A female reader, anonymous, writes (15 February 2011):

I'm 23 y.o. and have never met anyone who could "tell" I was menstruating (unless I told them myself.)

No one has noticed a correlation between menstruating and my behavior, voice, or appearance. The only thing that tips my boyfriend off is the fact I'll be wearing pads or panty liners, and he wouldn't know that unless he puts his hand down my pants. (Also, well, he can tell by the smell of the irony discharge, but that's only we're in a hotel room being sexual and he happens to have his nose down there. But then again, by that time I've already told him I'm on my cycle.)

However, I have some female friends who do seem more emotional/expressive due to hormone levels (like they'll get teared up over something they usually wouldn't), so maybe you did sound different. But unless you were crying or sounded distraught, I'm not sure how your boyfriend could "tell". Interesting.

Contrary to the popular belief that men are emotionally inept/blind to female behaviour, we are in fact clued in. It's usually obvious when a woman is on her period.

A male reader, Odds United States +, writes (7 February 2011):

Odds agony auntIf it was your behavior, he probably wouldn't say it was - he would lie and claim it was something else. I've never heard of voice changes during periods.

Still, there are other signs he may have caught on to. If you normally wear shorts or skirts, the change to pants would be a giveaway. Or moodiness, as mentioned. Or maybe he noticed you were ovulating two weeks ago - girls tend to show more skin and be more feisty/horny during that time, and it can be useful to track your girlfriend's cycle. He could just be checking. If you're on the pill, it's easy to keep tabs on.

if he said it wasnt because you were acting modody i could be he saw wrappers of pads or tampons? you forgot to flush the toliet? :)

there is many things that could be why or how he knows this. hes just being observant, hes just messing with you! dont talking it anymore than that. hes having fun.
