A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I'm going on a first date with a guy I met at a party and we're going to get a drink. I'm not a big drinker and we're both driving there separately. I've maybe drank 5 times in my life. I really don't drink a lot. I already agreed to get a drink so that's what we're doing. I want to order something so I'm still able to drive after. I'm age 21, 5'2'' and weigh about 115 lbs. I was thinking 1 beer but I normally don't drink beer. However, I think I'd like to get used to it. Any suggestions on beer for people who don't like the taste of it? Or should I get a glass of wine? I like chardonnay. Any suggestions are helpful. Thanks

Honeypie agony auntDrink a soda, show that you are responsible. Don't think you have to drink alcohol to "pretend" to be a grown up (even though you are one).

Or if you want to drink a beer get a non-alcoholic one.

Or go with a "virgin" anything you like drink. I personally NEVER call them virgin, it's a Bloody Mary hold the vodka, works for me.

IF you are not used to drinking you might not notice the buzz til you sit in your car.. which isn't good.

Have something like a wine spritzer to start (wine that's diluted with sparkling water - some places lemonade!) and after that stick to soft drinks. If you don't drink much you really don't want to be in a condition where you shouldn't be driving. I very rarely drink so one glass of wine makes my head fuzzy, but sipping on a spritzer has always been fine. I usually have a juice or diet soda after if I feel the need. I agree about eating before hand, if you drink on an empty stomach it can enter your blood stream much faster and affect you quicker. Nothing wrong with meeting for a drink and sticking to a soft drink, if someone had an issue with that I wouldn't think they were all that smart!

Don't drink any alcohol at all OP. I like the virgin cocktail or alcohol free beer idea.

You're not a big drinker, so even one glass of wine can bring you to the goofy tipsy stage. It does for me and I drink lots every weekend. I wouldn't risk it.

But if you feel the need to then eat a big thick, filling meal before you go, plenty of water and have one lite beer that you sip on for a couple of hours and leave it at that.

Another trick I learned OP is to have a few drinks the day before that gets you to the point of being drunk but not crazy drunk and finish early. not only will that work well to test out what you can handle but it'll raise your tolerance a bit, enough to be able to have a drink and it not catch you off guard.

Aunty BimBim agony auntIf you do opt for a glass of wine or something else alcoholic keep to the one glass and drink a few glasses of water afterwards. Good luck and have fun!

CindyCares agony aunt I second Daisy Daisy.

I think that ONE glass of Chardonnay would not harm you and would leave you fit for driving, but, since you are usually a non drinker and you don't particularly care about alchohol, why drinking and tempting the fate the one time that you are also supposed to drive ?

Order a Virgin Pina Colada ( ah delicious, I like it even better than the real one ) , a Virgin Margarita, a Virgin Bloody Mary, a Virgin anything actually.

Or if it HAS to be something with alcohol in it ( but why, there's nothing uncool or unsophisticated in not wanting to drink alcohol if you've got to drive ) then ask for a Bellini made with half a glass of Prosecco or other sparkling white wine and the rest ,all peach juice. Or, for a Coke with just a tiny little splash of rum.

Fruit juice, a lemonade or a cola; just because you are on a date you don't have to drink anything alcoholic if you don't want to. It would actually be a pretty good indicator of your date's personality, to see how he copes with your decision not to imbibe.

Well that's what I'm asking. What is weak so I'll be ok to drive? And we're probably going to sit and talk for at least a couple hours

A female reader, Daisy_Daisy United Kingdom +, writes (6 January 2014):

Daisy_Daisy agony auntYou could order a 'mocktail' - a non alcoholic cocktail. More exciting than a lemonade or equivalent without the risk of being under the influence when driving home. I wouldn't advise even one alcoholic drink, unless it's weak (eg white wine spritzer or light lager) right at the start of the evening, with some food, and you have a couple of hours for it to leave your system before you drive. You're not used to drinking, don't risk it.

A female reader, Lieutenant United Kingdom +, writes (6 January 2014):

How about you order something non-alcoholic e.g. a non-alcoholic cocktail like a virgin mary or a virgin mojito. Just ask the bartender or whoever is serving the drinks for a list of their non-alcoholic drinks.
