Please please help me! It's stupid but everyone said they shave their vagina, so I decided I had to try it. I look under other questions on this web and used the answers eg use a razor and the lips the hardest part .. So I've done it now, and I think I've done it wrong, it's all red, I have prickly bits and lots of specs of blood. I really want to do this and step up but I don't think I've done it right :'( please help. Xxx

SirenaBlusera agony auntTonight the part of Eyes will be played by me:

"Oh noooooo!!!! Not another pubic hair questions!!!"

Just kidding... Eyes (another aunt) always gave some really good advice... and I don't mind these questions... just a little inside joke, we miss Eyes.

To answer your question... ow... that hurt me. I think that hair is gross but I wouldn't shave it... imagine what a slip of the hand could do. Yikes... that's enough to deter me. Why don't you go to a salon and get it waxed off? It would feel weird to be naked in front of someone, but it would last a lot longer. I hear it hurts, though... but better than being cut with a razor.

A friend told me that he shaved that hair once, and didn't do it properly and wound up with a disgusting rash as a result. He told me that it itched like mad when it was growing back.

He said that he didn't know that you were supposed to trim it first.

I read about this once. A girl wrote into YM magazine, saying, "I hate my pubic hair, how can I get rid of it?"

According to the article, you're supposed to trim it, then soak in hot water, then shave carefully then use some sort of anti-itch ointment.

My friend didn't know to do that and he learned the hard way!! :S

Sounds like BabyMonkey has a good answer.

There's nothing wrong with natural, though. If you want to get rid of it, do it because you want to and not because everyone else is doing it or your boyfriend wants you to, it's your body.

A female reader, babymonkey422 United States +, writes (24 June 2010):

babymonkey422 agony auntWell it's hard to say if you did it the "right" way without some more details like did you shave with your hairs? As in the same direction they grow or against? If this was your first time shaving down there EVER then I wouldn't be worried about some razor burn and specs of blood. I remember when I first started shaving the skin would get really red and itchy and I would get little bumps, razor burn, but using Bikini Zone cream or gel right after the shower works WONDERS! It WILL burn a bit right when you put it on but goes away quickly and prevents bumps and redness :) Another trick is to shave when you're in the bath or at the end of your shower so the hairs have plenty of time to soak up some water making shaving easier. I also use a gel that's made especially for shaving that area called Anti-Bumps Shave Gel also by Bikini Zone.

The recommended way to shave is in the direction the hairs grow but you don't get a close so I don't do it, I just use the gel to shave and the gel afterwards so it's silky smooth. Last thing, make sure your shaving in short strokes and pull your skin taunt so you don't snag anything... ouch!

Hope this helps!

Its a shaving rash i get it all the time when i shave my bikini area your supposed to use a brand new razor and let the cream soak into your skin for about a minute then you should use a cream with aloe vera in it as it makes the rash go down, i forget to do it properly most times and always get razor burn but thats all it is

It's bad to shave your vagina. The pubic hair is there for protection and you shouldn't have shaved it but my advice is just leave it until your pubic hair is back and then never shave it again.

A female reader, forkandknife United States +, writes (23 June 2010):

No, you didnt shave incorrectly, unfortunately those are razor bumps. Because the pubic region is so sensitive, the hairs grow back the wrong way, it happens to everyone. Ways to ease this problem are to use a fresh razor, use a good shave cream/ gel ( let it soak in for a minute before you start to shave.) Pay attention to the direction that the hairs grow, and shave in that direction. You can minimize the razor burn by rinsing cold water on freshly shaved skin (to help close the pores). After you shave you can also apply a creme to minimize and treat razor burn. Bikini zone makes one. Also , before you shave again let the hairs grow in until all the bumps disappear because if you dont let them heal they wont go away. Hope this helped :)

Sincerely Yours agony auntDid you use shaving cream? It just sounds like razor burn, and like prehaps you've cut yourself a little.

Make sure to use shaving cream and use a SHARP blade, not an old, used up one. After you get out of the shower you might want to put some lotion on it to help the skin, just like you would (or should) after you shave your legs.

A female reader, LilPixie United Kingdom +, writes (23 June 2010):

LilPixie agony auntDon't worry. Sounds like a shaving rash to me. The blood are just bits where you will have cut yourself with the razor, again, don't worry. Thats all completely normal, especially as it's the first time you've done it.

Wait till everything has healed before shaving again. Next time you do take your time. You'll soon get the hang of it and the bleeding will get less.

However, shaving rash can sometimes be caused by using the wrong razor or shaving gel so if it doesn't get better after having done it a few times try using a different brand.

I used to use cheap single use razors which gave me terrible shaving rash and i used a cheap shaving gel as well. I now only use Gilette.

The two times I've shaved my pubes, my skin ended up being covered in red itching spots, too, so I've sticked to good old scissors to simply keep the hair short and trimmed. This is what I would suggest you to do instead of torturing yourself the way you did. I didn't mind my girlfriend having some hair in her genital area back when we were together and I suppose your partner(s) (if you have one/any) will not mind either.

A female reader, Caresha Germany +, writes (23 June 2010):

When it comes to shaving it is quite easy to get a reaction.

Do you usually shave your legs/armpits? You never have a reaction there? That is a first good start. The problem is that the skin is a lot more sensitive in that area.

If you shave carefully the way the hairs grow it will not get all that red but it might stay a bit scratchy. If you shave against the growth it will be scratchy less but might be more red and prickly. Get a after shaving lotion for the intimate zone, it helps with the prickly bit.

When you get blood you need to be a little bit more careful. Take some more time, do it slowly and really look at what you are doing!

What helped me was shaving with the growth, leaving it a bit scratchy and so doing it slowly over a couple of days. It was red and prickly for a couple of hours and then really smooth and good. It might feel scratchy again when the hair comes back.

My friend swears on waxing to not get prickly.

A reader, anonymous, writes (23 June 2010):

Did you wet the hairs first with shaving foam or water??! Or dd you just dry shave because that will give you a rash and probably make your hairs get ripped out and bleed. Next time you do it just make sure it's after a bath or get a wax because they last longer
