Any fans of Harry Potter?

A female Mexico age 41-50, *irenaBlusera writes:

One of the questions that I answered on Dear Cupid just sparked my curiousity.

I was wondering if any of the other aunts and uncles are fans of the Harry Potter series?

Not everyone is a fan of course, but please humor me, because I'm curious. I am nearly finished with the last book and now I'm wondering:

What house at Hogwarts (the wizarding school) suits you best? Where do you think the sorting hat would send you?

It sent me to Slytherin (usually, although on one site, their personality test said I belong in Gryffindor)

For those that don't know, Slytherin has a sinister reputation, and most of the bad guys came from Slytherin.

Gryffindor is supposed to represent courage, and chivalry but not all Gryffindors are good, however.

SirenaBlusera agony auntI don't think that Snape was bad, but conflicted.

I've read the stories and I'm still not sure why he would want to become a Death Eater. I think Snape was a fundamentally good person with enough sense to realize that the Death Eaters were evil. Most people serve the "Dark Lord," as they call him, out of a hunger for power, or out of fear (like that awful Wormtail, who I couldn't stand).

I guess the moral is that most people have a little evil, or at least a little good, in them... very few people are static.

Eyes You are the sweetest Slytherin I ever knew of.I would even put up with Draco for you.

Sirena I feel Professor Snape from Slytherin is one of the sweetest characters in the entire novel.

The character analysis of Snape can go on and on.J.K.Rowling deserves a treat for creating a character like him.

He proves that gray is not all that bad.It doesn't have to be all black and white.

I feel sorry for him.He is simple,doesn't have the arrogance of being good like James Potter,suffers from low confidence and ends up losing the girl.

He kind of hates Harry because he is James's son.He obviously sees a lot of James in Harry.At the same time he died for Harry because he is Lily's son.

Love like that is humbling.He was some one who Dumbledore trusted entirely.Considering Dumbledore was one of the greatest wizards ever alive that should say something.

I am not a Slytherin lover generally but Snape and Bellatrix(I hope I got her name right) are proofs that bad people can turn into good people.

Trust in humanity increases in leaps and bounds by reading about such characters.:-)

SirenaBlusera agony auntThe invisible cloak was one of the Deathly Hallows ("reliquias de la muerte" in Spanish) which belonged to Ignotus Peverell, one of three Peverell brothers.

Invisibility is nice, but I've always wished I could apparate. I'm not sure if it works for long distances but if I could have one magic power, that would be it. And a flying broomstick... of course being invisible would be a good idea, because flying around on a broom would attract a lot of unwanted attention.

SirenaBlusera is verified as being by the original poster of the question

SirenaBlusera agony auntThat's a good point about how most fans of the series would like to think of themselves as possessing the qualities prized by Godric Gryffindor. Most people I know who have read the books, when asked, always say without hesitation, "I'd be in Gryffindor!"

Objectively, I think that I posess more of the Slytherin qualities... I WISH I were more courageous, but I think I possess more perseverance and determination. However, it really puts me off that some Slytherins have a superficial attitude toward muggle-borns. (Like you said, not ALL Slytherins are prejudiced... the potions master, Horace Slughorn, was a former Slytherin and all of his favorite students tend to be muggle-born :) )

I would probably wind up in Gryffindor, because I'd ask the sorting hat to put me there. It's known to take your preference into account. :)

A female reader, anonymous, writes (17 December 2008):

Uhm, I am ridiculously into Harry Potter. =) Beyond anyone I've personally known, but honestly it suits me well. I am a sucker for fantasy literature, and you probably wouldn't say I looked like an HP fan, but I really am completely obsessed.

And I'm going to assess myself accordingly, to actually think out which House I'd be in.

[Alphabetical order, ftw. And note that all individual/groups of magical human beings are referred to as wizard(s) for the purpose that I believe the term 'witch' to be misleading and derogatory.]

