You know what really annoys me? When people like you complain about other people's poor grammar when you yourself refuse to capitalize the beginning of your sentences or even bother to capitalize "I" and spell "do" as "doo". You really shouldn't throw stones if you live in a glass house.

ok so too the post.. .
agree - but i am rubbish at A) written English(cse grade 3) and know not of the things you talk about. B) i am dyslexic so swap words etc. round and C) type and think at different speeds and don't check properly. i have a wild guess at grammar and sometimes i am right.
but i also hate the following :
1) she said he said she said - why not tell me simply (ok not grammar but on a line of English use)
2) coz, cause - its because.
3) use of CAPITALS in a sentence - OR IN a series OF Words. - Americans use this technique a lot.
4) stupid questions...really hate stupid questions.
my view is so long as the gist of what you are saying is correct and your answer is right - then if its me with my heart in tatters asking for advice, i wouldn't care if you got a full stop in the wrong place....

It's so annoying when people don't put 'vowels' in their words! or they write with numbers instead of letters, so you get some sort of 'I tlk lyk3 dis coz im sum srt of sp4nn3r' jeeez, or those people who write a capital letter at the begining of every word! 'Like This And It Proper Gets On My Tits' I'm with ya! People should learn to write properly :) xxxx

reader, anonymous, writes (26 March 2009): I have to agree with the OP here, and I also think that those who have come down hard on her have apparently misunderstood her. She's not talking about the odd typo or the mistakes we make as we are hurridly typing our questions/answers and we're not thinking about dangling particles or what have you (I don't think so, anyway).
I think she's referring to those whose writing (not typing) is sooooo bad you don't have a clue what they're talking about. And yes, it matters. This is a written medium. In order to be understood, it should be written in a way for others to be able to read and comprehend what is being asked or answered. When a teenager is writing in their local slang and THEN using text-speak on top of it, who in the hell knows what they're saying? I find it particularly ironic to read that kind of thing from someone whose 13-15 is talking about she wants to have a baby when she can't even string a legible sentence together. All I ever wonder is, "What the hell kind of job are you going to get to support that baby when you can't even write well?"
Look, if the writer has a flag from a non-English speaking country and their grammer and spelling is bad, that's fine. I give it a pass, because its probably better than what I could do if I were writing in their language. But to see that kind of thing come from someone with a US or Great Britain flag, where English is the first language? And you can't even communicate well enough to make your point known? Ugh... And I've read a lot of message boards where I see the same thing over and over again and I, as an adult, do wonder what's happened to the state of education in our country(ies).
That's my $.02 on the subject.

Well, there's one thing I detest more than poor grammar and that is a total miscomprehension of what the poster is stating or asking and ends up being lectured and berated about something totally unrelated!
And yes, I think it DOES matter - very much! So there!

It is an informal site. Alot of people who come to this site have to be formal all day so I think some of them like to not be formal. Others just are so used to writing that way, it is not a chore. In any case, its a nice venting spot for people and to make it a grammar lesson would be not good. Yes, there are lots off boo's boo's on this site. lol..

I understand what you are trying to say here, as it does annoy me when people talk in text/slang language, yet there are reasons for it. English may not be a strong subject for some people, sometimes it is easier to just write without having to think too much about it, and it's not exactly a formal site, all you want is advice whether they have a few mistakes in their answers or not, it's obviously still understandable and it's causing no harm to anyone.
I'm one of them people who likes to do things correctly, especially when it comes to writing, yet I do make mistakes and I'm sure you have too, as you have done in your questions, your grammar maybe right but your punctuation sure isn't (:
Anyways, I just think that if people get what they've come on here for, then thats all that really matters.

Further I have tons of run on sentences because I am typing conversationally and not writing a term paper. I am perfectly capable of spelling and using proper grammar...but I am not concerned with it here...as I am in the need of speed.
By the way if you are going to criticize or be criticizing, you had best learn to spell it correctly!

