forgetmenot agony auntYeah, you're still a virgin by most peoples standards. I used to think that virginity was just til you're penetrated with a penis but in a way I don't anymore. I don't feel that rape counts and I don't think lesbians who've never had sex with a man (or strap on) are neccisarily virgins either. I guess it's hard to class but I don't know that the label is as important as society makes it out to be.

Of course you're still a virgin (at least in any sane culture...good luck if you're a part of a culture where women are considered little more than a man's property).

A female reader, stina United States +, writes (6 December 2006):

stina agony auntHi Anon,

I totally agree with Nic. Girls can break their hymen by doing all sorts of things that are not related to sex in the least bit - like wearing a tampon or riding a bike. Just because the hymen is broken doesn't mean that you are no longer a virgin. Even things that are sexual, like being fingered, doesn't make you stop being a virgin. Once you have intercourse, that's when you aren't a virgin anymore.

Take care.
