Go take a pregnancy test and hope your life isn't ruined.

You need to be tested for STDs now. Hopefully you haven't contracted herpes or genital warts.

A reader, anonymous, writes (19 December 2010):

You lost your virginity to a guy you weren't dating?

And then you ask, can having unprotected sex lead to a STD's, let alone pregnancy..YES of course, IF you don't know that, haven't listened to all the ' sex education talks' then you are NOT ready or mature enough to be sexually active.

This has nothing to do with a lack of sex education in schools, this is down irresponsibility. Where have you been, obviously not in sex education classes. Seriously, there is no excuse these days not to take precautions, just none at all unless you are really don't have an IQ larger than your shoe size.

Yep..shooting from the hip, as this attitude of random sex without being in a relationship, and no protection is just not a good combination at any age.

It is very possible you could have caught an STD.

I would look up the symptoms and check for them. You could also go to your doctor to check, as some STDs have no symptoms.

Next time make sure he wears a condom if its someone you dont know, and have no clue of their sexual history.

You can also get pregnant if you are not using any other form of protection.

I hope you learn a lesson from this !

A male reader, anonymous, writes (19 December 2010):

You're an unfortunate example of parents and an education system which has failed you. Unless you're as dumb as a box of nails you can research all this stuff on the Internet. Next time do only after thinking first.

What you've done is essentially expose yourself to a probably huge number of people and thus increased your exposure to the likelihood of a STD. And mores for women as research would suggest, you may have been exposed to HPV. Search it and look it up, it has been linked to cancer in women.

For your sake I hope you're just playing around and simply not this far gone in lacking basic survival intelligence/skills.

marcia99116 agony auntAt 16-17 you should know the answer to this question... what is sex ed coming too these days?!?!

Yes you can get an STD by having sex vaginally or oral (that was a shock to me at your age, the oral). Their are clinics that do full checks (usually ran by state run hospitals). They are supposed to be anonymous and I am not sure how old you have to be to get a check done but they usually cost 10-110.

If your parents do not know and you do not want them to find out:

If you need an excuse to see your doctor tell your mom that your school would like you to get a physical. And when you are there and she is not in the room tell them you have had unprotected sex and you would like to get a full check of your blood and a pap smear.

You can call your doctors office and ask for the any available nurse or the nurse of your doctor (make sure they know you need to talk to a person and not voice mail) if they ask for your name tell them you are a patient and would like to ask a confidential question and would rather not disclose your name. Once you have the nurse on the line ask her about their medical disclosure policies between people your age and their parents. If you would rather your parents not find out what tests the doctor is doing then ask her how you can get tested without the consent or disclosure to your parents.

Also ask for an HPV shot - it will not protect you from all the strands (13) but it protects from the most common. 4 out of 5 women have a strand by age 25. IF you get HPV, some strands can have devastating consequences if you do not get treatment.

A male reader, CaringGuy United Kingdom +, writes (19 December 2010):

Of course you could! That's the reason condoms exist. They exist so there is LESS chance of you catching something.

You should go to the doctor and get checked for STD's. Also, if you weren't on the pill, watch out for symptoms of pregnancy.

Also, please before you have sex again do some research. I'm not sure you're totally ready to be having sex. Whilst it offers a lot of pleasure, it can bring a huge amount of unhappiness if you don't know what you're getting into!

Remember:

- No form of contraception can protect 100% against STD's and pregnancy. But, used correctly, the pill offers the best protection against pregnancy, whilst condoms offer the better protection against STD's. Use both together.

- Guys will lie and not tell. You now know that too. Not all guys will do this, but there are some grotty, God awful men out there who will happily use no protection, but not tell you that they've been around. Your safety depends on you being smart enough to use protection.

Get to the doctor and get checked. And please be careful in the future.

fi_the_tree agony auntGreat, another person who fell asleep during sex ed classes in school...

YES, you could potentially get an STI from having unprotected sex, and you could also get pregnant! But this doesn't necessarily mean that you have one either. Go to a clinic and get yourself tested, it can be done in confidence so noone has to know.

Next time you're intimate with a man, tell him these words...

"Safe sex, or no sex" you cant put yourself through that sort of risk, STI's can ruin lives... Do some research on what STI's are out there aswell, the more clued up you are, the safer you will be.
