Contraception Question - I want to put my periods on hold

A female United Kingdom age 30-35, *bonyBlossom writes:

I've been on the Cilest pill for over a year now. So far it has been effective, has made my periods lighter and more comfortable and has improved my complexion.

However, I'm going to uni to study dance in september. I'll be moving about a lot, and getting changed in front of other girls. Wearing tight clothing a lot of the time as well. I want to go swimming more to improve my fitness, upper body strength for uni and my breath because I sing too. My boyfriend has a tiring job and I'll be tired a lot of the time so we're gonna have less opportunity to do the things couples like to do. So it would be an advantage to stop my periods.

I heard that the contraceptive injection stops periods so I looked it up. I read that about 7/10 women's periods stop after a few months, but other women have irregular, longer and more uncomfortable periods on the injection. I also heard fertility can be delayed for a while after coming off the injection.

Is there any other form of contraception that will put my periods on hold?

The first month i took Yasmin (pill) i bled uncontrollably. Afterwards, everything was fine and i had regular, lighter periods and no breakthrough bleeding.

My gyno said it was ok to use the med to stop my periods for up to 3 months consecutively.

If you aren't able to put your periods on hold, or if you spot after starting a new treatment there are feminine hygine products called menstrual cups which are worn internally and catch the flow. There is no external string or other obvious outward sign that you are menstrating.

I would recommend talking to a board certified and well respected gynocologist. He or she can provide you with medical advice and recommend the best course of action as well as discuss with you the pros/cons of the many contraceptive treatments available to you.

Hi,

I would be very vary of messing with mother nature and trying to put your periods on hold. The Pharmacuticle co's dont tell you of the side effects off all these chemicals in yr body & the long term damage they cause...could cause damange to you/ yr future kids.

Remember no drug is 100% without side effects

LilPixie agony auntThere are some pills that can stop your period completely. I was on one called Cerazette for 4 months but didn't like it. My periods didn't completely stop but were very irregular. You should talk to your doctor about it and explain your situation. He/She will be able to advice you what may be best for you.

Hello :) where contraception is concerned I would highly suggest the marena coil, I had NO periods for 3yrs then had it removed as we were trying for a baby. But once it's in you don't need to worry about it for 5yrs.

And in all honesty u think whoever came up with that injection statistic is talking out their B-hind!! I tried it and bled everyday for 8months! Everyone else I know who's tried it also bled constantly, it's not loads but more like spotting and it ruined my sex drive and everyone elses I kno. I've heard mixed reviews on the implant, that could also be worth considering.

As for the reason you want your periods to stop, the sex I understand where your coming from, but the dancing and been self consious around other girls I don't understand.. They will all be having their periods too! It isn't anything to be worried about, you could even try asking them how they cope when their on. Don't worry about it hun.

Hope I helped :) take care, JD.

GSDfan agony auntWell here in Australia you can get some forms of the pill that stop ur period completely until u want to have it i think. not sure cos i have never tried it but i know with the one i was you could do it with that one too. but then again not sure how effective it would be, whereas this injection sounds like it will definately work.

Good Luck