Gryffindor;

Typical of a Harry Potter fan, I've always 'picked' or imagined myself to be in Gryffindor. I'm pretty sure most fans, and those who are particularly in love with the trio, do the same. Although Gryffindor is an awesome, chivalrous, and brave group o' wizards, I think it's safe to say that there is self-righteous reasoning when it comes to Gryffindor. As in, I'm sure we all would very much like to believe that we would be extremely courageous in a wizarding war or something of the like, but I wonder just how many self-proclaimed Gryffindors would actually prove to be as Gryffindory as they claim. And I don't mean this in a doubtful way, I genuinely wonder how many of us would be Gryffindors. As far as myself, I would most likely tell the Sorting Hat that I wanted to be in Gryffindor. If the Weasleys were there, I desire it very much.

Hufflepuff;

Helga Hufflepuff's whole thing was about not judging the students upon blood status, nerve, or natural intelligence – wizards are wizards to her. I really do admire this plain disregard to prejudice/favoritism. And also, Hufflepuff typically has the reputation of the leftover pile. I wouldn't tag it as something like that, but essentially, it is for the students that may not particularly have a niche as of yet when it comes to magic or natural tendency. I really wouldn't know if I would be put into Hufflepuff, yet, I am sure I would not ask for it. I like a bit of glamour, you know, something to set me aside from anything else. Tsk, tsk, I know.

Ravenclaw;

Ah, Ravenclaws, the intelligent or adept wizards. Somehow, instead of the stereotypical smart kids i.e. nerds, etc., I have observed that Ravenclaw has a somewhat cool factor when it comes to choosing a house. And when I say choose, I mean that I perceive that HP fans will often outright choose Ravenclaw even though if you happen to think about it, typical secondary school students who had a passion for learning would perhaps be outcasts. Aside from this, I have yet to determine or legitimately look into whether or not said intelligence or cleverness is looked upon as a prominent quality that is already displayed, or whether the Hat chooses one for Ravenclaw if it believes that they have the potential to have a 'ready mind.' (Hm, interesting.) As far as I am concerned, if my suspicions that some of us would not in the long run have Gryffindorish qualities and if this was true about myself, I believe the Hat would just as soon place me in Ravenclaw. Although this may be another of those self-justifying claims. But I personally think I would sooner crave knowledge than power. Which brings me to...

Slytherin;

So, we have reached probably the most controversial of the Hogwarts Houses: Slytherin! It is my impression, and I am quite sure, that most view Slytherin to just be the House that 'most of the bad guys come out of.' This is essentially true. But literally, has anyone discussed the qualities that the Sorting Hat defines as that of Slytherin nature? "Those cunning folk use any means / To achieve their ends." And then so on in the other two songs, like pure ancestry and 'those of great ambition.' So, actually – before we even know Malfoy that well – Slytherin isn't so bad. The song from Philosopher's Stone (the one I just quoted) merely states that Slytherins will go at lengths to get what they want. Ambitious, so we are told; and also we can probably infer that this correlates to a bit of selfishness. Only until later do we really actually find out that the House was established on the fundamental beliefs that all Muggle-borns should not attend the school, and perhaps not even live...Yet, so many people typecast as Slytherin as a bad House. I definitely admit, reviewing given past examples such as Tom Riddle and the likes of his company, that when there are bad wizards they seem to come from Slytherin, but I will not be so ignorant as to say that all Slytherins have prejudice against Muggle-borns. Though most of them do, indeed, come from pure or nearly pure wizarding bloodlines. For my well-being, I would not suggest to the Hat that placing me in Slytherin would be a good idea. I, myself, can identify that when I am around people that have strong wills, and bad ideas that sound oh-so-much-fun, the inner selfish and bad-even-though-I-know-better side of me is fed with plots and schemes. (And, I am in love with Bellatrix Lestrange. If I were in the same grade as her, I'd pick Slytherin. No doubt. But only for Bella.) Naturally, in most cases, I would not choose Slytherin for myself, and neither would the Sorting Hat in my opinion.

So, there goes my semi-analysis of the House qualities and where I fit in. I would not rely on online quizzes to find where you belong; they often associate such minute and irrelevant details such as favourite colours and animals to the Houses, and this is most imprecise. Have a nice day, fellow wizard. =)

Slytherin sounds intriguing, actually, so we have Angle and Sirena in there right now?

I'll have to try the test again later to see if there's any shifting.

Sirena if you turn me into a frog I will become Ron's pet.Naughty thoughts getting into my head...Hee Hee.

