A male reader, WastedLife United States +, writes (7 May 2008):

PLEASE FOLKS, listen carefully and NEVER DECLAW A CAT! There are plenty of ways to prevent scratches, the most obvious one is to wear a pair of welding gloves - heavy leather that goes up your arms. Declawing is more than removing the cat's fingernails, it is actually removing the first segment of every digit. It is major surgery and is illegal in many jurisdictions. The cat will always have sensitive paws, and can't run properly, nor defend itself, nor run up a tree to get away from dogs and other predators. I picked up a very loving stray that had been declawed and abandoned and she was starving, since she could not hunt, run or climb. I had to keep her inside for the rest of her life, for her own protection. It's very painful for the cat too, even with anesthesia. Even a declawed cat will scratch if you let it, since a prime play modality for cats is to grab with front paws and teeth, then kick and scratch with rear paws. Declawed cats get very effective with their teeth as a compensation. The only proper solution is to learn to sense the mood of the cat, and play into the gentle mood of the cat. If you can't do that, leave the at alone - let it come to you, and don't go near if it is on it's side or back.

I hope that helps. Cats matter, just like people.

- just declaw the cat= at the vet! people are concerned about you and it is not healthy to keep getting hurt that way as you could end up getting the cuts infected etc.

BigSis agony auntMy darling, it's simple...take those people home with you and let the cats loose on them, they might believe you then.

Uncle Phil, You is bad, I'm not a cat lover at all, but that's just evil, may the fleas of a thousand felines seek revenge upon you.

softballplaya agony auntokay hun heres what to do

tell them that you dont self harm, say its cat claw marks. honesty works the best i believe. ignore them, they are immature kids who want to bring others down so they feel better about their selves thats all. Let them know that they are immature for thinking your emo, tell them to worry about themselves. If they dont believe you when you try to explain the truth then forget them!

good luck && take care

hope i helped=]

Um... Im not sure but I would think that bringing the cat to the vet to have it de-clawed would be more appropriate than pulling them out with a pair of pliers... I'm no genius but I would assume that it would greatly hurt the cat... You could however just wear the leather gauntlets while playing with the cat.

A reader, anonymous, writes (28 April 2008):

If you get a pair of your dad's pliers from his toolbox, and a pair of leather gauntlets from the garden shed you can, without any discomfort to yourself, tear the cat's claws out so that it can't do you any more damage, and you won't have any more new cuts on your arms.

juliaross agony auntOkay, for one. tell them they're absolutely ridiculous for thinking that about you. I don't know you so i don't know if you're a happy person. but speak logical. tell them that if you were going to harm yourself, which you wouldn't (i hope!) that you wouldn't do it where people would see it. Or maybe if you have the money, get your cats de-clawed for future problems.
