What am I a Democrat or a Republican and what is the diffrence anyways? I always thought Republicans for rich people and Democratic for the working class. But people tell me i'm wrong. Some say i'm conservitive and some say I'm liberal. When people ask me my views I tell them , I'm religous a Catholic I am aginst abortion and death penalty. I am not prejudice aginst gay people I have friends who are gay but think a marriage should only be between a man and women. I don't agree with stem cell research if it has a fetus involved. I want our troops home and out of Iraq. I think working class and poor people should get more tax breaks and the rich pay more. I care about the planet. I want health care for all and collage for all. I'm for immmigration and think immigrants are the backbone of this country. The should be givin a break and the media loves to show only bad things about them. We are all immigrants unless you are Native American. They don't bother anybody and only take jobs nobody wants. I can't stand racist or sexist people. Or people that think cause they have a little money they are better than others. Well that about sums up my views. So can anyone tell me what I am. Democrat or Repulican I'm confused? I know that some people will disagree with my views and they have a right to there own views I'm just wondering what they would consider me?

LazyGuy agony auntAs a european, the choice between democrat and republican is the choice between extreme right and extremist right.

Even right wing parties in holland consider the americans extreme right.

You got to remember that the US has a very odd two party system, without any real difference between them they tend to put forward candidates that appeal to the largest group and that group is in the middle.

Basically, the race is to determine which candidate can pick up enough voters from the center group without loosing their own backers to some 3rd party who doesn't have a chance of winning but could give the other side the win.

LEFT---Democrat candidate---Floating voters---Republican candidate---RIGHT

The republican candidate needs to pull in the floaters who think abortion should be allowed without alienating his hardcore backers.

The democrat candidates has to pull in the floaters who think that guns should be allowed without alientating his own hardcore backers.

You own views show exactly this problem, that most voters are neither left nor right wing. Ideally, goverment should be run by referendum, it allowed californa to elect a right-wing loney yet at the same time allow medical use of marijuana. Rather then vote for a candidate that has to represent all your ideas you vote on the actual issues themselves.

Of course, the parties HATE this idea.

The EU is facing the introduction of a new treaty that changes the nature of the EU and gives the EU more of a US like system rather then each country on its own.

The politicians are in favor but in a referendum the people so far have rejected it consistently.

If it comes to party voting, the EU matters very little but if people can actually make their voice heard on the issue directly...

Focus less on what party you belong to but decide what you stand is on the issues and then vote for who you think will represent the most important ones the way you want to BUT does not go against other core values.

Frankly, this is hard and most voters fail horribly.

Def. Democratic.... wow...

stem cell research doesnt hurt the fetus... troops choose to be out there whether what the government tells them is the truth or not they signed up for it... people decided how much money they will make for themselves others dont its all the path they chose. immigration.. is good when its legal any other way is breaking the law doesnt give time for the economy to adjust to the over population of people. there is no such thing as a racist... human is a race black and white are ethnicities and i believe we are all from the human race???....

A female reader, anonymous, writes (13 July 2008):

The biggest difference between a democrat and a republican is on their views of how to manage and respond to the economy. They both favor different economic principles. Basically, Republicans believe in tax cuts and Democrats believe in government spending.

For instance, Republicans generally believe in having minimal government intervention when it comes to money matters. They think this is the most efficient way to create jobs and wealth in this country. Basically they are hardcore capitalists who believe that an unregulated market is of the utmost efficiency. That is why they are known to always give back tax dollars because they believe that people are most efficient at spending their own money and creating their own jobs and their own welfare than the government. The irony about republicans is that while they are not going to help you get health care or social services if you are unemployed (since they try to stay out of money and social welfare matters), yet they're always intervening in matters of people's personal choices such as abortion and gay marriage rights.

Democrats, on the other hand, believe that government intervention is necessary. They believe that an unregulated market creates many inequalities and inefficiencies. Their solution to market deficits and problems is not by giving money back to the people and letting them resolve on their own but rather to spend the money themselves and offer help and services. So in times of recession or heavy unemployment, you won't get tax cuts, but you will get social services to alleviate your money issues. And while they will intervene to help you get healthcare and jobs, they tend to stay out of people's personal matters such as abortions and such.

There are also alot of more differences I could go on about. One for instance is, Republicans, since they believe in minimal govt intervention, always wait till a problem arises before they take action (this idea of "waiting" is actually a theory on how to manage the country, and not some angry opinion I just made up). A perfect example of this is the catastrophe in New Orleans caused by Hurricane Katrina. Had they fixed the levies which they had been advised to fix, they could have saved many lives. Democrats on the other hand, believe in premeditating problems and avoiding them before they happen. This all has to do with political and economic theories that advises different ways on how to manage a country.

It seems like you are really confused by the terms other people give you. Forget about parties and think about interests. Some people will vote for a candidate purely based upon what party they are representing, they are called "party voters".

Your main concern should not be "how should I be classed?" but what are current concerns and issues, how do they relate to American ideals (under the constitution and such) and how do they make you feel personally and why?

This is a task any responsible citizen must take on. It will require you to read and use your abilities to reason.

Don't be a sheep though! Make your own decisions and trust your own instincts.
