Hi There!

I don't know quite how to explain this! But within the last hour, for at least 10 minutes I started feeling weak; I was trembling, my legs felt like jelly, my head feeling really heavy and I felt as though I was going to faint! I'm still a bit shaky, I dunno what it is? Also I've been very stressed lately, could this be linked to that awful sensation I've just experienced? And just to let you know, I'm 15 years old.

I know this post is old, but for anyone who types these symptoms into google and gets this page LISTEN UP! This girl was obviously eating sugar, so low blood sugar WASNT the problem here.. the problem is that there was NO PROTEIN. I speak from personal experience, because while doing a body detox I began to feel very weak, dizzy, and disoriented.... that is until i had some protein! eat some meat, nuts or seeds! And you'll feel better within 20 minutes. All carbs and sugars, and no protein makes jill a dull girl.

Emaz help agony auntSlowly start eating more and more, if you don't then you will most probably faint or lose a lot of weight too quickly!

I know it's hard, i have a problem with fruit and vegetables, i have to force myself to eat them but after one bite then im sick, i don't know why though!

So as you can tell, im very unhealthy

I faint a lot too but to stop this i eat a lot in the morning, it works!

Anyway, if you really want to loose weight then loose it slowly.

You're like me with the modelling! lol

Although i have to disagree with 'basschick' as u do need to eat sugar to stop yourself fainting! (im doing this in health and social care atm)

A female reader, Basschick Australia +, writes (27 September 2007):

Basschick agony auntI think you are definately somewhat hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) and because you are trying to diet, your body is fighting you. The worse thing you can do is cut your caloric intake in order to lose weight. People with this disorder simply cannot just nibble on one little biscuit all day and feel okay and you are going to continue feeling like shit, and having these horrible symptoms until you begin to eat right. You don't have the luxury of eating like a model, and surviving on a celery stick for hours. Go on the internet and learn what you can about low blood sugars and hypoglycemia. Your body is telling you it needs more protein and eating a biscuit and then going for hours with nothing else is a sure way to give yourself a headache and the shakes. If you are hell bent on losing 2 dress sizes, join Nutrisystems and eat their porportionally sized meals, which are nutrionally balances to keep your blood sugar levels even, while still cutting back on your calories. Otherwise you're going to end up in the hospital. People have been known to go into a coma or have serious heart malfunctions when they rob their bodies of needed nutrients. Please don't do that anymore. And here's the thing about hypoglyciema. When your sugars get that low, you will actually NOT feel hungry. You will feel clamy, and look gray, and feel shaky and horribly nauseous and the last thing you want is food. Unfortunately, it's the thing you need the most. Force yourself to eat a little more each day and you'll see a difference in how you feel. I suggest a dietian can counsel with you about your issues on food and help you structure a plan that'll help keep your weight down, while feeding this disorder. Good luck.

Hiya guys, just a little update.

I don't think it was a panic attack or anything - I'm sure it is to do with my diet! I've been completely avoiding crisps and chocolate - which in a way i think is needed since it will boost up my blood sugar levels. However, i think i'm going downhill - it is now 4:00pm and all i've eaten today is half a digestive biscuit with a cuppa tea and half of a banana. I think i'm taking this diet a bit too seriously and i'm scared it develops into an eating disorder. This has only been goin on for about 2 days and already i'm feeling the effects - i keep getting pains in my stomach and a constant headache. Food has suddenly become my enemy, i know i should eat more - and the bit i do eat, i ensure is healthy! However i'm just concerned of my own health - i wanna stop this before it turns into something serious, and i really would like to avoid seeing a doctor if that's possible :S

Anything will be appreciated, thank you xx

My daughter has been going through the very same thing as you (she is 12). She is in bed with her body feeling heavy and weak and her head hurts. It started off as a pain in her belly, but now it has gone to her whole body. Did you ever figure out what was causing yours?? We are expecting blood results this morning. Let us know how you are doing.

A reader, anonymous, writes (27 September 2007):

It is a panic attack, I have had this many times. Sometimes it is paralysing and you think you are going to die. The diet advice is good. But the other problem is that you are breathing wrongly through anxiety. Panic attacks happen because the oxygen saturation in the blood gets too high. You may find that your shoulders ache because you are breathing short using mainly your upper chest. You can try slowly tking in breath using your low stomach first and exhale slowly. Or you can keep a paper bag with you, scrunch the opening down, put it over your mouth breathe out into it and suck the same air back as a breath. Do this a few times and the carbdon dioxide in that breath will help to readjust the balance in your body. Have a good read about panic attacks on line.

howcomehoney agony auntI'm a model. You can be a size ten. Size twelve, even. The way you interact with the camera is more important than the size of your ass - they can always Photoshop that away. And the way you interact with the camera is all to do with the way you feel, and if you're starving and shivering, you look terrible. Eat healthily and be confident. You can't be confident if you're always counting calories and skipping meals.

