I am making an appointment with my University’s health office to get myself some sort of birth control, but I’m unsure of what I should get. My school offers : the contraceptive sponge, a diaphragm, a cervical cap, Leah’s shield, birth control pills, NuvaRing, and Depo-Provera.Does anyone have any experience with these things? Ladies, what sort of birth control (besides condoms) do you use? Any help is very appreciated.

Since I am in a monogomous relationship with a child I use the Meriana IUD...Which by the way is AWESOME! But its not one of the choices you listed....so... I know alot of girls who have used the depo shot and gained ALOT of weight. I know one girl who uses the ring and she swears by it. You could always go with the pill there are SO many out there now. You should google all your options and discuss it with your doctor. Hope this helps some!

Well I guess you could say I've tried quite a few. First I tried the pill which is all very well so long as you remember to take it, but also remember that its effectiveness can be damaged by things like an upset stomach. I had little side effects from the pill, just slight weight gain but on the plus side it did alleviate my PMT.
I tried the coil which didn't agree with me at all, it made my periods far too heavy for me to cope with and they also became irregular.
I tried the cap and found this to be completely disagreeable as it removes the spontaneity aspect of a relationship, basically you have to insert it before sex and it does interrupt proceedings. My partner also found this rather 'icky'.
I'm now on the Depo-Provera injections. I have them every 3 months, I just put a reminder on my calendar when they are due. My periods have completely stopped and I can't say I miss them but I appreciate it may be a little alarming for some who think they might be pregnant, easy to check out, just buy a home test to put your mind at rest. I've had no side effects with this either and although it is said it may affect your fertility when you want to have a baby, I came off it after 3 years and was pregnant within 2 months!
As previously said, everybody is different and not all suited to the same birth control. I guess you just have to try and find the the one that suits you and your lifestyle. Having said that though, there is definately no substitution for safe sex and whilst not everybody likes the thought of a condom there is no denying their benefits to prevent STD's. And besides with all the different types of condoms out there treat it as a little bit of fun trying them out, you may find one that truly enhances your sex life.

I am in a serious relationship too... and have been round the block and back with birth control...
First we accidentally didnt use a condom and did the morning after pill thing... which works, im not pregnant so ya! Then we used condoms but they were a pain, so I got a diaphragm that you use with jelly. It worked, but its not good if youre having frequent sex. Basically, you have to leave it in for 6 hours post sex, and well... sometimes it doesnt come out for like 24 hours!! I have realy sensitive skin and i found it painful and irritating, but it works for a lot of people, so... it is an option. Once you get used to it, its ok, so long as you get a jelly youre not allergic to!
So then I went on the pill. First I was on microgynon-30, which is the pill from hell, i got headaches, vision things, bad acne, mood swings, stressyness, i cried all the time, and nearly broke up with my bf about 35 times in about 3 months.
So i went back to the doctor and explained the problem... and he gave me a low-hormone pill (still a combined pill tho, so effective!) called femodene. Ive been on that for about 7 months now and i love it.
There are side effects just as you go on the pill, like, for me increades vaginal discharge that smelled more strong for about a week, andslight mood swings for the first week or two just as your body adjusts...
I hope this helps!! Feel fre to msg me if you have any more questions!

This form of birth control always worked for me, but there are a lot of new options out there. Just go see your doctor armed with a lot of questions, and together I am sure you can choose the appropriate form of birth control for you....it is really about you and your life style and how soon you want to get pregnant or not get pregnant....

Hi there, sweetness...
I've been on the pill for a little while, but I JUST went in the other day and decided to try out the Nuva Ring. I like the pill, but I'm a little forgetful and remembering to take the pill everyday is, well, a task. Also, it was killing what little of a libido I had. They said that the Nuva Ring has the lest amount of hormone changes, and it won't make me feel so up and down...
I haven't actually used it yet, I'm finishing up the last of my pills, but I'll let you know how the Nuva works out.
This isn't the greatest advice, I know... I'm curious what other ladies will say!
