A female reader, anonymous, writes (3 July 2008):

You CAN get pregnant by having unprotected sex during your period and you CAN get pregnant by having unprotected sex even if he pulls out before he ejaculates, as he'll still leak a few little swimmers before he actually orgasms.

Go to a clinic, get tested for any nasties that might be lurking (some, like chlamydia, don't always have symptoms until you find out that they have quietly fried your reproductive organs when you try to start a family and can't get pregnant). Get contraception advise and stick to it. Get contraception for you. Use it properly. get contraception for him (condoms). Make sure he uses it. If he doesn't (and some guys will come up with 1001 amaaaaazing reasons not to) then don't have sex with him because he obviously doesn't care about your health, he obviously doesn't care about his own health, and he's probably not a responsible person who would be there for you if you did get pregnant.

pashanoodle agony auntYour best bet is to assume that ANY unprotected sex you have COULD result in pregnancy....in light of that, if you don't want a child right now you should take steps to ensure you are protected. See someone at a Family Planning Clinic or your Dr for options!

DoubleM agony auntVery unlikely, but an extremely slim possibility. The uterus is simply not in the right cycle for inception during that period of the month for most any woman.

A female reader, Khandi United States +, writes (3 July 2008):

Khandi agony auntfrom what i understand when you are on your period what is hapening is your uterus is shedding its lining, the lining of the uterus is to prepare for an egg to plant itself after being fertalized, when no egg is fertilized the uterus sheds, so no i dont think that you can get pregnant while on your period but i am sure that if you keep having unpretected sex you will. ( no disrespect intended) sis if you dont want to get preg protect yourself. one time is all it takes. dont leave your control of getting pregnant to anyone but you.

A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (3 July 2008):

Tisha-1 agony auntI would recommend that you be in control of your own health and do some more research, both here and at sites like webmd.com and plannedparenthood.org

From what I've learned at plannedparenthood.org, it's not likely, but it can happen. If your menstrual cycle is brief, then your ovulation occurs earlier than other women, and sperm can fertilize an egg up to something like six days after sex inside her body.

Please don't rely on him to provide the best information on birth control. Speak to your doctor, and use a condom in the meantime, even when you're on your period.

Take care.

It is possible for a woman to get pregnant from intercourse during her period, especially if her menstrual cycle is brief.

In a 20-day cycle, for example, ovulation — the release of the egg — may very well occur on Day 6 of her cycle. Her period begins on Day 1. It lasts about five days. But a man's sperm can fertilize an egg up to six days in her body. Let's say this couple has unprotected vaginal intercourse in the first two days of her period. The live sperm can wait to join with her egg when it is released on Day 6. This could cause a pregnancy.

It is also possible that a woman may think she is having her period when she is not. It is also possible to get pregnant during breakthrough vaginal bleeding.

It's not only women with short cycles who need to be careful about unprotected vaginal intercourse during menstruation. Even when cycles are long and regular, ovulation may occur on different days in different cycles. That's why abstinence is necessary for several days in a row for women who choose to use fertility awareness-based methods of contraception.

ChiRaven agony auntIt's not THAT long a chance. Unlikely, but certainly a possibility.

Further proof that often a guy will say and do just about ANYTHING to get what he wants. A good lesson for the future.

A female reader, hlskitten United Kingdom +, writes (3 July 2008):

hlskitten agony auntTheres a chance yes. Its not as much chance as during mid cycle, but none the less there is still a chance there. You will have to wait until your next period is due before you know for sure. You're too far past the time to even take the morning after pill now.

Good luck.
