Bush wants to redefine birth control as "abortion", what do you think?

A female United States age 41-50, Yargh writes:

This site seems to have a good cross section of folks from different walks of life, so I wanted to see what people out there think about this. The Bush administration is proposing a redefining of the term "abortion" to include birth control. The proposal would allow health workers object to "abortion" to refuse women access to birth control. See the details here:

http://www.abcnews.go.com/Politics/Vote2008/story?id=5397146 and page=1

Personally, this makes me extremely angry. Women should have the right to regulate their own bodily functions. Preventing contraception is not the same as abortion, as the sex cells only has half the DNA necessary to develop before they are fertilized. Even if it were, abortion is legal here, and so this should not be an issue. Whats next, accusing menstruating women of monthly murder? Legal ramifications for spilling your seed? All teenage boys would have to become fugitives! Anyway, I am interested in hearing all of your opinions, so weigh in if you please.

-Matt- agony auntdear, politically awful

im sorry but, you are the stereotypical brainwashed american, do you not realise that your whole *beloved* country is controlled by the media? you are told what the government wants you to be told. did you know that Rupert Murdoch owns around 90% of ALL the media? thats fact not opinion. furthermore your *beloved* Mr Bush and his confederates caused 9/11, there is video evidence supporting this. Two buildings that are hit by airplanes dont drop straight down perfectly. Aviation fuel was burning at some ridiculous temperature but still someone can stroll onto the rubble at ground zero and find a terrorist passport? under tonnes upon tonnes of rubble?

9/11 was planned so iraq could be invaded and the ever depleting oil supplies could be topped up, oh did i mention Bush's family are into the oil company, no wmd's ever existed in iraq.

9/11 was a conspiracy and your *beloved* Bush has blood on his hands. most of the things i have listed are facts not opinion or speculation and you cant argue with facts but there is denial because that seems to work for you.

By the way its not just adults "arguing" im 15.

Politically Lawful

I agree that everyone has the right to freedom of speech, I admire those with opinions and the ability to have a sensible, intelligent conversation. I said you would not be welcome here because your opinions, your posts, were offensive. "What the heck do you Britts(Floater & Honning Kannin) know about George Bush", simply the way you have phrased your posts is offensive. To have an intelligent, informed conversation about your opinions is great but you need to be able to accept that other people have different perspectives, especially if you are into politics.

In response to one of your previous posts, I am not misguided, I don't take any information from 'Michael Moore', never even seen anything he has done. I don't think that Bush kills our troops, I haven't been decieved into thinking the troops are killing civilians, I know that for a fact. Not only civilians but there have been plenty of reports on friendly fire also. Please don't make assumptions of what I do or don't know.

Lastly, the reason people have described your views as 'slanted' is because you do not seem willing to accept any other opinions but your own, and this site is for everyone to have their say and their opinion, whether you agree with it or not you can't tell them they are wrong for their opinions. The people responding to your posts are not 'fighting a 12 year old', we are having a debate on our views and you are being quite ignorant in your responses to them, they are not a personal attack to you so you shouldn't take them in that way. And, we are not all 20+ women, I am 18. Trust me, we all believe that you are a twelve year old kid. We are debating politics, not fighting about it, and the fact that you called the people who have responded "sad and pathetic" is again quite offensive. Just because you are the only one with your view does not mean we are fighting with you, this is what happens in political debates, sometimes it may be the case that you are the only person seeing one perspective, you will need to take it less personally in future.

If you are concerned about having a debate with adults and your mother is not happy about this then perhaps you should find a childs website for you to voice your opinions.

A reader, anonymous, writes (22 July 2008):

If you are old enough to get involved in a political discussion then your age is largely irrelevant. You do have a valid opinion, but you can not then justify your point and disregard the argument purely on grounds of your age. If you want to be involved in an adult discussion, act an adult and don't refute the argument because of it.

I happened to think you raised some interesting points, but you are also rather arrogant and self-assuming, especially for someone so young who hasn't yet even begun living a life as an adult and faced the challenges and situations that mold who we are and form these very questions that you seem to answer so easily.

A credit to your parents who have managed to clearly instill some pretty strong opinions in you, but don't forget humility it perhaps a more desirable quality than arrogance is. You have many years to follow you before you can make informed judgements on these topics, so perhaps you should remember that fact before you argue so vehemently with everyone else.

You're Compareing things that save lives with something that prevents it. Chemotheorpy saved my father's life when he had cancer. My mom is going to need a C-Section in order to save her baby. Invetro fertilazation helps couples who have trouble having babies bring life to the world.

P.S. I don't take the Bus to school,I go to a catholic school

I would also like to respond to what Yargh and DiovanLestat

said.

