writes: I have a question about birth control. My girlfriend was on the pill (Ortho Tri Cyclen Low) for about 4 years. She took a 6 month break and has been back on it for about 10 months now. She takes it each morning when she gets up, but that time varies. Usually its around 7am since she works 5 days a week and leave around that time, but sometimes, if she's off from work, she doesn't take it until 10 or 11am. On the weekends she usually takes it around 9am.I've been looking for a straight answer and can't seem to find one anywhere on the internet... Is it okay if I ejaculate inside her? All the instructions for the pill say that it needs to be taken at the same time each day but does that mean that it needs to be taken at the EXACT same time each day (i.e., 7:06am)? Since her time varies, am I still safe to finish inside because pulling out is really becoming a burden. I'd just like to have worry free sex. The thing too, is that we want to have kids one day, but not anytime soon. And before the politically correct answers come up, we've been together for 6 years and are completely faithful to each other. We live together and there's no change of STD's or anything. We're going to be getting engaged soon. I just need to know if it's safe for me to finish inside her based on her pill-taking timetable. Thanks!

A couple of hours difference in the morning is not going to reduce the efficacy of the pill. If you read the instructions for orthotricyclen, it says that even if you miss a day, just take it when you remember and take the next one at the regular time. It is only if and after you miss TWO pills in a row that you should use a back up method of birth control. So no, you should not have to worry AT ALL about a couple hours variation. I know this because that's how I take mine. It's never at EXACTLY the same time. Just think how many unwanted pregnancies would occur if taking it at the EXACT same time was a requirement. Orthotricyclen would not have been on the market this long, if that was to happen.

Hi!Like a previous poster said the pill isn't effective for 1% and sometimes pregnancy can occur even if you are taking it 100% on time. However most of my friends use this method of contraception and they are fine. As long as your girlfriend takes it the same time each day (as she has been) you should be fine. If this is a worry for you, then maybe ask her if she could take it at the exact same time each day, just to put your mind at ease. When I was on the pill- although not the same brand- it did say it was better to keep the pill- taking on time each day. I you guys have been using it and having unprotected sex with no pregnancy then you should be fine. Make sure that your girlfriend knows that when she is ill (like vomiting and diarrhoea) the pill isn't effective and you should wear condoms.Naturally condoms and the pill would be the safest combination, but I know that some guys don't like this option as much. If you are still wary then you should sit down with her and talk about it. You're lucky you are in a commited relationship and doesn't have to worry about STI's and so have other options. You could look into the contraceptive implant, the Depo- shot, loads of other stuff. There is always the Cup and spermacide for her- this as well as the pill would make a great option. It isn't like condoms that you can feel but gives that extra barrier. Hope this helps :) X

Let me just say this I took the pill everyday at the same time.... I got pregnant. Dr told me I guess your the one percent that it doesn't work for. Spermicide seems to work well for me. They sell ortho in prepackaged tubes..I use the gel it works immediatly. Dr also say you can get pregnant while using this. Condoms work best.

Hey man. No birth control is 100% effective so you should always use two kinds if you really don't want to get pregnant. Just use condoms. They have different ones for different affects or whatever. Dont take the chance.

I think you will be fine to ejaculate inside her, you can never be 100% sure that she wont get pregnant but the chances of it happening are very unlikely.
I have been on the pill for years now and I take mine normally before I go to bed - but this varies from night to night, sometimes I can be taking it at 10pm, other times it might be 1am! I know I am taking a little bit of a risk but I have been on the pill for 6 years and never once had a pregnancy scare, so I think in your case she will be fine.
The pill works by fooling the body into thinking its pregnant so it doesnt release an egg. So even if she takes it a few hours late the body still wont have chance to realise there is no egg and rapidly release it. If there is no egg to fertilise then there is no way she can get pregnant! Each pill a woman takes tops up the levels of hormones from the last one taken, so that the levels of hormones stay constant and the body maintains that constant idea it is pregnant. So as long as you take the pill roughly every 24 hours then there will be no problem. It is only when the girl hasnt taken a pill within 12 hours of the normal time when problems can occur.
It is up to you how you want to proceed - I personally think you will be totally fine to ejaculate inside her but it just depends how much of a worrier you are! If you tend to worry lots then this sort of thing might play on your mind so it is all up to you!
I hope this helps!

It's not necessarily "safe" she could still get pregnant...but it's probably unlikely. I've never been a pill-taker at the exact same time...more like generally in the same time period like your gf, and I have never gotten pregnant even without a backup method while I was on the pill. But there's still a chance, so it's up to you and her!

reader, anonymous, writes (18 September 2009): The pill changes hormones in her body over a period of days. It's not immediately effective the first day she takes the pill. It has to build up hormones in her system over a period of weeks and that build up does not disappear after a few hours. So I cannot imagine a few hours makes a difference. Here's why...My g/f was on the pill for 4 years and she was not very deliberate with the time she took the pill each day either. Some days she forgot. I always came inside her and never had an issue. We had a lot of sex, usually twice a day, so if it mattered we would have paid for it.When we started hearing about the pill having links to cancer she stopped taking the pill and I started pulling out. At the last minute and she would finish me by hand and I would unload on her stomach. We did it that way for a few years into our marriage. When we decided to have kids, she got pregnant the very first time I came inside her again. But she had been off the pill for about 3 years at this point so the hormone levels were back to normal. We had two more kids since then and each time she got pregnant right after I came inside her.The point I am making is that even with her taking the pill erratically I came inside her twice a day on average for 4 years and nothing unexpected happened. As soon as we had sex with her being off the pill she got pregant right away. I mean right away each time... 3 kids.I think the pharmaceutical companies cover their ass by saying it has to be the same time each day.Don't worry, just enjoy and unload. You may want to read a little about the cancer links, though.
