A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Hey guys. This is not a relationship question, but more a question for your view point.

Im 18 years of age, and suffering from a condition that my doctor is not quite certain of yet. I also have crohns disease. My condition is something to do with my womb which is causing permanent thrush, this then flares my crohns disease, and leaves me doubled in agony, Im currently having tests to see what could be causing this permanent thrush etc. (Most people suggest diabetes, ive been tested and i have not got that)

Well last week, in my local supermarket, i had a sudden attack. My crohns disease flared and my other condition, this caused me to collapse. I was carried inside by my friend that i was with, i then sat in there photo booths (which was right by where i collapased) and waited for my friend to get me a sugary drink.(When i have an attack a cold drink helps to cool and calm me down) I was doubled over in agony, you could see the sweat pouring off me, (it looked like i had been in a shower) I was very pale and sloached in a photo booth.

A women that worked for the supermarket and in their uniform walked past, in which i cried out excuse me, and asked her if she could please fetch me a drink before i fainted. (I was so hot and my vision was blurring, it felt as if i was being swallowed by a black hole) To which this women looked at me, and said she had just finished her shift, so was no longer on duty, before telling me to 'see my doctor' with a look of pity, she then stared at me nearly crying for a few minutes, before walking off.

Passers by stopped and asked if they could do anything, and someone suggested maybe getting me an ambulance. My friend then came with my drink, which I sat and sipped for a few minutes, this helped to cool myself down, stop myself from panicking before the pains started to gradually become better and start to go away.

I then left the store and went home. A week later everybody that i have told about this, and everybody that my parents have told about this has said i should complain about the member of staff. As a member of staff, on duty or not, if she see's somebody in need of her help she should of atleast alerted another member of staff about myself.

What do you think? It will all obviously be on CCTV, as in my post i said my vision was blurred, i dont know her name, but i know her face. If they checked the CCTV they would see her for themselves as well.

Do you think i should complain?

Firstly you need to ask yourself what you hope to gain from making a complaint.

My gut instinct tells me that you shouldn't bother complaining, at least, not until you have a clear outcome which you hope to gain from doing so. It just strikes me a bit that you will be giving yourself extra stress and making trouble over something which has now been and gone. Don't give yourself unnecessary worry.

This is really about people and their character...even if you tried to get her a slapped wrist....she is what she is and i doubt it will have any effect on her anyway....remember she never cared about you!

you may feel better but i would not waste my energy on people like this.

AuntyAlexxmo agony auntWhat would reporting her achieve? Do you really want this lady to get in trouble, would that make you feel better in some way? Yes she should have been more helpful, but she wasnt working and as a general passer by it isnt her job to look after you, even if it would have been the decent thing to do.

Honeypie agony auntI don't know if you would "get" anything out of it. She might have assumed you were on drugs, drunk or just really sick..

However, I think it was kind of callous to just walk away from you.

Hope your doctor figure out what is up with you.

A female reader, neomum United Kingdom +, writes (15 May 2011):

i would say yes as i am from the uk most stores have a policy that states that if you are still in uniform outside or inside the store you are bring the company into dispute ie acting outside the company's rules, this lady should be discipline as her shift was not over until she walked outside the store with a coat over her uniform. talk to the store manager. i had a member of staff myself like this person who left a old man in pain down one of the aisles late one night he asked for help she said no my shift is over she never told anyone he was there when another member found him 20 mins later it was to late. bosses will always pay extra overtime if staff stay and help if customers are ill in store or worse and staff gets bonus for going that extra mile.

If the lady was off duty then she should of got changed out of her uniform because well she is wearing her uniform she is representing the company...although on the other hand I do agree with with the previous comments...what is it you want out of this, if you are wanting to get her reprimanded then then why? She is off duty and it's her own time so she didn't have to help you, yes she was probably rude and should of at least alerted another member of staff but she might of been in a rush, might of had to pick her children up..anything, i know once I finish work I have to get straight off to pick my little boy up from nursery, if I had of seen you I would of quickly alerted someone else but to be honest she probably didn't mean anything by it and you had already asked your friend to go get you a drink so why did you need this member of staff to go get you one too. I would just leave it, you are ok, there's no harm done and she was off duty :)

Hi I am the poster of the question.

When i stopped her she was walking into the store, she wasn't leaving the store to go and get her child or whatever else was mentioned. She has a sandwich in her hand so im guessing she was going to eat dinner.

The point of reporting was because everybody had said to me, she was in their uniform, going into their shop, and she had seen somebody in agony. I wouldn't of called and asked if she had been dressed like another member of the public, the reason why i called her was because i was in that particular store and she was wearing that particular uniform.

Walking into the shop she could of alerted anybody, the fact that she was a member of staff was so easy for her to have told somebody.

The reason a lot of people had spoken to me about was the fact that she did not know what was wrong with me, i could of been a diabetic desperately in need of a sugary drink, or something serious that i needed to go to hospital for. Yet she simply walked on into the shop.

I work for another store, which is opposite the store, and even though its only around my university study's, i still had a three day training, in which my staff handbook says, if i am in the shop and an emergency happens, whether im working or not working, dont ignore it.

The example that it's giving, is if a young child is lost, don't ignore it, alert a member of staff. The other example is abut if somebody has slipped and hurt themselves.

Maybe im wrong, but i thought all retail work was pretty much the same. My friend works for the same store, and she seemed to think there was behind each private door, a key pad, in which had buttons on for what you needed. For example different members of staff. Apparently their customer services deals with injured people/ill people.

A female reader, CindyCares Italy +, writes (15 May 2011):

CindyCares agony aunt No. She was off duty . She was the same as any other customer on the premises. If another client had refused to help you, you would not be asking for the tape so you can snitch to this other client's employer, right ?

There is no legal "duty of rescue " in UK. People can decide whether to assist you or to ignore you.

If this woman had been on duty, bringing you a drink would have been pertaining,in a sense, to her general work of assisting the clientele, or anyway the supermarket management would see it this way. But the management can't tell their employees how to act in their free time .

fishdish agony auntWhat would be the benefit? Do you just want peace of mind, for all workers to be more aware of conditions that face their patrons? For people to work overtime to help someone in need? I think it depends on what your goals of talking to them and making them witness the tape would be..
