I would say that the estimation of virgins after high school that you found seems plausible. Of my circle of friends in high school, about 90% were still virgins at graduation. It seems based on your high school experiences/observations you would put the percentage at somewhat the opposite. Obviously, having different friends and shared experiences can make the numbers appear much higher or lower than they actually are.One note I had to add after reading a few of the posts:While it is interesting to see the results of answers to this question, I would not use the answers on this site as a representation of the entire population. The people responding are of a small, specific group drawn to the same kind of sites and postings. Just something to consider. And to answer the question, I am now 29 and have no immediate plans to lose my virginity.

I mean i gurantee if u had sex at 16 than again at 18 it would be totally different because of everything u have learned about sex n hopefully the special person u r doing it with

Blondy is verified as being by the original poster of the questionOh goodness, I really wasn't looking to get into an arguement here, I was just curious about this. But, to dear 19 year old annonymous, how dare you! If you really think that only the 'bad' kids have sex at 14 you are extremely close-minded and a judgemental prick in my eyes. People are going to have sex at all different ages, and actually 14 is a fairly common number. Aside from me, three other people said they were 14. My boyfriend was 14, as was his dad, and so was my cousin, and trust me, LOTS of others, and despite what you think, it does not make them bad people or give them a bad reputation.
You can look at these numbers however you want, but I don't see how you can look at it and say 14 isn't common when it pretty much is. So was 13, and 15, and 16. Those were the most frequent numbers here, they are the most common which is what I thought. Compare the people who answered 13-16 with any other block of four consecutive ages and 13-16 will usually have more. I am not trying to promote this and say "You're not cool unless you've lost it by the time you're 16", I am not saying that at all. I don't care what age you lose it at, I was just wanting some different answers, and again thanks to everyone who participated.

17 for me.
Not sure i really agree on your interpretation of the statistics. 14 is very young, whichever way you slice it.
Do bear in mind that there is a lot of peer pressure to 'lose it', so many young people tend to lie about their experience. ie, they say they've had sex when they haven't, in order to appear 'cool' (although most people later learn there's nothing particularly cool about losing your virginity young)

A
female
reader, anonymous, writes (20 May 2009): 14 isn't a common age. When I was 14, five years ago only the kids with the bad reputations had sex at that age! 15 everything changed I admit. The 'average' age is 16/17 but everyone diffrent.

"Blondy", when I sum your tallies I get 37 responses. I don't think it's valid to dismiss the reports after age 20 as "random and sporadic" - all told, they represent almost a third of the results! In fact, the distribution is probably a good approximation to the "log-normal" statistical model.
I notice that, when ALL responses are included in the analysis, half (18 individuals) reported their first intercourse prior to age 17, and half had their first sex on or after age 17. This is actually excellent agreement with most recent results from the CDC's "National Center for Health Statistics", which reports median age for first intercourse as 17.0 years for boys and 17.4 years for girls. ( See http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/about/major/nsfg/abclist_s.htm#sexualactivity .)

Blondy is verified as being by the original poster of the questionOK, after 35 answers, here's my official count:
12-one
13-five
14-four
15-four
16-four
17-two
18-three
19-three
20-one
21-one
22-one
23-two
25-one
26-one
29-one
32-one
33-one
37-one
So, there we have it, 13-16 were the most common with 13 having the most. Most of the ones past 20 were ramdom and sporadic. So if anyone cares there you go. Again, thanks to everyone who answered!

Also, don't assume that everyone is having sex. people often say they are so they won't seem behind everyone else. I'm a 37 year old virgin. In the past, I have had the chance to sleep with someone, but i knew it wasn't right. I don't think i'm too being picky. It's just that i don't want to share my self with someone i can't see myself with for years.

A lot of the "polls" and "surveys" that you see (including this one!) aren't accurate. They lack scientific controls, and seldom represent a true cross-section of people. Many of these are created by individuals or organizations that have a stake in the outcome - a product to sell, a political position to support, etc. And, it has been observed that teens in particular are inclined to claim sexual experiences that they haven't had. Whether this is a simple case of bragging, or attempting to conform to what they THINK everybody else is like, or some other reason isn't clear.
The longitudinal studies I recall reading about, and trust, put the median age for first intercourse around 17 - 19 years for people in the U.S. at the start of the 21st century. Girls tend to start a bit earlier than guys. That age had been trending downward for several decades, but may have leveled off or even started to increase a bit over the last few years. A significant factor in the trend has been the number of people having sex at very early ages - under 15, even as young as 10!
Recently, some surveys (even the unreliable ones) have asked follow-up questions about the age when people "should" start having sex. MANY people who started at early ages - even up to 16 or 17 - think they started too young and should have waited.
And by the way - my wife and I exchanged virginity (she took mine, and I got hers in return) when we were both 23.
