To the annonymous writer of the last post.

"You don't get addicted after 1 or even 100 cigarettes, like one of my friends smoked".

?????? Are you serious??? You may have been lucky enough to think it was revolting but think of the countless kids out there who bow to peer pressure and continue. The only bull I see on this post is yours. Grow up and look at the facts.

Tbh I think a lot of the advice on here is absolute BULL!

When I was 14/15 I smoked with my friends a little because you are experimenting being a teenager and getting used to being more grown up than a child. I smoked about 20 cigarettes in my whole life, I didn't get addicted. I hated it! But I wouldn't have known that until I tried it. I would be going through my life thinking " hmm I wonder what smoking is like".

Have a couple with your friends, and realise how disgusting it is then leave it when you have satisfied your curiosity.

I never touched one again after throwing up because they make you feel so sick. And guess what...none of my friends took up smoking either after our experimentation.

You don't get addicted after 1 or even 100 cigarettes, like one of my friends smoked.

Give it a go, then don't touch them again! (they are bloody expensive too!)

i do not understand why you would want to start smoking. once u start ull think that u are in control but then ull find urself addicted to it and regretting u ever even tried it.

it also affects your looks. its prematurely ages ur skin! when i started smoking at 19 by 20 i had developed wrinkles under my eyes!

the earlier u start the worse ur skin would be by the time ure 20 or 19. not only did it give me wrinkles but it changed the whole tone and colour of my face. i look really unhealthy, pale and much older than 23 now .

and as for my teeth.. ive always had nice white teeth. now my teeth are yellowish, my fingers are stained and i smell of tobacco all the time.

i regret having started smoking..

my lungs eve feel different now and i cough up a lot more.

so if u want to age ur skin and look uglier.. thn sure go and smoke a ciggie!

A female reader, AuntieSnap United Kingdom +, writes (10 October 2010):

Hi there,

Before you put that first cigarette to your mouth, here are a couple of facts. I have teenagers of my own and this is EXACTLY what I told them lest they ever be tempted by cigarettes.

Tobacco kills!! Simple! If you dont believe me go to any hospital with a cancer ward and see first hand the effects of tobacco. It is a horrible, painful and in some cases slow death. It is a very insidious cancer and by the time you feel ill and have it checked out it is probably at such an advanced stage that it is beyond treatment because it will have spread to other organs of the body. I have seen what it can do and how quickly - in the case of my friend Shirley - it can spread. She hadnt been feeling well for a week or so and went to the doctor who sent her for tests. She was dead within two weeks of the diagnosis and had been smoking throught her life. She started at 14 and had only smoked about 3=5 cigarettes a day, not enough to make a difference you might think but it did. My friend was 41. Her children were 13 and 16 and still miss her to this day. My brother's mother in law was not so lucky. Kate died in agony after months of chemotherapy. She was 63 and never got a chance to see her new grandson. Here are a few facts.

The tar that is produced by cigarettes is strong enough to cover roads. Not a pleasant thought.

One in two lifetime smokers will die from their habit. Half of these deaths will occur in middle age.

Tobacco smoke also contributes to a number of other cancers.

The mixture of nicotine and carbon monoxide in each cigarette you smoke temporarily increases your heart rate and blood pressure, straining your heart and blood vessels.

This can cause heart attacks and stroke. It slows your blood flow, cutting off oxygen to your feet and hands.

.Some smokers end up having their limbs

amputated.

Tar coats your lungs like soot in a chimney and causes cancer. A 20-a-day smoker breathes in up to a full cup (210 g) of tar in a year.

Changing to low-tar cigarettes does not help because smokers usually take deeper puffs and hold the smoke in for longer, dragging the tar deeper into their lungs.

Carbon monoxide robs your muscles, brain and body tissue of oxygen, making your whole body and especially your heart work harder. Over time, your airways swell up and let less air into your lungs.

Smoking causes disease and is a slow way to die. The strain of smoking effects on the body often causes years of suffering. Emphysema is an illness that slowly rots your lungs. People with emphysema often get bronchitis again and again, and suffer lung and heart failure.

Lung cancer from smoking is caused by the tar in tobacco smoke. Men who smoke are ten times more likely to die from lung cancer than non-smokers.

Heart disease and strokes are also more common among smokers than non-smokers.

Smoking causes fat deposits to narrow and block blood vessels which leads to heart attack.

Smoking causes around one in five deaths from heart disease.

In younger people, three out of four deaths from heart disease are due to smoking.

Cigarette smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of low birth weight, prematurity, spontaneous abortion, and perinatal mortality in humans, which has been referred to as the fetal tobacco syndrome.

Still want to try it? I am sure that both your Mum and Dad would say exactly that same thing to you. Smoking is not cool, and over here in the UK kids seem to be getting the message about just how unhealthy and dangerous it is. As a Mum I have to hammer home the dangers of this killer habit not just to my kids (who are both very anti smoking) but to others as well because if I didnt I wouldnt be doing my job. There are some very scary facts about smoking and I truly hope that the above will change your mind. Tell your friends about this, print off facts about tobacco, go and see your doctor and ask him/her about the effects and illnesses associated with tobacco, get your science teacher to organise a questions and answer seminar on the subject, anthing to try and dissuade young people from taking up the habit. I hope this will change your mind about smoking, your life is too precious to throw away.

Please let me know what you decide and good luck.

Jmtmj agony auntI tried my first cigarette when I was 22, figured I was an adult, knew the risks and could control myself.

Starts off just bumming cigarettes...

Then after a month or two you buy one packet cos you're sick of asking people for theirs...

Then your addicted.

I'm still smoking at 26.

Trust me. Don't. Cigarettes relax you a tiny bit, but for what they cost you in money and your own health- they should give you a frickin orgasm each time you have one.

They are NOT... WORTH... IT.

Please don't.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (10 October 2010):

why do you want to smoke? It's a stupid and dangerous habit. Do you know that decades ago cigarette companies used to lie to people in ads and say that they're "just what the doctor ordered" don't be pressured by the media into getting addicted and one day down the road getting cancer or heart disease. Cigarettes are addictive as hell. My husband has tried to quit them many many times, but he's still smoking. Nowadays we are not so naive that commercials could tell us cigarettes would be good for health. Now we know the opposite is true. if they weren't so addictive, there'd be practically zero people out there smoking, that's how bad they are. You have been warned!

A male reader, Koolade United States +, writes (10 October 2010):

Koolade agony auntFirst of all it is your choice whether you want to smoke or not. Second it depends on if your bf really likes you or not, it has to be enough for him to stay with you if you decide to. Third you won't get addicted if you try just one. Fourth if this girl you just met gives you any reason not to trust her then don't. Fifth you'll find out that smoking isn't the dream that you think it is. When you try it it's going to burn your throat and lungs all day until the morning, and thats only after two puffs. If you make the decision to try it you'll find out that it's not so good as you thought it would be. Trust me I've done tried it.

Aunty BimBim agony auntNO! No no no no no bloody NO!

It stinks, its addictive, its expensive, it damages your health.

I beleive its more addictive than alcohol.

I attempted giving up so many times, havent had a cigarette since 2002 and guess what, I still get the craving now and then.

Its a filthy, filthy habit that will make your hair stink, your clothes stink and your house stink.

You will run the risk of heart disease, cancer, chronic bronchitis and emphysemia. The effects of cigarette smoking can sometimes take 20 years to manifest.

Just dont do it okay!
