Hey, this isn't really a relationship problem but I know all the aunts have great advice. The thing is, next week I'm off do do work experience for the whole week during my half term, but I'm due on my period either Sunday/Monday. Like many girls I suffer seriously bad with pain, migranes and so on and just because of this I'm dreading going. Does anyone have anyone good remedies, painkillers they advise etc? I usually take both nurofen and paracetemols but even this doesn't help. Please anything will be helpful, also it's an hour and a half drive both there and back and I'm going with my next door neighbour so I'd rather not being rolling around in agony whilst with her.

I know the pill is the best option at this time but my mum won't let me until I'm sixteen in a couple of months as she's wanting me and my boyfriend to wait for sex, so the docs is not an option. So any tips/advice would be great, thanks x

Thankyou for all the advice, I'll be trying them all, I've tried that feminax but it doesn't seem to so much, the heat patches sounded like a good idea so i've got a couple in and the orgasm is helpful to know haha.

Anyways thanks again and I'll keep my fingers crossed the pain isn't as severe tomorrow morning (:

2 ibuprofen (not on empty stomach) and 2 paracetamol (they can be taken together because they act on different systems) making sure not to exceeed max dose, and a hot water bottle on sore aread, the brain can only process one sensation/pain at a time and will go with the overriding one, ie if you had a headache then broke your arm your brain woudl 'forget' the headache and you would only feel the pain from the arm...so a nice hot water bottle masks the pain of cramps to the brain as well as soothing!

_lola_ agony auntHey

I find solpadene is the best for period pain, also what's great is hot drinks, tea/coffe anything like that but also if you take a tablespoon of whisky or brandy in a glass of warm milk. Tastes disgusting but it does the trick by warming up your belly!

Ask your mam about the whisky first though!!

Good luck on work experience xxx

Tisha-1 agony auntGood advice for you so far. My advice is to get out ahead of the pain. Start your painkiller at least 24 hours before you expect your period. Take the recommended dose. Exercise vigorously if you are physically able to do so. Take very little caffeine if you are a coffee or tea drinker, just cut back, don't cut it out. Orgasms actually do help, that's true! Stay very busy and try to distract yourself.

Ask to see the doctor if your symptoms are so severe. There's no point in suffering needlessly, and you aren't necessarily going to be put on birth control pills. Though why your mother thinks you being in pain is better than the low risk you'll become lured into underage sex due to being on the pill is a mystery to me. Tell her it hurts. A lot. And that you shouldn't have to suffer because she's got the wrong idea about you and your boyfriend.

Good luck! Remember, stay out ahead of the pain. Painkillers BEFORE you get your period, otherwise you're playing catch up.

A female reader, old-spinstah United Kingdom +, writes (22 October 2009):

I would speak to your doctor anyway. If you are sensible and understand the risks and implications of going on the pill (and possibly having sexual intercourse) you do NOT need your mother's permission, even though you are under 16. Obviously it's best to be honest with your mum but it is up to your GP to decide if the pill is the best treatment for your period pains. Even if he doesn't put you on the pill he may be able to prescribe a painkiller slightly stronger than the ones you are taking now.

If you don't want to go to the doctor, have a word with the pharmacist in your local chemist. There are some medicines which contain paracetamol and a small amount of codeine (a much stronger painkiller than either paracetamol or ibuprofen). Since you are under 16, you must talk to the pharmacist because you may have to take a different dose than it states in the instructions. Brand names of medicines containing paracetamol and codeine are Feminax, Solpadol and Syndol. (Ask the pharmacist which one might suit you best.) I find them very effective.

Because codeine is a much stronger drug than paracetamol or brufen there are more side-effects associated with it (although not everyone gets them) - constipation, feeling dizzy and light-headed and you should never mix this medicine with alcohol. Codeine is also mildly addictive so only take them when you are really in pain, not just mild discomfort. I personally have never experienced any of these side-effects.

I also think that there's nothing like a hot water bottle for period pain so take one with you! There are also special heat pads you can buy from a chemist or large supermarket which you can stick to your stomach and wear under your clothes. They look a bit like a large plasters. I haven't tried one of these though - I prefer the hot water bottle, even though I might look a bit of a lemon walking around with it!

Hope this helps

Advil is the best. I know because I suffer from severe pains. I literally throw up and go into seizures from the pain if I don't take a painkiller and nothing else works for me. It's good for migraines too. Usually takes 2 though or maximum strength and make sure you take it every 4 or six hours..whatever the package says. You can also try taking a hot water bottle with you. It helps calm the cramping. Chamomile tea is good too.

Miss_Oz agony auntFeminax ultra is a brilliant painkiller, its powerful and pretty fast-acting. It costs just under 5 pounds from the chemist. You can't take 2 at a time like normal painkillers as they're stronger, so make sure you read the instructions fully. Heat usually helps too, so a hot water bottle on the tummy can bring some relief. You might not feel up to it but exercise can be a big help too, even just a brisk, short walk. A lower back rub can also be very soothing if your boyfriend is feeling generous. :) I hope one of those helps you.
