i am in the same position right now. i don't want to tell her because my dad is here too, and it's really embarrasing. i'm just going to get my mum alone a bit later, and tell her then. she's already got towels because she wanted to be ready for when i did start. i think you should do the same. i hope this has been useful!?

Hey dont worry about it.

When I started my period I kept it a secret for weeks because I was really embarresed and didnt know how to tell my mom.

So I surfed some sites and they all said he same thing; Dont Worry It Happened To Your Mom Too. So I finally plucked up the courage and when my mom was saying goodnight to me I just said like really casually "Oh mom by the way I think I got my period today." She was like "Oh thats great hunny I'll get you some pads when I go shopping tommorrow. Night sweetie."

And It's as simple as that! Your mom will understand. After all she had to tell her mum about her period back in the day!

Good Luck Hunny =]

Fiona xxx agony auntJust tell your mum. You should be reieved you got your period, and that you are not the last! In fact your mum will be expecting you to get your first period at some point.

It is just a milestone like any other that's all. One which she obviously had.

Welcome to womanhood!

There was another topic about this recently, so you cannot be unique.

A female reader, lovehate United Kingdom +, writes (10 May 2008):

lovehate agony auntFirstly, why would your sisters laugh? They went through the exact same thing and so does every girl! You should be proud of becoming a woman :) Not ashamed.

Anyway...why do your sisters have to know?

Too be honest i was exactly the same as you, i kept on thinking of ways to tell her. But she is the main person who would understand. So i say just do it. The longer you put it of the harder it will get.

Don't worry! All my love x

I also have two older sisters so I know how you feel completely! Starting your period happens to every girl at some point so its really nothing to be embarassed about.

Tell her when you're sisters arent there, she'll probably be expecting you to tell her soon anyway so it wont be a shock.

Good luck, dont be afriad!

A female reader, malvern United Kingdom +, writes (9 May 2008):

malvern agony auntAll you have to say to your mum is this, " Mum I think I've started" and she'll know what you mean and take it from there. You may just be busy doing something else while you say this so you don't have to look your mum straight in the eye. Don't worry about it, your mum will know exactly how you feel and will help you along. That's what mums are for.

A female reader, genie88 United Kingdom +, writes (9 May 2008):

hey,

i remember the day i got my first period and i had to phone my mum at work to tell her because i didn't know what to do. I felt ashamed and embarressed but my mum came home and she was proud and so happy.

Its a wonderful thing and time.

your older sisters must have started theirs by now. so trust me they wont make fun of you, infact they will be even more supportive than you think. and if they havent then they will and you will be there for them.

if you still dont have the confidence then write your mum a little letter saying " Mum, Ive started my periods" and leave it for her.

trust me she'll be more embarassed that you didn' feel you could go to her.

anyways ur a woman now! : ) So be proud and fearless.

welcome to womanhood!!!

A female reader, BigSis United Kingdom +, writes (9 May 2008):

BigSis agony auntYour mum is probably waiting for this day to come, Is she some kind of ogre or what? You have to tell her, and honestly darlin', there's nothing to be embarrassed about.

She'll be upset that you didn't tell her, and anyway, she's bound to find out soon enough.

It's not a taboo subject and it's something that every girl gets sooner or later.

Now you go to her and just come out with it, but do it when your sisters are not around, then you wont feel like they're going to take the mick.

Congratulations...you are now officially a young lady.

Good luck.

BigSis