Yargh, you said you could "school" me, but it's not worth it. Go ahead i wanna hear what you have to say, I gotpleanty of time with my mom stuck on bed rest for 3 months,I don't believe sex is just for babies, but that was what it's meant to do. Opinons of sex have changed over thousands of years and I will also more than likly in the futrue have sex for pleasure not for children if im un-married and probally most of my friends will do the same thing, that's just because the world has made sex into something we all have to do and it takes strong willed people to avoid it till marriage, unlike someone like you who is afariad of spending money constantly on birth control.

You and everyone else are calling my views "slanted". Well i guess if I'm slanted, your views are slanted too, only to a diffrent direction. My views aren't all slanted, I said i was fo rgun control and against the death penalty, infact I said it once and I'll say it again I DON'T THINK BIRTH CONTROL IS THE SAME AS ABORTION and that's what this disscusion is about.

DiovanLestat,

I think your intentions are in the right path and i myself wanted to leave an opinon on this issues and i did, but when you talk politics about one isssue it will more than likly lead to another and another and another. I am not the only person who is wasting there time arguing. YOU 20+ YEAR OLD WOMEN ARE WASTING YOUR TIME FIGHTING A 12 YEAR OLD!!

I just showed my mom this disscusion and she thinks it's pretty sad that adults have enough time to talk politics against a kid and the fact you all keeep relentlessly fighting back against me is pathetic. She thinks that you don't believe I'm a kid, well I am, but the worst thing is that 5 or 6 women are all ganging up against a child, you should all be embaressed

A female reader, hislilgoobear United States +, writes (22 July 2008):

hislilgoobear agony auntNo in fact that can't be farther from the truth. Abortion is the act of killing the unborn fetus, you are already pregnant when this occurs. However, birth control is a method of hormones that is released to trick your body into thinking that it is pregnant so that it won't release eggs, however there is still the birth control in a pill form that still allows you to menstrate regularly. This is caused from the last week pills, it stops the ferrimones from being produced and relaxes your hormones to produced regularly where your body no longer feels tricked into thinking that it is pregnant. After your menstration week the pills start right back up into tricking your body. Thus my conclusion, if the egg isn't release it can't be aborted. So how can this be at all close related to abortion??? The morning after pill yes, birth control no.

Yargh agony auntThanks to everyone for your thoughtful responses. I started this discussion because I felt like there are already too many unwanted children, and I hate to see something that would lead to more. If birth control becomes harder to get I imagine that many people may just roll the dice. Also, I can only see this leading to more real abortions, which the Right is supposedly against. For me, I am in favor of a women's right to choose, but would like women to be well equipped with knowledge and yes birth control, so perhaps that tough choice will not have to be faced.

I already struggle with birth control, as I am uninsured and have to pay for it out of pocket. Which also means, contrary to Politically Lawful's belief, that if I were to become very ill I would likely die. Perhaps I could incur a great amount of debt, recover, and spent the rest of my life paying it off.

In any event, I applaud all women who take the necessary precautions in their sexual relationships. As Fade878 put it, children have serious needs, and are a major responsibility. People who make sure that children only arrive when they are wanted are doing themselves and the children a great service. I may have children one day, but how could I bring them into my present situation where I have no health insurance and live paycheck to paycheck? It would be irresponsible, which is why I hope birth control is readily accessible until I reach the stage where I no longer need it.

Hi PoliticalyLawful,

I've been listening to you spout off your unintelligent, biased views all day. Why are you here, this is a site that helps people with relationship and sexual problems, not a place for a political debate. Your a clever kid, I like politics too, and like you I've been political since the day I was born. But I like informed debate where I can listen and learn from people have different experiences from me. Please go and find a political website where such arguments are welcome and there are people willing to debate every single one of your points. About.com is a good place to start, there are a range of political views and plenty of people that like arguing too.

You are taking up valuable time from Aunts and Uncles who have real problems to solve. You defend your mighty leader, well that's what you choose to do. The rest of us are here trying to get marriages to work, extend contraception to those who need it most and help women who have been used for purely breeding purposes to realise their is more to life than religion and duty. You fight political campaigns, last night I spent a lot of time trying to convince a young girl who had been raped to go to the police.

Of course you have a right to your views, we do too, but there are real human people here with problems that cause them to suffer, go find a political site and fight with somebody that cares.

Dear HonningKanin,

Your making assumptions by saying that I only watch FOX.

Dear Yargh,

Dear Ask Oldersister,

Just because of my age dosen't mean i can't comprehend the issues and the big picture.

