Are women put off by skinny men?

I know everyone has different tastes and personal preferences, but in general, are women put off by skinny men?

I'm 23, and while I eat like a horse, I just have never been able to put on any tangible weight, and have virtually little muscle and hardly any definition on my arms or legs.

Like I say, I know everyone has different tastes, but in general do women find skinny guys off putting?

A female reader, anonymous, writes (16 August 2012):

I find skinny men unattractive, strictly speaking, though I wouldn't mind dating one if he were very nice otherwise. I prefer bulkier ones though. Even slightly fat is acceptable.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (15 August 2012):

I find very skinny men unnattractive because they appear unhealthy. Girls want to feel like they're protected, and not that they need to protect their man. Eating a lot and remaining skinny is one thing though. Working out is another thing. It's a good idea to work out to look fit and strong despite being thin.

A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (15 August 2012):

chigirl agony auntI've seen skinny off putting men. I'm currently in a relationship with a skinny smoking hot man. Skinny is just a body type, it's how you carry yourself and who you are that matters. Body language is what determines if someone is sexy or not. Besides, muscles are better defined in the slimmer men, you see it very easily when they are flexed, and you feel them so well since there's not that much fat covering them. Yum.

Then again I've seen skinny men who just felt like bones and many of them are tall and bend over (in a failed attempt to appear shorter), they wear clothes that don't fit and their body language just screams "I dislike my body". That's not hot. But the body type in itself isn't an issue.

Take pride in yourself no matter your body type, and like SVC said: be confident. And remember that different girls like different guys, there's someone out there for every taste.

Stayc63088 agony auntI've always prefered skinny men. Never liked bulky men or men with muscles. My sister is the same way. I assume it's the same for women asking men if they like a woman with curves or a thin body type, all in personal preference.

So_Very_Confused agony auntChigirl made me think about this.... (doesn't she always)

we are not put OFF by skinny men although we may not find them the MOST attractive.

what's off putting is the attitude and self-esteem issues.

I'm going to scream this:

THERE IS NOTHING AS SEXY AS A CONFIDENT MAN

TheHelper96 agony auntthese comments have made me feel alot better about myself and hope the original poster. Im a thin 16 year old guy and i always worry that women find us a turn off because the stereotype is that women like big manly men with muscle.

person12345 agony auntMy current boyfriend is very skinny. I admit I wish he would even just put on some weight, but it wasn't something I noticed before we started dating and isn't a factor in much of anything. The only reason I care is that I think it's causing him to get sick more often.

Have you ever heard of David Tennant? He's a little string bean and he gets passed around as sexiest man on the planet (by the UK) pretty frequently.

Sageoldguy1465 agony auntWhen I was your age, I was skinny and scrawny, and had girls ALL OVER ME. The secret?? ... well... I can't tell you here - in public.... but it's something that's available to EVERY young man....

Good luck....

A female reader, So_Very_Confused United States +, writes (15 August 2012):

So_Very_Confused agony auntI find very skinny men unattractive I'll be honest.

My current partner when we met was much thinner than he is now. He also preferred to shave his body hair and I found him to look prepubescent.

Once he switched to trimmed vs shaved and he picked up a bit of weight he doesn't look so boyish any more to me.

It didn't' mean I didn't date him.. and it didn't mean I didn't get involved... and I would have stayed even if he was too skinny... it's about the insides... but if given a choice... I prefer a man with a bit of meat on his bones...

A male reader, DoubleM United States +, writes (15 August 2012):

DoubleM agony auntWell I'm a man, not a woman, but I certainly think that being a bit thin is much better than being fat. Maybe it could matter if extremely skinny. I'm much older, fairly normal-to-thin, yet even young women tell me that I look great in terms of size. My problem is also being short. lol

A female reader, maverick494 United States +, writes (15 August 2012):

I think it's better to be skinny than fat. Lots of guys your age are lanky and I don't think it's off putting at all. It sure wouldn't stop me from dating one if I liked him.

If you're really bothered by it, eat more protein and work out a little (and by that I mean push ups and lifting weights rather than running and rowing). That might help you put on some bulk and size.

Still, I know that it's very hard for a guy with the metabolism of a F1 car to put on any kind of weight, so don't feel bad if you don't see progress quickly. If you're healthy, I wouldn't worry about it. Like they say: don't fix it when it's not broken.

A male reader, grymsoul United States +, writes (15 August 2012):

grymsoul agony auntThere's no such thing as "eating like a horse and not putting on weight". I know this because I use to be you seven months ago. A 23 year old, 165 pound male. Now I'm 189 pounds. I've been on a bulking diet and weight training for the last seven months.

A very seasoned gym trainer told me there is no such thing as not being able to gain weight. You just have to find out what your body uses to maintain it's weight everyday, and push it a few hundred calories beyond. You'll gain weight wether you want to or not by doing this method. If you normally eat 2500 cals, push it to 2800 everyday. Trust me, you'll gain weight. It's all about eating more than your body can digest quickly.

As for girls liking skinny guys? Yea, they're out there. I've managed to snag beautiful women being as skinny as I use to be. They didn't seem to have a problem with it. I'm weight training for me because I'm tired of looking into the mirror and seeing a skinny, frail looking dude staring back.
