Skellington agony auntSorta what AngelX said. Goth kicked in for me around 14-15 and I've been like that since.

And no, it's not a phase, it's a way of life if you believe all of us. Black metal is more of just what you prefer, but I have noticed, that my tastes have changed over the years. When I first started listening to alternative music, it started out light like Linkin Park and stuff like that. Then it got heavier; Mudvayne, Korn, Adema. Then heavier: Metallica, Slayer, Cradle of Filth. Then foreign(!): Soilwork, IN FLAMES, Amon Amarth, Asrai. Really, it's all just in taste. : )

XxAnGelXxx agony auntScrew what other people think. For me, the 'goth stage' kicked in when I was just 13, ever since, it's been a way of life :)

vamp-gal agony auntHey, yeah, two months along, I know, but ah well, think I should reply. Anyway the others are right, it's a type of music, who cares what anyone else thinks, if you enjoy it, then that's that!

I'm kind of the opposite, I like the clothing, and my music taste ranges from High School Musical (yeah...) to My Chemical Romance. Some people call me weird, but I embrace that lol. I'm a cross between gothicy and girly. You never know, it may not even be a phase, and thats nothing to worry or be ashamed or anything, it's who you are, and you should NEVER change who you are to make someone else happy (in this case apparently your family). I get this from my sister, she calls me emo and everything, I ignore her, because I'm not changing because of some stupid words that have come out of her mouth that are supposed to offend me, I will not change for anyone and neither should you! Devil worshiper is another thing many people get called, it can be hurtful, but they don't know YOU just what you like, there is a BIG difference. You should definatly go out and try to meet people who share the same interests as you, you may find they've gone through the same thing, and it will be easier to talk to them about it, and you'll have friends who know you for you, not just what your music says. It's like that saying 'Never judge a book by its cover' it's like that now, just enjoy being who you are, if people don't like it then that's there problem, but don't make it yours.

Hope this helps. And sorry it's so long.

saltwater agony auntDon't worry about it.

I've been through so many musical phases it's untrue. I'm currently going through a vocal trance period.

But whether yours is a phase or something you enjoy until the day you die; so what?

It's only music. Jamer is right. Find musical groups who share your interest in the same music.

As someone who is interested in sound and music though, do take care of your ears. If you do use headphones make sure the volume isn't too loud -- death metal is notorious for causing hearing problems if listened to at high volume over an extended period of time.

Other than that...listen away!

A female reader, Emilysanswers United Kingdom +, writes (16 September 2008):

You like a certain type of music! Big deal.

It doesn't have anything to do with boys you like or your family. It's only music.

People seem to think that if you like certain music then you should dress a certain way and be into other similar things. That's just stupid!

That is like saying that if you like spaghetti you should live like an Italian.

If the boys you have been with hate gothic people then they are narrow minded jerks.

It's just music. Enjoy it and chill out. You can always put your headphones on if your parents don't like it.

Good Luck!! xx

Jamer70 agony auntDont hate the person you are

You like death metal and thats who you are, people have these "musical" sterotypes i.e Metalheads worship the devil, kids who listen to emo music cut themselve, grime is crime etc

If you like your music dont let anyone let you feel bad about it. Why dont you try and find groups/clubs who like similar music to you
