A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Right now I am having a very hard time to lose weight. I keep on wanting to lose weight but it doesn't seem to work out. The main problem is I keep on craving for food. If I don't get those cravings out, I go crazy and it makes me want it more. So I give in to my cravings. Then I just ruined my diet.

I would like to lose 25 pounds before I go back to school.

Please help.

I am in my 40's and in January decided it was time to lose weight. I needed to lose 100 pounds to be a my ideal weight. The place where I work started the Biggest Loser Contest. I decided to join. I ended up winning. I lost 54 1/4 pounds. I found a website called 45 Pounds.com where I could purchase meal plans based on the foods that I liked. I was very easy to follow. I also started going to the gym with my daughter. We went everyday faithfully. We did cardio and weight training.

My advice is to eat healty, find someone to exercise with you,(It's more fun with a partner), and DO NOT give up. It is not easy when you crave foods. Set small goals for you to meet while getting to your large goal. For example: once you have lost 10 pounds go to the spa for a massage. My daughter and I did body wraps. They are great!

The other thing that has helped my is WATER!! And lots of it. I try to drink close to a gallon or more a day.

Good Luck and remember, DO NOT GIVE UP! STAY POSSITIVE!!!

I am in your same boat, i went to a personal trainer today and he says make sure that you take a multi-vitamin which i did not know. Also make sure you are working out at least five times a week, i know its hard but it is the only way to get effective results. Dont weigh yourself, it will make you feel worse and its just a number. also, most girls dont think they should but get protein and just take a scoop of it after you work out. make sure you are cutting out pop, even gatorade. stick to WATER! have a well balanced diet, if you have cravings instead just have some fruit, its high in sugar, but its fructose sugar which is actually good for you. weight training is a must for girls because we need that lean mass. stick in there. im trying to lose 15 pounds before school starts, SO LETS GET IT DONE GIRL!

Why don't you join a weight loss center like weight watchers or jenny craig? I know that when I was younger, I had put on a lot of weight and I got really fat. And I had your same problem where I was addicted to food and could not get over my cravings for food. And so I went to Jenny Craig and they put me on a diet and I was only allowed to eat the foods that they gave me. And it worked out great. I ended up losing about 25 lbs. And then after that, I lost some more weight on my own and I have been skinny ever since.

Its something you should look into and I can assure you that it works.

A male reader, Solidus  United States +, writes (19 July 2008):

Solidus agony auntI used to weigh 311 lbs and now I weigh 205. I lost over a hundred pounds doing several things...

#1 Cardio Workout first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. (I rode a stationary bike 30 mins) Amps up your metabolism and burns like 3x more fat throughout the day! You'll lose like 3-4 pounds a week.

#2 Stop eating bad stuff. Once you start working out hard you'll equate food with work...thus you won't want to eat XX minutes on the bike or treadmill and choose something better instead. Remember, everything bad you DON'T eat is time you DON'T have to spend exercising.

#3 Add some weight lifting, nothing too intense just 30 mins twice a week or so. Adding muscle helps you burn fat.

#4 After you've been working out for a while switch to High Intensity Interval Training. Basically you bust your ass for 15 minutes and burn 4x more fat! More results, half the workout time. Great right? For the details on HIIT do a search.

I hope this helps. ;-)

A female reader, Minelisse Puerto Rico +, writes (19 July 2008):

Minelisse agony auntAt your age, if you only want to loose 25 pounds, I would not do a lot whole of dieting, I would go with taking up a sport and doing it daily.

There is an Internet site called Sparklepeople (or something of the sort). It's free and it is a community of people trying to loose weight. There you will find people within your age range and with common goals with which you can make liaisons and competitions. There are a lot of people from the States so you could even find people near you to start some exercising and dieting together.

Best of lucks!

Here's another part that shows a study about weight training compared to aerobics for fat loss:

And here's a page with this quote:

"Weight training intensity also seems to be the key component for fat loss"

A male reader, iateadonut China +, writes (19 July 2008):

Lifting heavy weights is the best way to lose weight.

A study by the University of California showed that dieting alone only leads to short term weight loss, and no significant fat loss. 2 years after starting a diet, dieters were FATTER than a control group on no diet!

Start lifting weights. You're not going to lose 25 lbs before school. It might be a better goal to have a good body in 2 years.

Here's a good website to learn about your body and the different exercises you can do:

http://www.exrx.net/WeightTraining/Myths.html

(This page directs to some myths about weight loss. The rest of the site is very good also.)
