 Hi Cathy I have a friend who has almost exactly the same problem as you- ok it is the same problem as you. Its a very common problem and no you are not pathetic. The best way to make this guy interested in you is to be interesting and confident and the best way for that is to build up your flirting skills. Act towards him as you would around a friend and eventually you will have the confidence to take things to another level, this guy is only human and remember to be yourself. If you become friends first you will develop a self confidence around him which cannot be atained with low self esteem. Spark up some conversation with him, trust me, even if you've got nothing really worth saying he won't mind, and he'll probably get the hit you like him.
At which point you can ask him to the movies or whatever, and he'll probably do the rest, guys usually make the first move.

 just try and act like urself around him as much as possible.
hang out n do stuff that u both like together with no-one else.
