Plexi agony auntSome women to have lumpy breasts naturally. It is especially common and normal to find lumps around the time of your period. If they are tender it usually means they are normal. Do you have any skin puckering, discharge from the nipple or lumps under your armpit as well? Is there any history or breast cancer in your family? Having said all that, you should go and see a doctor to really rule things out because my friend's little sister had breast cancer and died when she was only 19 and the doctors said thatr based on the size of her tumour, it looked like she had it for years.....

God luck to you hun!

A female reader, TasteofIndia United States +, writes (10 January 2011):

TasteofIndia agony auntI discovered a bump around 15. I will tell you now that the worst part of this will be telling your Mom that you have a lump and need to see the doctor. For me it was a benign cyst that they still felt that they should remove. It really wasn't a big deal.

You don't have to be super worried, but you do need to get in to see a doctor asap. Don't waste time! It may be a little embarrassing to talk about, but you will get peace of mind if you just have a professional check it out. Good luck, sweet!

I'm a man. But amazingly, we suffer from lumps and bumps in our chest too. At your age, given that you're growing, it's most likely to be something natural.

HOWEVER! I am not a doctor. Any lump that you find in your breast is something that needs to be checked out. I'm sure it's probably nothing, but you really need to be sure. So I'd recommend visiting the doctor and getting the lump checked out.

A reader, anonymous, writes (10 January 2011):

Ok, at first you have to check if it is present in both breasts. Then try to feel whether the size and shape is same in both. If it is present in both sides and is of same size and shape, then it is nothing to worry about. At puberty female breast undergo some changes and during the process milk producing structures develop. . . I think you are feeling your lobules (that after pregnancy will secrete milk). . . But if the mass is present in only one breast then please tell your mother and consult a doctor as soon as you can. . .

Hi there,

When i first started my period when i was 14, i noticed a bump inside my breast. It would come and go and realised it would come back when im on my period and 11 years down the line it has disappeared on its own.

Dont feel scared about this discovery. Go and visit your GP and they will help you out, such as having tests done and all.

Until then check regulary if the size and shape of the bump changes and if it is painful to touch.

Other than that pay your GP a visit ASAP.

A male reader, als77 Norway +, writes (10 January 2011):

Have you visited a self-exam-site? There were recently a program on TV in Norway about breast-cancer and the conclusion about self-exam were: 1) there are bumps in ALL breasts (this does NOT necessary mean that you have cancer), 2) to avoid detecting "wrong" bumps you should check with a flat hand and NOT your fingers (apparently you will always find a bump if you check with the fingers), and 3) what you should get worried about is if you find a bump that become different.

Try checking out a self-exam-site to get advice on how to self-exam yourself.

It probably is a small cyst, very normal. You just need to see a doctor to get it sorted if if doesn't go in a few days.

A female reader, Luv_doc United Kingdom +, writes (10 January 2011):

Hiya,

I would recommend that you go to see a doctor immediately just to be on the safe side. I know it's embarrassing... When I was 13 I had mastitis which is inflammation of the breast tissue, I had a large painful lump in my right breast which was inflamed. Luckiy antibiotics cleared it up but I really didn't want to go to the doctor. With serious problems such as breast cancer it is best to seek professional advice.

Good luck
