Is it normal to not like porn?

A male United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

Is it normal to not like porn? All my friends always talk about the porn they watch but whenever I try to watch it... I didn't find it very interesting or arousing, I prefer to just use my imagination when I am masturbating. Is there something wrong with me? By the way I've had three long term relationships and one one night stand and didn't have any trouble being aroused or enjoying sex with them, I really liked it, I just don't like watching others doing it and I've tried lots of different types of porn but none of it aroused me and it never has. So... is this something I should be worried about?

A male reader, nichiren United States +, writes (26 February 2009):

nichiren agony auntNormal does not exist.

Normal is descrition coined by someone to put people's behavoirs into a little box.

Human sexuality is a many splendored thing.

and the fat that you do not like to watch porn is just part of who you are.

Those who enjoy it have a part of them that enjoys watching.

Nothing wrong with it either way.

And porn is oly an addiction if it affects your ability to take care of your necssary responsibilities, like work, hygiene, bills etc.

A reader, anonymous, writes (18 February 2009):

Well, if you don't like porn then you're a hell of a lot more healthy than somebody who watches it every day and becomes addicted to it. You're a relationship guy, therefore you'd prefer to have real live sex with somebody you care about rather then just watch a porn which only shows the sex.

lovelynightmare agony auntOf course. Pornography never equals real sex.

All the videos are repulsive, better for shock value than to turn someone on. I liked the still pictures, but then I realized that I was just creating some stupid fantasy that my future lover could never add up to. Our oversexed culture (a MINORITY of people, most who make the smut) tells us porn is man's best friend, but those who refuse it get A LOT more respect from relationship partners

A male reader, Replacement Canada +, writes (12 February 2009):

Replacement agony auntYes, it is normal, no you shouldn't be worried. Everyone has different preferences, different things that arouse them. As long as you are sexually satisfied and happy, then it's fine, don't let your friends get you down. Not all men, or all people for that matter, are the same.

I prefer my imagination too, so you're not alone.

A female reader, samurai girl United States +, writes (11 February 2009):

samurai girl agony auntIt's not abnormal to not like porn. Don't feel as if you are missing out on something. You are young and with experience your tastes will change, your ideas will change, you will grow. If you feel sexually healthy, you are fine. Don't fret and enjoy your life :-)
