I'd like to get my hair " down there " waxed lol, but i'm too embarassed about a stranger seeing my private parts, and how much hair there is there lol. I'm also worried about it hurting. How can i feel more comfortable about having it done ?. Also, is it normal to have a lot of hair there ?. It looks really long lol. Thanks.

I know it feels embarrassing but the therapists is not going to be looking at your privates and judging you. She won't even be looking there, she'll be looking at the hair. And even if she does judge how you look down there, she's not going to say anything about it and it really isn't important. I've had bikini waxes and although it's not pain-free, neither is it unbearable. The problem for me comes afterwards. Two or three days later, I start to get horrible red lumps under my skin and ingrown hairs, sometimes up to 20 at the same time. It looks horrendous and feels even worse. This is despite exfoliating and using special (expensive) cream for this specific problem. For me it's not worth the pain and hassle, and it certainly doesn't look good having angry red welts all over my thighs.

So_Very_Confused agony auntoh btw the exfoliating and moisturizing should be done on a regular if not daily basis.. not just the week before... I was not clear on that... it's a regular maintainence thing...

I've never had mine done professionally. Trim it right down with scissors then use the hair removing cream to dissolve it all if you want the totally bare look. Be sure not to splash any of the stuff on your delicate areas. I think the cream makes for a smoother look than wax, which can traumatise the skin and leave red blotches. Either way, this look is high maintenance and only for special occasions I'd say. Also, it can itch when it grows back. Good luck.

Take a pain killer and learn to do it yourself if you have waxed your legs before you can do at least a bikini wax yourself. I've done that as I really dont want someone else to wax me and I think it's easy to do a thorough bikini wax and then just trim or shave anything left into a racing strip.

So_Very_Confused agony auntI get waxed down there and go totally bare and I'm nearly 52 so how embarrassing is that?

exfoliate and moisturize well at least a week before.

take ibuprofen about 2 hours in advance

the first time it will hurt.... but then the hair starts growing back finer and thinner and it gets easier... "assume the position" will take on new meaning. It will depend on how flexible you are

I've been waxed doggy style when I was 300 pounds, now it's just a matter of picking up my legs crossing the ankles and holding while she does her job.... we just chat away about other things... it's her job and she's professional....

no big deal and I love how great it feels when it's done

A female reader, anonymous, writes (27 January 2012):

Everyone is different, my friends and I have had experiences where it hurt SO much (maybe it was just the shock of the first time), I thought I was going to have to get the lady to stop. Honestly, considering the cost, the pain, the awkwardness of having to expose youself to a stranger, and the fact that you have to keep getting it done, it doesn't last forever, I would say its not worth the bother except for *special occassions* However, don't ever be embarrassed, its a pretty normal thing that millions of women get done everyday, and the ladies who provide the treatment do it everyday, it's not like they are going to be suddenly surprised by you.

I recently got waxed for the first time and was terrified! But it turned out to not be nearly as painful as I had first expected. Parts of it did hurt, but it was quick pain and faded quickly. If you do have a lot of hair, trim it shorter, that will help with the waxing too (not too too short though). And the person was very very professional. Remember, it will be a girl and they have their own private parts and see this regularly. I already want to go back and get mine done again!

Honeypie agony auntGetting waxed is not that bad, it only takes 10 min tops and you are done. Just make sure they use fresh wax, strips and that the place is clean, I would actually ask around (friends) if they can recommend someone.

A female reader, TasteofIndia United States +, writes (27 January 2012):

TasteofIndia agony auntHi sweet,

Getting waxes is awkward - the first time I went in and who was my waxer? This woman I knew from my CHURCH who had a son I was friends with. And then the son called during the wax and she said, "oh, that's (__her son, my friend__), would you answer my phone for me?" and I said, "oh no, I don't think that's a great id--" and she said, "no no, I need to talk to him, just answer the phone".

And that phone conversation was the most awkward thing ever. "Yeah, I've been doing all ri-- AHHHH!! -- alright, how have things been with -- GOOD LORD!!! -- how are things with you?"

So, make sure you don't know the waxer. That is lesson #1.

Getting waxed doesn't hurt nearly as much as you think it will. The waxing only hurts the instant it is actively being pulled off of you. But, the pain is gone as quickly as it lasts. I recommend taking a pain reliever about an hour beforehand - it definitely lessens any pain you may get. I know some of my girlfriends don't think it hurts at all - it depends on your pain tolerance, I guess. But it is sooo worth the weeks of comfort afterwards.

Any amount of hair is normal! Sounds like you don't trim, and most girls would have a lot of hair if they just let it go au naturel.

As for a stranger seeing your lady bits, remember that she sees ten customers a day, and she's been working as a waxer for a long time. Unless your lady bits are Day Glo and breathe fire, you are no different than any other girl she's waxed. To her, it's just her profession. And she's used to girls being self conscious. But, if you just remember that this is her JOB to look at tons of vaginas, you'll be fine.

Good luck and never fear! Compared with the pain of child birth, I'm sure most women would say they'd take 10,000 waxes. Be strong! Be vigilant! And you will be silky smooth and loving it.

person12345 agony auntIf it's long, just use scissors and cut/trim it. That's totally painless and embarrassment free.
