Why do you think that is? I realise it may seem late in the day but I have become fascinated by this and feel that now I would like to investigate further.

For what it's worth, January tends to be the busiest month on DearCupid.

It's the New Year and a time for change. Most people want to change things about themselves they don't like or feel like they want to work on themselves and grow. A boyfriend or girlfriend can get in the way of personal growth.
This, of course, is a theory... but it makes sense. The New Year can get people doing some serious thinking. Many people see this time as a time for change. Perhaps that is why there are more break up's in January?
Just a theory.

Maybe it's just the new start to a year and people want to make changes and make a fresh start. Who knows but I can see why. Plus, Christmas can be very stressful for some couples and they end up breaking up afterwards.
