If your moms aware of how your menstrual cycle is let her know your concerns, don't take birth control if you do not wish too go see your doctor and put your worried behind you.

You're only 16/17, leave it for a little to see if it settles naturally, jumping straight for hormones is not good advice. Its true, the hormones in the pill COULD balance you out, it could also make them heavier, more frequent, neverending or make you physically ill in other ways.
I say leave it for a while and if it doesnt start to settle, consult your GP

This may settle down over time as you're still a teenager but it could be something more serious like poly cystic overies. To be on the safe side visit your doctor and they can give you the best advice. You can ask to speak to a female doctor/nurse of thats an issue. As The Realist said, the contraceptive pill can be taken to reduce the frequency and heavyness of periods.

You can try a form of birth control. The hormones usually balance that out to a regular once a month occurance. This is definitly something you can talk to your doctor about.
