult to get out of the habit.
Thank you to everyone else, its made me feel alot better about getting them. x

Hello your problems seem relativly easy. I am 15 and have just had my braces off. I had a similar problem with a lisp but the brace actually didnt make much difference it takes about a week to get used to it then it feels like you have had it forever and gets easier. And dont worry braces are more and more common now and many children our age have them there is no need to worry good luck i hope this helps xx xx xx

Depending on the type of braces worn, yes, they can create speech lisps. This is only because the brace interferres with the tongue and teeth.
I think you will agree that after the prescribed amount of time of wearing the brace and they come off, that it will have been worth the time, discomfort of wearing the braces, for you will have perfect teeth and a great smile.
There are almost always some form of trade offs in life.
Your friends might make fun of you, only because it is new and they haven't experienced it themselves, and they might even imitate your lisp. It isn't a personal attack, and if you learn to laugh along, then the newness will wear off quick.

Well think of it this way, who will want a girl aged 21 with terrible teeth? You have plenty of time for boyfriends, so it is best to get your teeth sorted now so they look great in a couple of years time rather than leaving them to get worse!
I had a brace when I was 13, and I was told I would need it for 18 months-2 years. In the end, I only had to wear it for a year because my teeth reacted really well to it. I am so glad I had my brace put in because my teeth are nearly perfect now and teeth are very noticable so it is important to have nice ones!
I'm a little confused why the orphadontist would say you need a brace when the dentist said you have nice teeth - maybe you should look into getting a second opinion from another orphadontist? Normally your dentist will be the one to decide you need a brace and then will refer you on to the orphadontist. And another thing I'm confused about - you said you have seen a speech therapist who has helped you resolve your lisp, therefore if you have sorted it out now how could it get worse if you had braces? Surely you would just keep using the same techniques and it wont come back?
Braces are not such a big deal, I know they seem pretty bad but think about it, most of the time you have your mouth closed so no-one will see them! And braces are pretty discrete these days, you can get tiny rubber bands that go round the brace in white (or bright colours if you really wanted!) that make the brace less visible. The dentist will put these on when he is fitting the brace. Having a brace wont make you any less attractive, and you can kiss when you have them (I managed it anyway!). For the 1st few months you will notice them and they will be a pain (food stuck in them is not much fun!) but eventually you will get used to them and you wont even notice them anymore.
I hope this helps and good luck!
