@ ivan and mishmash - love your answers! have given me a giggle on this miserable looking monday morning! - mishmash, your mum sounds like mine!
be careful if letting a store measure you - it all depends on how competent the member of staff is - the only time in her life that my mum got measured for a bra was at marks and spencer and it is the worst fitting bra she has ever bought. she cannot even wear it actually so it just sits like a complete waste of money in her drawer. i like to actually try different bras on, depending on the style of them and what shop it is can make a difference i think. the perfect bra gives support and a nice shape, without any spilling out or gaping spaces and it should be very comfortable obviously. have a look on Bravissimo site they give some great advice about how a bra should feel, fit and look, they actually say don't use a tape measure!

It really depends where you go..
Most people say to measure your bust then add 4 inches. But that would make me 42inches!! Which is HUGE! I find that I 36/38 fits perfectly.
Also shop around to see what stores bras fit you the best.
For example..I have tried on about every type and size of bra in Lasenza, M&S, Debenhams etc..
But the only bras that fit me properly at the moment are in Asda!
The straps should fit comfortably, not tight, not loose and your breasts should be in the bra with no gap when you lean over and not spilling out of the cup.

Go to your nearest Marks and Spencers lingerie section and ask one of the staff there to measure you. Wear the most comfortable bra that you have when you go.
All the fitters are female, and you leave your bra on when getting measure, so there's no pressure.
It's very important to go and get yourself measured properly, but also remember that different shops do actually have different sizes, for example you could be measured as 36C in Marks and Spencer, but buy a 34D in topshop, always make sure you try bras on before buying, i've made that mistake before, and i've not been able to return them either...

when you go to choose a bra in a good quality place the trained fitters will measure you for size and cup size. Take a trip to one of the bigger stores with trained fitters and they will do it for you.
circumference alone does not tell the whole story. A woman could be a size 8 in clothing but have a big cup size. And a woman could be a size 14 and yet be flat
chested and have a small cup size. So you need a good fitter.
Due to poorly fitting bras (which do not do much for you) it is estimated that a huge percentage of women wear the wrong size or wrong cup.
If the boobs are hanging out like a crowd leaning a balcony she wearing the wrong size.
If the boobs are bouncing like a hopping bunny as she walks she is wearing the wrong size bra.
Please get properly fitted, you will feel so comfortable and your clothing will look better

A bra store will measure you for free. But basically you measure under your breasts for the band size. Say you measure 32 inches around for example. Add 4 inches.
30 + 4 = 34 (bras come in even sizes so round up odd no's)
Next you measure over the fullest part of your breasts . Say this measurement is 36.
Subtract:
36 - 34 = 2 inch difference this is your cup size (B)
so you would need a size 34 B bra.
1 inch = A
2 inch = B
3 inch = C
4 inch = D

The best way is to get fitted at a store :)The perfect bra size usually means that the back doesn't ride up, straps don't dig into your shoulders and your boobs aren't spilling out of the cups.
