Sandman agony auntUnfortunately, the only way to prevent pregnancy 100% of the time is to not have sex.

I'm sure you've heard that statement before - but it's true. All birth control methods come with an inherent failure rate. Mostly due to human error (not using the method correctly such as forgetting to take the pill or putting the condom on wrong) but still a failure rate. And because of this, no form of birth control is 100% effective.

Therefore, to answer your question, if you are afraid of pregnancy, the only way to prevent that from happening 100% of the time is to not have sex.

Hope this helps.

k_c100 agony auntWell I'm sure when you had sex before you still could have gotten pregnant - what did you use last time to prevent pregnancy!

Basically in order for there to be no chance of you getting pregnant you need to be taking birth control and using a condom. So make an appointment to see your doctor and they will discuss the birth control options with you - the pill or the injection are the 2 easiest options. This will mean your body does not release an egg each month therefore there is no egg for the sperm to fertilise. As for the condoms, well your doctor can give you some of those for free. They catch all the ejaculate in the end of the condom so that none goes inside you - and they also prevent STD's too.

I hope this helps!

A female reader, kittykhaos United Kingdom +, writes (23 August 2009):

kittykhaos agony auntThere are many forms of contraceptive, condoms are probably the most all round as they protect you from sti's as well as unwanted babies:P but there is also the pill. You may need to try a few before you find the right one for you. There is also a coil which if you don't want to take something that changes your hormones(or like me you suck at remembering to take your pill) is pretty effective (all though you can now get a hormone based one too)Also in the uk you can get something called an implant (im not sure about USA) its a small tube with a time release that slowly releases hormones into your blood stream. You dont have to remember to take anything and they last about 2 years, I think if you are asking such a basic question at your age i would get yourself on line and try and give your self a bit of a sex education. Also it looks like you have lived with the misconception that you can't get pregnant the first time round the answer is YOU CAN! Please do your research and try and clue yourself up before you start having a sexual relationship. Good luck and take it at your own pace :)

A male reader, Sphronas United States +, writes (23 August 2009):

Sphronas agony auntCondoms are the obvious answer, and they have the additional advantage that they will protect you from sexually transmitted diseases. Once you are in a firmly committed, exclusive relationship, you might consider going on the pill, but this is something you should discuss with your doctor.
