What are the odds of my girlfriend being pregnant?

A male United States age 41-50, anonymous writes:

So here is my dilema. My girlfriend and I had sex last night and I came inside her. One hour after, she started her period. What's the odds of her getting pregnant? We have sex on a very consistant basis atleast once a day no more than 5 times a day lol. I was told the more often you have sex the lower your sperm count. Also, I figured since she started her period then that's a done deal. Honestly I don't mind having a kid, I would love nothing more but we are not trying to have one. So can I get some feedback, is it a 50/50 chance, slim to nothing or high probablity?

A male reader, Dr. John United States +, writes (13 July 2008):

Dr. John agony auntFirst of all, you need to know a little bit about the menstrual cycle. I'm sure you know that a woman gets her period once a month. About two weeks after her period starts, the woman ovulates--that means she releases an egg. The egg then travels down the fallopian tubes towards the uterus. If it doesn't run into any sperm along the way and get fertilized, the egg leaves the woman's body and she has her next period as usual.

A woman is fertile--meaning she can get pregnant--while an egg is in the fallopian tube. The sperm can live inside a woman for up to 5 to 7 days, so it's possible to get pregnant when you have sex even several days before you ovulate because the sperm will be there already waiting for the egg. Likewise, the egg will survive (unfertilized) 24-48 hours after ovulation, so you can easily get pregnant during that time.

This means women are most likely to get pregnant for the two weeks in the middle of their cycle. In other words, one week after their last period started until one week before their next is the most likely time.

However, women's cycle's can be different! This is the "textbook" version of how MOST women's bodies work, not everyone's. Even though ovulation normally happens in the middle of the month, a woman can ovulate at any time. Many things make our cycles change, including changes in diet, changes in the environment and stress.

Yes, it is possible to become pregnant during your period but it's very unlikely. Most women do not ovulate during their period. However, let me stress again, eggs may live for 2 days and sperm may live for 5-7 days inside a woman's body. They could finally meet up during menstruation, but it's rare.

So it's never "safe" to have sex unless you do it with a condom if you don't plan on starting a family.

Tigger3165 agony auntGetting pregnant isn't as easy as people make it seem (take it from someone who has been trying)... and with the surrounding circumstances, its very very slim chance... but that doesn't mean there's no chance...

A female reader, anonymous, writes (13 July 2008):

the chances are slim, but if you are having sex at least once a day (up to 5 times) there is a high risk of getting pregnant, especially if you don't use any birth control

Firstly if you want to have a child; I suggest you and your partner discuss it and if you are both in agreement on this, then you plan it;

HOWEVER

the chances that she might be pregnant from what you have described is very limited;

BUT

given the age that you have indicated and if you are prepared to be a "dad"; I surely would think you have all the info regarding the risks of pregnancy.

Perioda or not; she can still use the morning after pill; as long as she uses it within 72 hours after the unprotected sex; just as extra precaution;

Anyway, I am not here to judge you, merely to try and help;

If you are ready to be a DAD, it is a great experience; but a great responsibility; PLAN it and vow, go for it.

Best wishes and lots of SMILES.

A male reader, jumboshrimp Norway +, writes (13 July 2008):

the chance is slim to none. its highly unlikely that a woman can get pregnant during her period. she would have to have a double ovulation or if she had an "implantation bleeding". this can happen around the time when her period is due, and she may mistake that bleeding for a period.

i usually cum inside my wife when she is on her period and it has been "successfull" for 2 years now. she is not on any contraceptives and i dont use a comdom. we do it this way because we can afford an accident, so to speak :)

A reader, anonymous, writes (13 July 2008):

I would say probably slim to none, but contrary to popular belief, women CAN still get pregnant on or around their period. It is also true that the more you have sex and/or masturbate, the lower your sperm count is. But it is still in the millions, and all it takes is one little swimmer to knock somebody up! So if you don't want to have to worry about it, use protection always (but even that's not foolproof).
