I am 16 years old. The man that I am in love with is 27. I live in the state of Maine and it said I could be/do anything with anyone over the age of 21 with parental consent. But he is still concerend that he can end up in jail. Can he still go to jail even if my parents consent to it?

salvadda agony auntHe should end up in jail. There is something wrong with a man if at the age of 27 he wants to be with 16yr. old. If you have good parents they will see right thro this man. You say you love this man, think of the age difference. He will be so much older than you and you will still be young. Your interest in him will fade with age. Think of what you have in common now? See how much he loves you if you ask him to wait till you come of age, that will prove his love for you. It will tell you if he loves you from the heart or from the inside of his pants.

A female reader, pixeydust United States +, writes (29 April 2008):

pixeydust agony auntI was 16 when I got pregnant. I live in OK. My parents signed the papers so that the two of us could get married (he was 19, so I was still a minor) he didn't get into trouble for it. They consented to the marriage. As long as they don't press charges he won't get into trouble....at least that is the law here, unless it has changed since in the last 14 years. They had to consent to the 2 of us getting married though. In a way I wish they hadn't though, I have to great kids from it, but he was abusive and he was a cheater and he also wanted me to have sex with him every night before we went to sleep (or he wouldn't let me go to sleep, and I have to have my sleep because I have seizures so I always gave in) we have 2 kids, and I was afraid he'd take them away, I was afraid of him since he was abusive and he always said no one would ever love me again. I have the 2 kids and I have someone that loves me, but that isn't the point. The point is, when you're that age when you are that young you are usually pretty absentminded and don't really pay attention to what is really going on around you. You think that you know what love is and you are blindsided. Older men are always willing to take advantage of a teenage girl because they know they can usually get whatever they want, they aren't going to go run telling mom and dad what they did cause they aren't supposed to be doing anything at that age...or shouldn't, they need to be doing school work and concentrating on school and boys, not men. The best advice I can give to you is forget about the relationship between you and this man, most likely he is out to take advantage of you, more often than not this is the only thing a guy this age wants with a teenage girl. End this relationship and find one with someone your own age. When you get older and wiser about love and relationships, if you don't find someone your own age and want to go out with someone older, do it then. Take advantage of your childhood while you can....I didn't and I regret it.

A male reader, Namatjira United Kingdom +, writes (14 April 2008):

According to the Maine statutes it is not an offence provided you are 16 unless he is your teacher in which case you must be 18.

Do a search on Google for the phrase "age of consent in maine" and you will find plenty of references to assist. Pay more attention to those that actually quote the criminal code rather than just voice opinions.

On the other hand, I think that you are very young to be forming a lasting relationship regardless of his age and would suggest that you give yourself some time to mature more before you commit to anything.

Good luck

A female reader, velvetluv21 United States +, writes (11 April 2008):

Not only can he end up in jail but he will forever be listed as a sex offender and forced to register wherever he lives. You don't know how your parents will react if god forbid anything bad happens between you guys. Also, anyone can report him. It doesn't have to be your parents. Since it is illegal and it is reported, the state prosecutes even if your parent give consent. He can and most likey will end up in jail. This kind of stuff ruins people's lives. One of the news programs had this on a few months ago. The sad thing is that even if you keep it quiet for a few years until you are 18, if someone has proof you guys slept together before then he can still be arrested up to 7 years after the sex happened. I know you guys may love each other but he's walking on very thin ice to be with you.
