A female reader, anonymous, writes (24 September 2010):

Hey, I'd advise you to speak to your parents or your GP/out of hours GP asap. Symptoms like this can be a result of drug use, but can also occur in illnesses like schizphrenia, so I'd say it's important to get some advice from a doctor. If you can persuade your brother to go to the doctor with you, that would be ideal. If he won't go with you, you could make an appointment, go yourself and explain your worries about your brother so that they can help. Hope that helps.

TasteofIndia agony auntWell, if you are worried and you feel like your brother isn't acting like himself then you should talk to your parents or a school counselor. He may be just messing around with you, or over exaggerating, or he might have something going on mentally that needs to be addressed now.

It is very sweet and smart of you to notice and be concerned. I'd talk to a parent or a counselor, that is probably how you can help best. That, and continuing to be a loving sister to your brother.

Good luck!

Cerberus_Raphael agony auntSuch paranoia CAN be a sign of skitzophrenia or any number of alternative psychological disorders but I am not a professional psychiatrist. I suggest you seek professional help for your brother.

I hope that helps.

A male reader, dirtball United States +, writes (24 September 2010):

dirtball agony auntWell, the first thing you need to analyze is if there is truth in what he's saying. If this seems more like extreme paranoia, then you need to get him to a psychologist. Extreme paranoia is often the a symptom of a couple of different disorders. Schizophrenia and Bipolar are two of the disorders that often have paranoid delusions as part of their symptomology.

These people that are talking to him, are they real people? I know that in some cities in the UK there are actually cameras all over the city, do you live in one of those cities?

Basically, the degree of his fear plays an important factor in if he is ill or not. Extreme fear of the completely irrational is the signature of a paranoid schizophrenic.

Please let me know if you would like me to clarify anything here as I used quite a bit of terminology.
