This may be the strangest question in terms of love, but I really would like help! I've gone to my parents, to the counselor, and even my neighbor. They don't believe me! Okay, so let me set the scene; I'm 15, as it should already say on the post. I've been keeping this to myself for a year now; my family and I took a trip to Germany in 2009, an we saw places around where World War II was fought. we learned about the terrible things that went on, and also that there were boy-soldiers of only 12-15 years old in some years.

During the trip, I began to have dreams of one particular young soldier. The dream of him would come back every single night, and he would speak German to me. I could never understand. Many times the dream took place in black and white on a battle field, or an old city. Even when I returned home I had the dreams, and began to feel unnaturally cold at night.

There was a week where I heard German whispers in my room in the dead silence. Am I hallucinating? The reason this applies to this site is... I think I'm falling in love with the boy.

It may seem crazy, even I think so, but I see him every night. It's like i'm unattracted to boys in my life, because I feel oddly attached to this figure. Recently I saw his shape in my room. Is this a ghost trying to talk to me? Am I seeing things? What's going on!

AllRiledUp010 agony auntThank you soo much everyone! I did go to a medium (or at least I think it was a medium), and they said it was most likely my active imagination. I do live in an older house, and I had them come with some paranormal investigators from a local area..my house is haunted, but not by the boy. Thank goodness! I'm glad I'm not going insane feeling cold and nauscious at night. Thank you again for everything!

A reader, anonymous, writes (19 February 2011):

I don't know if I'd call it hallucinating as that's defined as perception in the absence of a stimulus, nor would I go as far as to say its a real spirit trying to contact you... I think its something that you've unconsciously constructed and the more you think about this "boy", the more he's in your mind, the more he seeps into your dreams... and that's before you even realized that you were oddly attracted to the idea of him (which would only amplify the whole cycle).

Now I don't believe in ghosts, not because I'm closed minded, but because I've personally seen nothing that suggests otherwise. One of the things that suggests to me that this is largely a construction of your mind and not the work of a spirit/hallucination is that you had PLENTY of stimulus to form this "boy" from. You went to germany, were immersed in the country, its terrible history, probably shown films, photographs, statues, graves, told stories of heroism and maybe that really touched you.

Another reason I think that this isn't a spirit is that sometimes you've been dreaming in black and white. Now I can't say that I've ever dreamed in black and white, but then again I don't watch black and white movies... I find them boring. I'd expect but can only assume that some older people who grew up watching black and white movies/TV might dream in B&W more often. In saying that you sometimes dream in B&W suggests that your stimulus, or initial perception of this "boy" was in black and white.

There is no reason why a spirit appear in B&W... the world has always been as colorful and "hi-def" as we see it today... its merely that what we see from the past was limited by the photography/video technology of the time. I see no reason why a spirit would "appear" in black & white and not color as B&W is just how WE often perceive the past, not as the past actually was.

You've dreamed both in color and black & white so that really suggests to me that this "boy" is partly constructed from B&W stimulus and partly from your own fascination/attraction to the idea of him and what you think he was like. The fact that you're not attracted to other boys could be a "cause" of this "boy" or it could be an "effect". What I mean is that he could be making you find boys unattractive in comparison, (how could teenage boys measure up to an idealized, mysterious and romanticized character?).

You could be almost fantasizing about the idea of him BECAUSE you've so far always found teenage boys to be lacking what you might want/look for in a man. Lets face it, you're at an impressionable age... Just look at the issue of teenage girl crushes on male teachers, its similar in some ways... For example, often girls find the boys their own age to be too immature (among other reasons) and find its easier/more enjoyable to be infatuated with the fantasy of a future with a strong, mature male figure (ie. teacher) than the guys who still find farts hilarious.

Sometimes they seem to be in love with the fantasy as opposed to in love with who their teacher is as a person. Sometimes they are so infatuated, perhaps even in love with him that they begin to create a "mould" of what they want in a future guy, so that even years down the track they may be looking for the same things in a partner that this idealistic scaffold imparted on them... Ok, I'm getting off topic, but the point is you're at an impressionable age where you're slowly but surely deducing from the males around you what qualities you want in a partner, whether you build this construct from an idea, a fantasy or a real person really doesn't make much difference to the mind.

I would totally love to believe in ghosts, hell, if one visited me tonight my perception of the world would just be blown away- (as yours seems to be). I also don't like raining on peoples parades when it comes to what they believe in, but in this case, something which I believe to be fantasy is affecting your reality. Its your life and if you want to indulge in this *possible* fantasy then that's totally up to you, whatever makes you happy. But I couldn't not give you my opinion to at least consider the possibility that this is largely in your head given that its affecting your reality.

The mind is a fascinating and mysterious thing, so don't by any means think that I'm suggesting that you're crazy or mentally ill. This is probably just one of those quirky things that's been built up over time and reinforced constantly to the point where the lines between fantasy and reality become blurred.

I occassionally lucid dream in which I'll realize instantly that I'm in a dream before I've actually started to dream of anything at all. It's literally like that scene in "the matrix" movie where Neo and Trinity are about to try to rescue Morpheus. They're completely surrounded by white nothingness and then Neo says "we'll need guns, lots of guns", then endless racks of guns whoosh into their reality.

When I lucid dream (which is part of hypnagogia as "nononsense" posted earlier), its basically the same as that matrix scene (except that the background is black, not white). I'll be in complete blackness, aware that I'm in a dream and I'll consciously think what I want to do... usually I'll make a wall and walk through it, then I'll fly, then once I choose what I want to dream about it kinda just leads on from there, sometimes I'll then get swept up in the fantasy and forget that I'm dreaming, other times I'll be in almost complete control of what happens in the dream.

Now I thought that was a normal part of dreaming for everybody until I was with a group of mates drinking... Needless to say, when the topic of dreams came up and I said something like "don't you love it when you know you're dreaming and you choose what superpowers you have for the rest of the dream..." I got nothing but strange silent stares, followed by hysterical laughter and condescending questioning. Slightly embarrassing, but funny looking back on it. Point is, unless you've had a lucid dream before, it sounds like complete and utter craziness... not only that, but its impossible to prove to anybody.

I imagine the same goes for people who believe in ghosts or UFO's... even if they are real and you did genuinely see one... who would believe you without proof? Proof which often can't be proven without somebody seeing it themselves... but then what... you'll just have two people who can't prove something and seem "whacko" to everybody else instead of just one. Interesting thought.

So yeh... got a bit off topic, ranted a lot, forgot my point and then wrote too much to NOT post this. Take from my ramblings what you will.

P.S. I'm not crazy... I just decided not to proof read :P

I don't believe in ghosts so I will essay a more sceptical explanation.

Maybe you heard something during your trip, or in a film about this subject. Something that you saw or heard in the past and you can remember consciously. But it was held inside your subconscious memory and (as always happen with the unconscious mind) it shows up in your dreams.

I would recommend to get therapy in order to find where into your unconscious mind is this memory and what does it mean. If you are able to hear this when you're awake, I would tell this is going into the psychiatric field and you may need medication too.

Finally, believe in a ghost or not, there is no point in falling in love with something that doesn't exists so, start dating real people.

If you truly believe it may be a ghost or spirit, why not try going to see a medium? I myself am sceptical about most mediums but it couldn't hurt.

Everyone is right. You are seeing things, you are hallucinating. Accept this a hallucination. A form of Hypnagogia. Read about it here.
