Overall i would consider it to be a bad idea. Age gaps aren't a big deal at all but 30 years is pushing it for any type of relationship.

The answer is in your own question really - sex.
I suspect it would be great for his ego to have sex with a younger girl who he thought he could control. I've nothing against age gaps, and sometimes they can work out (I'm seeing an older woman, for example).
But your post suggests that basically this 48 year old guy is just after a quick thrill and little else.