All the interesting and funny aunts have gone into HufflePuff.Well Gryffindors get along better with HufflePuff guys anyway.Cedric Diggory was a hufflepuff.

Tisha the movies count too.They are directed so that the essence of the book is not lost.

Irish,Pepper,Diovan,Tisha,TasteOfIndia are having a party in HufflePuff.

UnclePhil,Fade,AskOlderSis are having fun in RavenClaw.

Sirena has crossed over to the dark side.

I am all alone in Gryffindor now.

Please someone take the test and join me in Gryffindor.Getting boring by myself.

Now if I were still in Ravenclaw,I would be a perfect Luna Lovegood.I am the clown of the house.DOINK!(Fade's expression...)

A female reader, SirenaBlusera Mexico +, writes (8 December 2008):

SirenaBlusera is verified as being by the original poster of the question

SirenaBlusera agony auntEach house is known for qualities that are good to have:

Gryffindor is the "best" house because most of the "good guys" are in it, Harry, Hermione, Ron, and Neville.

Typical Gryffindors are brave, daring and chivalrous.

However, Harry's father (James) was a bully but still wound up in Gryffindor. So did that awful Peter (Wormtail) Pettigrew, who was a coward, betrayer and just an all around stinker.

Members of Ravenclaw tend to be witty, gifted and clever and intellectually brilliant. Cho Chang (Harry's ex-girlfriend), Luna ( a little on the intellectually wild side) and professor Flitwick are a few famous members.

Hufflepuffs are typically fair, loyal, friendly and hardworking.

Cedric Diggory (he was in the tri-wizard tournament) was a Hufflepuff, but was also courageous as well as friendly.

Slytherin has a bad reputation because a disproportionate number of bad guys have been in Slytherin... including Lord Voldemort (alias Tom Ryddle).

but remember, the sorting hat wanted to send Harry to Slytherin, but changed its mind when Harry asked not to go there.

Slytherins are cunning, clever, and determined and perseverant.

Most people are in Slytherin because their families were in Slytherin and unfortunately many harbor prejudices against the students from muggle (non-magical) families.

Horace Slughorn, the potions teacher, is a Slytherin, and a positive character, except for the fact that he used house-elves to test his wine to make sure it wasn't poisoned. I liked him until he did that.

Bugs,

I think you should be proud to be a Ravenclaw.

Cho, Parvati (Padma's sister), and let's not forget Luna, and all Ravenclaw... witty, intellectual and smart.

If you don't like what you got, remember, the sorting hat will also take YOUR PREFERENCES into account. :)

I got Slytherin but I think I would ask to go to Gryffindor. :)

Tisha-1 agony auntI simply couldn't resist this thread, too many fun aunts here. I haven't read the books but does going to the movies count?

I tested as 85 Hufflepuff and second at 83 is Ravenclaw. I like the sound of all of them, well maybe not Slytherin, too much cunning thinking required there....

So there's a trend to the Hufflepuff house, roomies!

And oldersister, Gryffindor is the cool house! I would have guessed you for Ravenclaw though.

Thanks for the link Sirena, that test was interesting to take!

Yay!! So proud to be a hufflepuff! Diovan, Pepper...so happy to be in such a great house with you both. lol Remember while the houses have strengths in specific areas, Hufflepuffs are strong in all areas. We are sensibly brave, when we need to be, we work hard for what we want..whatever we get, we do justly deserve. And let not forget, we are loyal to the core. I think that should evoke some pride in us. Stick out your chests, fellow Hufflepuff girls (keep your eyes in your head, Phil...ha! j/k ) and let's muster up some Hufflepuff pride! heehee

Hey AskOlderSis,

Gryffindor is the best.Harry Potter and his friends Ron and Hermione are there in that house.They are not only clever,witty and funny but very courageous and daring as well.Now who wouldn't like to be swashbuckling through adventures eh?They have the best and most thrilling of adventures.Ravenclaw characters like Cho and Parvati(who is incidentally Indian) are pretty and intelligent.Harry and Ron were attracted to them.Give me an adventure any day instead of guys going moony eyed over me.Ha Ha.

Still want to trade?Though it is not allowed by the rules of Hogwarts,the magic school.