How Ethonal makes farmers want to grow more corn for energy instead of food, rasing the price of corn and corn syrup and raising the prices of other foods that are becoming rarer because farmers want to grow corn for ethonal. THE BIG PICTURE: THIS RAISES THE OF ALMOST ALL FOODS HURTING THE ECONOMY

How Universal Health Care could cause people like Ted Kennedy that develop cancer to have to wait serval months to be treated while without Universal Health Care he could get treatmant within the week (like he did). THE BIG PICTURE: UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE MAY SEEM GOOOD, BUT IN THE LONG RUN CAN CAUSE PEOPLE WITH SERIOUS ILLNESSESS TO DIE

How Illegal Immigrants can take American Jobs and cause the unemploymant rate can go up and Illegals cause the crime rate to go up . BIG PICTURE: ILLEGALS COME TO OUR COUNTRY IN HOPES OF FUFILLING THE AMERICAN DREAM, BUT THEY ONLY DESTROY IT

P.S. Saddam Hussien killed 500,000+ people

P.P.S. If this war is fought for oil where is it, let me guess Dick Cheyney has it in his garage

Dear ask oldersister,

I understand my point about "infultrating" this disscussion and i was going to leave a serious comment, but i was only defending the leader of my country.

Your comparing of Breast Feeding to pills is apauling, nature created Breast Feeding and it's natural. Birth control pills go against nature and are created to defy it.

Dear HonningKanin,

I watch all the networks and the only one that dosen't have a Libreal Slant is FOX and i watch all other stations to laugh at how they can call themselves "mainstream". Why do you even have to whine about FOX anyway, Libreals control Movies, TV(especially Law&Order, but I love that show), Bookstores, Videogames(which I'll Still Play),Universities(which is probally where you learned everything you know about politics from some Proffesor that spends hi weekends at save the trees rallies), and the Rest of Hollywood. I am not close minded, I listen to all sides and pick my stances, I'm more a Catholic than a Conservative, I'm pro-life, against the death penalty, and for some gun control. Now i want to make my stance on this issue, I don't believe that Birth Control is the same as abortion, but I don't think it should be used because all sex is a process for having children, all animals have sex for mateing not for pleasure. TV and Hollywood have turned Sex into something we all have to do for pleasure.

Our media does not tell us how 'horrible' Bush is, in fact our news doesn't give us biased views like that, it just gives us the news. The information about the world and current events, so that we can make our own opinions. Even entertainment programmes don't tell us that George Bush is 'horrible', just that he is a dumbass (usually with film-clip evidence of him making a complete fool of himself during speeches).

The war IS about oil, and power. Iraq WAS destroyed by the war, how can you say it wasn't? Sure, chuck a few bombs in there, murder a few innocents, that will really brighten up the place. No, they aren't being killed by an evil dictator, they are being killed by the people who are supposed to be helping them, but are too concerned with gaining power, and oil.

A female reader, HonningKanin Norway +, writes (21 July 2008):

HonningKanin agony auntDear PoliticalyLawful,

My name is actually on the screen so I dont know how you can misspell it.

On the issue of politics I dont know how serious you are about it and neither do you about me. So there is again another assumption you need to stop making. You dont know if I know the issues or not. You dont know how informed I am so the best stance is a safe one were you believe your opponent knows just as much as you. Only then could you find out if they do or dont and a 5 year old knows just as much about the issues of politics as it does about where babies come from(to which this question is indirectly about).

Now I am not saying you now dont anything about politics or dont know more than you did then, but again you are making huge judgmental beliefs, based on nothing cause you dont know me, that I only debate politics on relationship websites when a fleeting glance at my last posts would tell you otherwise. I would advise you that you need to stop being so arrogant, narrow minded and grow up. If you are going to hold a conversation with adults on subjects like these be prepared to hear arguements from all sides, from all part of the world(especially on the net), on any site, and of all ages so dont play the teen card. If you want to be taken seriously for your opinions you cant just say "You're debating with a teen." That means nothing to me.

I will also argue and put my two scents in anywhere anyone will ask. It can be on a Zen Buddhist site for all I care. You still don't get people are allowed to have an opinion and are allowed to express it anywhere they want.

And on this matter of birth control, if anything, you should take interest in because it does have serious impacts on the way people live, the possible supression of womens rights, teen/unwanted pregnancies, the definition of abortion (cause birth control can also be condoms) and the effects of population and crime. So pay attention to the issue that was asked instead of where the opinions are coming from. If you disagree with the opinion state why. Thats how it goes instead of trying to make silly jabs first at the opponents knowledge of the issues.