A female reader, Basschick Australia +, writes (26 September 2007):

Basschick agony auntNo, do not eat any more sugar it's the worst thing for you. For one thing, it packs on the pounds and that's obviously what you're trying to avoid doing. Also, just because you are having symptoms of "low blood sugar" eating more sugar is not going to fix the problem. It means your body processes sugar differently than most. You're sensitive to it. When you're shaky or weak, your body may crave something sweet for instant energy. Big mistake. Reach for a piece of cheese, a few wheat crackers or like I said earlier, a small breakfast bar that's low in sugar. I personally like the South Beach bars because they contain only 7 grams of sugar and about 14 grams of protein and only 140 calories. This will keep your blood sugars level so you won't feel shaky or woozy-headed. The best thing you can do is snack all day long, just don't snack on fattening things (like potato chips) or fried foods. Think celery sticks, carrot sticks, cucumber slices, apple slices, low-fat peanut butter, low-fat cheeses, calorie-friendly breakfast bars, or a handful of almonds and be sure you don't skip meals entirely, just keep your portions small because if you eat big meals, you'll overload your system and feel worse in the long run. You may also have to add more protein if you're working out (like eat a small lean steak for lunch instead of just a salad) because you're going to need the energy if you're cutting calories otherwise. I find that if I eat a sugary cereal for breakfast, it burns through me in an hour and I'm starving way before lunch! Same thing happens if I eat a candy bar in the middle of the afternoon (yes, sometimes even I am "bad" with my diet) I will be more hungry in an hour. There's something about sugar that makes you want to eat more, so that's always bad if you're trying to watch your weight. But to be safe, I think you should check with your physician and make sure there's nothing else going on with your health that we non-experts might not know. Nothing can beat a good physical, and your physician can give you some dietary guidelines that will suit your age. Good luck.

O Connor agony aunthoney you are only 15 and already starting down a rocky road. a size 10 is a beautiful size to be at 15 and its unhealthy to be overly concious about your figure. just remember that eating 3 meals a day is wat you need and instead of sugary snacks you should eat fruit, nuts or seed and drink plenty of water! as long as you are eating properly you will be fine but please dont try anything extreme! if you want more advise on healthy, nutritional diets that will help you then email me hun, in the meantime just make sure you are eating!! another thing you may wanna check out is that your not anaemic? go to a doctor just to be sure, your symptoms could be signs of this - but dont worry its not at all serious! good luck with the modelling! xxx

Thanx for thee advice ppl.

I fink it actually makes me feel alot better when i eat something. Not that i have been skipping meals or anything, just dat i'm a little paranoid about my figure - since i'm trying to get down from a size 10 to an 8 so i'll qualify as a model, which i'm hoping to start next year! I try to avoid big portions of food, but i still do eat a few sugary snacks. Am i not eating enough sugar? I feel that i am, and don't really want to eat anymore than i am doing cos i wanna stay healthy and eat the right stuff!

A female reader, Basschick Australia +, writes (26 September 2007):

Basschick agony auntIt could be a number of things, but it sounds like you may have low blood sugar. Think about your eating habits and do some research, or go visit your doctor and he can run a simple fasting blood test on you to determine if you could be hypoglycemic. If so you'll need to learn how to eat more often during the day, eat smaller meals, eat less carbs and be sure to keep a protein snack handy, like a small breakfast bar for times when you feel shaky and weak. It's fairly easily controlled if you listen to your body and eat better. I was diagnosed in my early 20's so I am all too familiar with the shaky-weakness that accompanies this disorder. Skipping meals is an absolute no-no, and so is eating donuts or loading up on other refined sugars when you're starving. You may feel better at first, (for like, 20 min.) but when your sugars do a nose-dive, you'll feel like death warmed over. I hope this helps you out.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (26 September 2007):

Definitely low blood sugar or panic attack. I've had both so I know. Eat regularly, avoid skipping meals and eating too much refined carbohidrates, eat proteins, like yogurts, cheeses, nuts, beef, chicken, peanut butter, etc. have your blood sugar levels checked as soon as you can (this is no joke) and look for relaxing techniques to help you cope with stress. If attacks continue you should go to your doctor and he/she will prescribe effective medication.
