I've turned down dozens of sexual offers over the years. Maybe I turn it down more than average but most guys do at least some picking and choosing.

I wouldn't have sex with any female who offered, but I guess that is because I'm gay :)

A male reader, anonymous, writes (21 July 2009):

I have to be married to the person before I can sleep with them. But that's mostly because I'm religious and know the consequences of sleeping with someone outside of marriage. If my ideal girl came in front of me naked and asked to have sex I would still not say yes. If I was being forced to have sex with the same person I would still resist. So the answer would be no, there has to be a relationship first.

Reading the answer that LazyGuy gave, I guess the better question would have been:

Would a guy have sex with any woman who he was sexually attracted to if either

A) he was single

B) his partner permitted it

C) he could get away with it

and he was sure that he would not contract an STI or get her pregnant?

Answer: HELL YES!!!!!!

A male reader, LazyGuy Netherlands +, writes (20 July 2009):

LazyGuy agony auntNo. Of course not. Unless she is really pretty. Or I can get away with it.

We are men, DAMMIT!

And considering the fact that over 30% of children are not of the father who thinks he is the father, a lot of women are men too.

As a 39 year old I'd have to say it's not true but the younger guys may be more likely to take it if it's offered.

A reader, anonymous, writes (20 July 2009):

I turned down sex with a drunken Finnish sales rep once. She was very pretty, we were in a hotel bar, I was single, and I was quite looking forward to it. Then my best friend's girlfriend turned up, took one look at her and said to me, "surely you could do better than that".

Twenty-five years later and I still regret doing the sensible thing. I mean, how many times in your life do you get a chance to sleep with a drunken Finnish sales rep?

A reader, anonymous, writes (20 July 2009):

It is not true, at least not for me. After my divorce from my first wife I had a woman try to pick me up at a bar on 2 occasions and I just found an excuse to end the conversation. I was not interested in either one of them, although I might have been interested in someone else those nights. Neither one of them were fat or ugly. They just didn't appeal to me.

I also had 2 women who I knew ask me for a date around the same time. I had a girlfriend and had to turn them both down, as they both knew my girlfriend. I would have dated the one if my girlfriend had not worked at the same place, as she encouraged me to date other women. She was the first woman who I dated after my divorce. (No wonder I married her.)

I am in my mid 60s now and I would guess that I would find that less than 10% of the women between the ages of 45 and 65 who I see while out shopping as appealing to me. Those are the ones who I would be willing to have a sexual encounter with even if I were not attached. Considering the wife I have now, I would say that only about 5% of the women who I see near my age as sexually appealing to me.

A male reader, baddogbj China +, writes (20 July 2009):

baddogbj agony auntThe easy answer is "No, not ANY woman". But if you were to ask "Would a majority of men with a functional sex drive, take the opportunity of sex with a woman who is physically highly attractive so long as they feel there is very little possibility of being caught?" Then the answer is yes. There is a cliche that man doesn't need a motive to cheat only a sufficiently good opportunity. Everything comes down to risk and reward. The rewards are fairly obvious so it is a question of how low the apparent risks can be made.

There are some very good men out there but if we discount those who have very low sex drives I would say that it is probably no more than 20% that would would not cheat under any circumstances no matter how attractive the opportunity and how apparently risk free the encounter.

A male reader, Beingblack United Kingdom +, writes (20 July 2009):

Beingblack agony auntThis is not true. I have turned down sex with lots of sober women, drunk women, married women, and single women. When I was younger I didn't but for the last 17 years, I have been faithful.

I will admit to wondering what might have happened with quite a few of them though.

Yes, I masturbate.

No, I don't have a flying unicorn.

Many men feel the same way that I do. Not ALL of us think with our penises.

A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (20 July 2009):

Tisha-1 agony auntMy husband said that's simply not true. Not every man will sleep with whatever woman throws herself at him. I expect you've found an unreliable man; do not fall prey to the idea that ALL men are like that. They are not.

Be careful not to paint all of humanity or one half of it, anyway, with the same brush. If all the men you meet are

"horn-dogs", then look to yourself, where are you meeting them and why are you attracted to them?

A male reader, Rogerramjet Canada +, writes (20 July 2009):

Eh, basically i think what it comes down to is how in control of his natural biological urges a guy is.

I think, from a natural perspective, a man is just biologically compelled to mate with as many women as possible.

Some guys have the self-control (or possibly a good reason, like a woman they really truly care about?) to put off any come-ons, while others just don't.

A reader, anonymous, writes (20 July 2009):

even though I am not a male I just have to say.. that women do plenty of sleeping around too. As for my man... if he had the opportunity to sleep with a super hot hottie.. would he? Maybe... but then again if brad pitt comes knockin on my door... would I? Maybe. My point is different people do different things and have different standards. Not all men are horn dogs.

A male reader, Jason32477 United States +, writes (20 July 2009):

Jason32477 agony aunt No this is not true.I have turned down sex on more then one occasion. Even while being single because I didn`t want a relationship with them. I`m not going to say I`ve never cheated on any of my girlfriends because I have. But I can say I`ve never kept it a secret. And every time I have cheated I was in a relationship that I didn`t really want to be in. I know of multiple girls I can get sex from at this moment, but I am faithful to my girl. At some point you realise that sex is meaningless without the emotional bonds of love.

And the table swings both ways.I have been cheated on more than I`ve cheated upon.

I know you asked for male replies but I was asking the same thing to a male friend of mine a couple of weeks ago.

He told me that although there are guys like that, he doesn't know any and he certainly wouldn't do it himself. I think women tend to believe that men are up for sex whenever, with whoever but I don't think this is the case. x

A reader, anonymous, writes (20 July 2009):

Some will, some won't. I've turned down girls for being too drunk or unappealing or because I already had a girlfriend. I don't think that makes me too exceptional.
