 I started shaving in my teens because I'm a very active, athletic person and, let's be honest, women do sweat down there. If there's hair and it gets sweaty, it stays wet, and then it starts to collect odors throughout the day, and because we all wear underwear the hair becomes a nice, insulated, moist, warm breeding ground for bacteria. I just don't want to deal with that. So no, there is no sexual compulsion for me to shave, I do it in the name of hygiene.

My girlfriend seldom shaves down there. She has shaved around 3 o 4 times in all our relationship. The problem with her not shaving, is that when I give her oral, hair gets into my mouth and nose, and it is very inconvenient for me to please her.
Shaving = easier oral.

reader, anonymous, writes (4 April 2011): I first starter shaving parts of at first so the hair wouldnt be seen when i was wearing a bikini or in the P.E changing rooms. This was when i was about 15. The girls at school were a bit judgemental.I started shaving it all when i was about 18. And it honestly was because all i was hearing from boys (in general) that it was disgusting if a girl didn't shave. So it was peer pressure that drove me to do it.I believe that boys think this because of porn. Like Cerberus said it probably wasnt the porn industry that started it but a lot of boys first glimse of sex is through porn so its something they grow to expect.Saying that i still shave now, just because its something im used to doing, and i think the whole 'thats gross' attitude is still in the back of my mind. However my boyfriend said he likes that i shave but wouldnt mind if i didnt.

reader, anonymous, writes (4 April 2011): Actually it didn't originate from the porn industry, the porn industry only followed suit after fashion trends dictated that lingerie and bathing suits looked better without bush. If you look at porn from the 70's and 80's you'll see they were pretty much all full hair.Besides the fact that Playboy has become an extremely popular clothing and accessories label for adolescent girls is far more significant and having a far greater cultural impact than bush shaving ever has.Oh and as for you point about it looking too childish, the same can be said for all other types of body hair removal on women. They naturally have underarm hair and naturally hairy legs, so the same thing applies really. Because after puberty women get hairy but most shave all of it off. Pubic hair hair removal is just another version of that.

Do people realize that in porn movies they shave those skinny 18 year old girls to make them look like children? That “bald pussy” seems to be really appealing to many guys. I personally can’t stand it, I prefer my women to resemble women and not children! A neatly trimmed vagina is just perfect. It’s quite clear that the shaved vagina trend has drifted over from the porn industry. So I’m wondering, all these women, particularly the younger girls, do they realize that this bald shaving symbolizes a very significant element of the porn industry? That it originated from porn and not the catwalk, Milan or some other place?

 I shave myself down there because its a matter of personal hygiene for me. As Chigirl said, its cleaner during the periods and also generally I feel better about myself when I'm tidy down there. Also, most of the time I dont bother keeping it completely hairless unless I'm with my boyfriend, and thats because it makes oral sex much better and I'm not worried about a mass of hair poking him in the face.

 We don't. Maybe all the women you were with did it because they thought you liked it? But in reality not all women shave, and even those who do shave only do so every once in a while to keep it tidy down there. It's easier to clean if there's not a big forest down there, especially when we have our periods and blood gets dried up and tangled in hairs. Most women in my experience just cut it short and keep it tidy, they don't always shave. And very few will shave and have it baby smooth every day of the year.

Why do women shave down there? The same reason they pluck their eyebrows, shave their legs, armpits etc. It's just become fashionable to do so and they think it looks nicer, plus they think guys care and lots do.
Girls younger than that are shaving down there. Besides most girls start shaving their legs and stuff at 14 too.
It's just the done thing.

I wouldn't think that all or almost all women do. Perhaps there is a bias towards it on dear cupid by nature of the site. Many women like to keep things tidy. There is no harm in personal grooming like this.
14 year olds may well want to keep things neat and tidy if they have school swimming, or gymnastics, for example. There are a lot of practical reasons why a woman might choose to shave or wax this sort of area.
Overall it should be personal prerogative. Surely you can understand why people might want to tidy things up for both aesthetic and also hygiene reasons?
