Just my grain of sand. Names that are actually very common in other countries or languages will sound "unique" in New Zealand. Example: "Antonio". Very common name in Spanish - Portuguese - Italian but not so common in the English-speaking world, I believe.

Antonius is nice. I know this one isn't an A or S, but I really like it. Khalil. Ira pronounced KAH-LIL

OK, throw that kind of question out to the WORLD and get some names that might be really unusual for New Zealand. I lived in Australia and had a roomie named Warren. Folks their found it really odd that anyone's parents would name their child after a hole in the ground where rabbits lived! (Rabbits are extremely loathed there).
I agree that you need to give the child a name that he can live with. Here in the US we have people making up all kinds of names. Many are far too ethic. The sister-in law of a friend of mine told me a story about asking one of her students parents how they picked the child's name. They told her they saw it at the Dr's office and liked it. The kids name was Urine. Pronounced incorrectly, but it still spells PISS.
Think about what the kid is going to go through, at 5, 10, 18, 35... cute is not necessarily a good idea.

First, congrats on the new arrival. But please keep in mind that this baby boy will one day be a grown man, and if you give him a 'sweet and unique' name it may be one which causes teasing in childhood and may alienate conservative prospective employers when they read it on his CV/Resume. He may not want to be a rock star or actor when he grows up. David Bowie's son Zowie changed his name, after all...
