A female reader, anonymous, writes (5 October 2008):

Active ingredient THC.. can have the same effects, if not worse as Cigarette Smoking, as the marijuana is inhaled deeper into the lungs than tobacco, and held into the lungs for longer.. even smoking marijuana only once or twice a week, can result in serious lung implications, such as cancer, empheysema, and other respitory problems. Also long term use creates addiction to substance.

On the brain it distorts the thinking, which means that the person can develop serious impairments, memory loss, short term memory loss, Effects the Dopamine, sensor in the brain, which means in long term use. users can experience withdrawl, depression, lack of motivation. In some cases marijuana is thought to create schizophrenia, increases individuals to being more at risk to mental health problems, as it also restricts the oxygen levels that get carried through to the brain.

I have dated pot smokers (not anymore), and I have witnessed a severe change in their state of mind, from exceedingly happy, to un motivated and moody, they were long term smokers of this drug, and I wouldn't recommend it. I also have a family member who smoke marijuana and is now permanently impaired from this drug use, and has a permanent mood disorder.. it is not curable and has brain damage, and brain damage CANNOT BE CURED.

Hopeful Romantic agony auntWant to know why weed is not horrible? Because in the whole history of the world, it has NEVER killed anybody!

My suggestion to the writer is ... let your man smoke in the evenings after work, this is much better than taking a "downer" pill or drinking, etc. As long as it is after work & in the evenings, I would consider it okay (my opinion) but if it got out of hand and he started smoking it like a cigarette chain smoker, then you might get worried. (maybe mention to him that you don't mind, but you hope it never gets to be that much)

As for the cost of it, that is another factor, but as long as he isn't toke'n it up from sun up to sun down, he shouldn't have to go after it too often.

Just my opinion. :) Good luck!

A male reader, anonymous, writes (2 October 2008):

whoever posted 'you're also 10 times more likely to have a heart attack after smoking it' that is complete bull.

Cannabis can affect people differently, some people can smoke it day in day out and be fine, others it can make them paranoid and can show symptoms of schizophrenia.

I personally used to smoke cannabis pretty oftern, atleast every few days, but it made me paranoid and unmotovated so i stopped, on the other hand both of my brothers smoke it DAILY, literally smoke it from when they wake up and go to bed, and they dont seem badly affected by it, both have good jobs and thier own houses (although i wouldnt reccomend this amount of use to anybody)

Smoking cannabis is better for your body than smoking cigarettes (unless of course you smoke cannabis with tobacco), and its better for you than alcohol. Smoking cannabis daily from my personal experiences won't do you any favours, but smoking it say at the weekends for example is pretty harmless. Cannabis makes people (generally) relaxed and chilled out, as opposted to alcohol which will make people angry, violent, unreasonable etc.

To answer your question, your boyfriend just needs to limit the amount he smokes, smoking it when he wakes up everyday isnt the best of ideas, but if he just smokes a bit in the evenings then i wouldnt worry too much about it, the legality of cannabis is irrelivent because the reasons why it was first made illegal and reasons why it is still illegal isnt to do with health issues, because if it was, alcohol would be a class A substance, considering it kills more people per year than every other drug combined...times 1000.

Hopeful Romantic agony auntI would rather have a man smoke weed after work than drink alcohol after work. I think alcohol is much worse on someone's temper - the worst thing about weed is the fact that it is illegal in most states.

A male reader, darren1111 United Kingdom +, writes (2 October 2008):

darren1111 agony auntspeaking as a previous long term puff head and social drug taker (old skool raver, only for the headstrong) i started on puff then speed, coke, Es, crack. i have been there and done that. smoking puff can cause depression, anxiety, paranoia, and several unhealthy conditions, but at the time it feels like the best thing ever, it is a slippery slope that can lead to harder drugs, i have lost several friends and family through drug abuse. my best friends brother stabbed him during a psychotic episode caused by cannabis use, but i also have friends that have used it for years and nothing is wrong with them at all, but is it a risk you want to take. i myself cannot touch it anymore as it makes me feel suicidal i have no short term memory and suffer depression and did not gain the knowledge of how to interact properly with other people, all these things affect my life now and i wish i had never touched drugs but where i come from its a way of life. you have got to think about the future, maybe this is not the right relationship for you, the fallout from drug abuse could also affect you in the future

BigSis agony auntHey Troubled,

I agree with your saying, but I doubt if he'd listen to her, our young lady can ask him, she can try if she wants... but like she says, he likes to smoke it to help him chill out after work -perhaps that's exactly all it is.