It's because being clever and learning stuff at school is not kewl or down wit da kidz.
When you get older you will find other people who are just as keen to appear intelligent as you are.
But not everyone is bothered about that, they'd rather put themselves forward in a different light.
I used to look down on people who couldn't write properly, just as they probably looked down on me for how I dressed.
It's all about who you are trying to impress and how. You just have to accept that people are of different levels and care about different things.
Be who you are and let them be who they are. It makes it a lot easier to find people who are on your level as if they write like a 12 year old then you know they probably aren't going to be your kind of person on an intellectual level. That doesn't mean they won't be lovely and a good friend in other ways though.
Good Luck!! xx

come on beth! who cares about gramma? we have a limited space of words here so we use abbreviated words to ensure that our texts fits wel in a single message. i'm not a native english speaker myself but people understand me here. so if you get the message crystal clear then why bother about grammar?

I agree with texting being the reason. I work at a University and you wouldn't believe how some college students hand in their written assignments. It's disturbing. One can only hope that they are just being lazy and actually DO know how to write complete sentences.

This site is called 'dearcupid' its here to help people with problems revolving around such things as romance, love, and sex! It's not supposed to deal with grammar! I admire you for supporting you friend and mother, this is not a selfish act. It was my opinion that you were selfish for going on about grammar when people on here just want answers to their questions! I do apologise for calling you selfish and irritating, I'm sure you aren't like this at all. I want to correct my statement by saying that your original question has irritated me as there are people on here trying to get help, not examining grammar. I think that texting has had an impact on the way which people communicate however as long as a sentence can be understood then there is nothing wrong with it. We are here to help people, I got an A* in english language and literature but when I am reading replies to my questions I don't analyse grammar! Some people aren't as educated as much as others but they still have a right to give advise to
People in need! There may be people with dyslexia who want to help people! Nobody deserves to be critised for giving help, the tone of your question makes it seem critising! X

BethBabes is verified as being by the original poster of the question1) I understand that, and that is not what I am saying. I understand that there are people incapable of using grammar properly, and not at one point did I say that they should not recieve advice. I was simply stating something that I have noticed.
2) Yes, I am prone to not using grammar properly myself sometimes, and maybe when i wrote that, I should have used proper grammar so I was in more of a position to critisise, but I am very tired from a long day at school and I am very tired uusually anyway so I just sort of forget. Also about the 'doo thhings': my computer has a wireless keyboard that is running out of battery so it sometimes doubles up letters or misses them.
No need to be so harsh, you are getting me so wrong, I was simply just stating something that I have noticed!

I sometimes get annoyed with the poor use of grammar on this site too. But like kellyxxx said, this site is more about getting and giving advice than the proper use of language.
And I tend to make quite a few grammatical and spelling errors myself.
Just one question?
Is "cos" a proper word in the UK?
Whatever happened to saying "because"?

A
female
reader, anonymous, writes (26 March 2009): Well, kellyxxx, if you expect people to spend "hours of their day" to write responses, you can at least take the time to proofread your question, which is easy anyway because of spellcheck. It's exactly this kind of fear of intellectualism that's not doing America any favours, in my opinion. There's nothing wrong with having standards. I've read questions on here that were so poorly written and ambiguous, I thought, "why bother if this person doesn't care enough to hit the space bar? Or use punctuation?" The internet is a written medium. There are rules when using a shared written medium and if you don't follow them, then of course there'll be problems. I don't think the original poster is selfish or irritating, I think she has a point. And it's great that a girl of her age is complaining about this instead of how she's pregnant and just doesn't know what to do :/

Two things "BethBabes":1. This site is for everyone. Many people come to this site for advise and to give their help to those who really need it. This includes dyslexics and people from other countries who don't speak or write English as a first language. Haven't you stopped to consider them? Do you think we should ban these people from getting the help their seeking? And 2. If you want us to take your complaint about bad grammer seriously, then you could at least get the basic rules right yourself.- A sentence should always start with a capital letter.- "I", when referring to yourself, should also, always be a capital.- "comments?" is not a sentenceand... My favourite...- You get frustrated when people don't "doo thhings" properly???