FOX is not the only news broadcaster that posts both sides. You have NBC, ABC, CNN, CBS and even Univision (Latin American, North American based, News network. Yes I speak spanish too). Not to mention all the other side news shows like Cross Fire and 60 minutes. All those programs would not be News Networks if they didn't cover both sides.

Variety also gives you a broader knowledge of whats going on. Like casting a bigger net to get a better picture. Some networks give you information other networks ignore and such. Dont put all your eggs into one basket.

I live in Santa Fe, New Mexico, which is a very Catholic town, and I have no doubt that someone would eventually deny me my prescription.

To address your other point, are you saying that with Bush at the helm post 9/11 this country has not been screwed up? My God, have you looked around lately, or listened to the news!? We are in a war for oil that has destroyed a country and caused numerous military and civilian casualties. We are on the brink of a major recession. HonningKanin agony auntDear PoliticalyLawful,

This just shows you how much you actually know and are just making assumptions. Believe it or not I am actually an American Expate and live in Northern Ireland(Northern Ireland falling under the United Kingdom hence the Union Jack to show where I am). I have already filled in my FVAP Form because I am an Ununiformed and overseas citizen and I pay alot of attention to what happens.

Even if I wasn't an American everyone has a right to an opinion and the news that is Broadcasted out here is far better than the news I would get back in the states. It is far more informative than CNN which I feel just pays more attention to celebrities than current events. I cant remember how many times I get so fustrated watching American News because they seems concentrated with superficialities. Obama's "Terrorist fist jab" to his wife... Please... That got no air time here in Great Britain. I listen to both the official news broadcasted out of America (not just CNN)and the News broadcasted here so I have a very accurate opinion of which one is better, where you are just assuming and dont know.

Your last comment I found very funny and very ignorant because people in Europe have more time to take a "plane" over than most average Americans can. My friends from highschool can NEVER visit me due to bills where as I am ALWAYS flying over to see them and we earn the same, cash in hand. So it is YOU that should catch a plane over to Europe and experience it before you make your own un-enlightened assumptions of what Europeans are thinking and find out for yourself. You would be surprised to know how many Europeans pay great attention to the Politics around the world, not just America, and are very well informed and can hold a very good conversation about the working politics in American. Not just about the current events, but history and how the system in the United States actually work.

HonningKanin agony auntThe Bush administration are completely retarded.. I am not sorry at all... when it comes to issues like these. I dont understand why they are making their opinions on abortion and birth control legislation. Its ludicrus.

Never mind the whole genetic facts that the birth control stops sperm from meeting an egg, so therefor nothing can be conceived to be aborted, they are so stupid to realize there is a population crisis. The last thing the world needs is another mouth that cant be fed because there isn't enough to go around or cant be properly taken care of. Why not just pay attention to the ones that are already here and try and sort them out first before worrying about ones that aren't even concieved!

Birth control is the responsible course of people not producing higher numbers of unwanted children and studies have shown that crime goes up in conjuntion with the number of unwanted births. Go to any country with a low crime rate and you will see low amounts of unwanted pregnancies and even lower amounts of abortions in comparison. Why? Because the governing body has recognised that people have sexual creatures and its very important to inform them instead of telling them to just say no.

Yargh agony auntThanks for your responses. At this point you can just google "Bush contraception" and a bunch of results come up, in responses from Pelosi, Clinton, etc.

A male reader, LazyGuy Netherlands +, writes (19 July 2008):

LazyGuy agony auntSomething similar happend in The Netherlands. Gay marriage is legal here and as such gay people have the right to be married in an official ceremony with a goverment employee conducting it.

The christians never liked this but the CDA was doing very badly, so they had no way of stopping it. Sadly, after the assasination of Pim Fortyun people played it safe and put them back in power and they made a coalition with the Christen Union.

So they tried to introduce a law that makes is possible for goverment employees to have moral objections to gay marriage and refuse to do these ceremonies.

They couldn't stop gay marriage directly because that would violate the dutch constitution (everyone is equal and should be treated equally in the same circumstances, this makes a ban on gay marriage illegal) but they sure could do everything to mess it up.

In practice things aren't nearly as bad as they seem, first off, the number of people who object is small, there are other places to get married but it allowed the parties involved to show their supporters they were doing something.

Same thing I think here. There seems little change such a law would make it in the US especially with elections so soon, but it allows the republicans to posture to their supporters they are though on this issue while at the same time McCain can distance himself enough from it to not upset to many voters from the center.

The problem is that democracy in the form of elections is basically flawed. You are basically left with the choice of electing the guy who is the least bad choice. Far better would be a system where every decision is decided by referendum, but no major party will ever support this since no major party can then ever put through laws that don't have the support of the people.