If I told my son to keep it to just weekends, he'd be none too happy with me.

Sorry babe {Unknown lady} I'm going on about you as if you weren't 'here'. I guess the odd one wont hurt, as long as he doesn't smoke it as often as one would light up a ciggy and smoke 10, 15 or more a day.

Teenage-Rebel agony auntTaking any type/ class of drug is dangerous dispite how many times you take it. It doesn't matter how long or the dosage.

The only kinds of drugs that should be taken are ones that are prescribed by a doctor/ nurse.

At the right dosage,

Any type of drug is addictive, and too much of it is bad and it could kill.

Your boyfriend needs to stop. It will be damaging his health. Although he doesn't realise it.

A reader, anonymous, writes (2 October 2008):

I pretty much agree with what others have already said. My opinion is that it is best left for weekend use and then only in moderation. My wife and I used to split one on Saturday night many years ago. We did that for maybe only 2 years. We used it to highten sexual pleasure one night a week and could easily miss it at anytime. I think that using it every day can lead to a sort of addiction to the feelings it gives. I don't think there is any psysiological addiction, but perhaps a psychological one. I would try to get your boyfriend to try to cut back to like Friday and Saturday nights only or just Saturday night. Allowing it to become even a psychologocal addiction could possibly lead to trying more dangerous drugs.

A female reader, BigSis United Kingdom +, writes (2 October 2008):

BigSis agony auntHello Unknown-Lady,

A very good question there my darling, and you are right to be concerned for his health, what a nice girlfriend you are.

Well now, from what I've experienced with people I know, some of the most common symptoms are;

Mood swings, short temper, red eyes, tend to sleep in a lot too, as it over relaxes, and also hunger pangs, hence the saying, "I've got the munchies".

Oh yes........ not forgetting - always being skint!

It can become harmful, yes, if smoked over a long period of time, keep an eye as it could lead to him being tempted into trying something stronger. I'm not saying he will, and I'm not trying to frighten you, but just be aware of it.

I suppose it can also depend on how much they use each time they roll a joint. Some people only put a sprinkle and mix it in the tobacco when 'skinning' up, then there are others who like a little more, and some who end up putting more weed than tobacco itself.

Just you take care of you - and if you haven't already, try not to get into the habit.

A male reader, Yos Netherlands +, writes (2 October 2008):

Yos agony auntOccasional use is next to harmless imho.

However, there can be problems with it. If you smoke it a lot, then it can mess up your short term memory and ability to concentrate. Not fatal, but a good way to fail exams or upset your boss. It also can sap your motivation, meaning you just want to laze around and not do much. Both boring and un-constructive, but also a good way to end up depressed.

Some of the very strong weed (skunk-type) can be quite psychoactive. Meaning it could trigger problems for someone with psychotic tendencies (especially paranoia), or have negative effects on anxiety. But this is pretty unusual.

A male reader, Replacement Canada +, writes (2 October 2008):

Replacement agony auntIt's no more harmful than cigarette smoking but is best done in moderation- If you smoke for say, 5 hours a day, every day, for an extended period of time you'll see ill effects to memory and perhaps even lung cancer (though this is debated). I've been smoking weed since I was 14, I probably do it 2 or 3 times a month and have experienced no ill effects to my personal or professional life, and no ill effects on my health, because I take proper care of my body with regular exercise and a (relatively) good diet. As with anything, moderation is key. I have seen people go overboard, and lose track of other things.
