Worried About My Height

A female United Kingdom, anonymous writes:

Hi,

I've recently been feeling very concious about my height.

I've always been one of the tallest, but now I'm worried, I'm going to be small.

My immediate family are all average height(father 5'8'' and mother 5'6''), but my grandfather, both uncles, and one aunt(on my mothers side) are exceptionally tall.

I'm female, and 14 years old, nearly 15.I'm about 5'7''. I have grown about a centimeter in the last six months, and am scared that i have stopped growing.

Does anyone know if most teenager's grow during their mid-late teens, and does anyone know how much by?

I'd love to be 5'9'', but do you think I could get there?

xx

From one short person to a tall person, well to me you are tall.I tried everything to make myslf tall.I used to drink loads of milk and do stretching exercise.I only did the stretching exercises due to my sisters telling me i will end up a dwarf if i didnt.Well none of this works anyway apart from getting a bad back.I mean when i was younger i was the shortest out of my family and i was always the one noticed first especially if i was at the front. My sisters were usually the worst at tormenting me like puyying things high up and me needing a chair to get them down.My brother was different he helped alot. But we are all made different has it would be pretty boring otherwise.

You are complaining about being 5'7.Well try being 4'10 and not being able to reach things.I always need chairs to help me.My family was a nightmare always taking the mickey out of me while they were much taller.I was also the second eldest out of 6 kids.Could you imagine it,i had to have my clothes all taken up and i had my sisters hand me downs.Even now i am an adult and i still have to get help in the supermarket and help at home. Both of my 2 kids ar taller than me.I was apparently the same height as my aunt and grandmother and grandad. That was the only time i was happier being this height and being with them.I didnt seem to stand out that much.My sisters used to call us the short bunch when we were together. It was just great having company with people my own height which is goos instead of having to keep looking up to talk to people.I know there are shorter people than me but come on 4'10 isnt very nice.So accept it

I have also always been worried about my height.I am a short woman and never got to grow has tall has my family.I mean you try telling your younger sister off when we were younger. She has 7 ins on me i was older than her by 8 yrs and i was always ribbed about getting a stool to reach her.Family photo's are a laygh has i am always in front of them.It was a pain growing up being this short but we have to live with what we have.At 5'7 you are well over 6ins taller than me so appreciate it.

I dont think drinking mild really helps,i used to try this when i was younger but didnt work.I am a full grown adult at 43 i reached a height of 4'11.So i would totally accept this height you have. For a start you have a good 8 ins on me.The only thing i have to look forward to is not shrinking too much.I stopped growing at 12 i had to watch all my sisters and brother get taller. They all were a good 6 ins at least. My brother being the tallest.I was told that my height is the same has my nan she was 5'2 and now has short as me.It is great when we are together she seem to relate to me more so now being this height. When i was younger she was always taller than me but now we are the same.So we are both shrinking together. My parents were 5'7 and 5'8 so i dont know why i was that bit shorter than my sisters.Never mind hey just embrace your height.

5'7" hey you are way over my head im 5'3" and 15 and ive stopped growing...i only know this as I had a back brace and the only reason I was allowed out was because my bones were almost mature in my back.

On average a female is 5'5", 5'6" so you are perfectly normal.

Sorry what is wrong with being 5ft 7...seems very normal to me. Try being 5ft 1 and a quarter and standing on seats to put your luggage in the overhead lockers on a plane. I have more leg room but to be honest what are you worrying about?

I recently found out I have an extra vertebrae in my spine which has given me the advantage of an extra inch and a half all my life - yes I've really felt the difference. My best friend at school was 6ft 3 at 18, being 5ft 7 is really not a big deal and the fact you want to be taller is something I don't understand. I realise this is a big deal to you but imagine what it is like to have one breast or no hair, I would have done anything, become small, fat, thin, big to not see my Mum loose her breast, be cut up the way she was or see her with no hair and suffer the way she did. Be realistic and accept who you are. And stop thinking about things that really aren't important. You are 5ft 7 so accept who you are...think about things that are more important. Sorry to be harsh, but when you've seen someone who cared so much about their appearance and watch them die with no dignity your plight about your height seems rather hollow.

You have got nothing to worry about, girls usually dont stop growing until they're about 19. its different for everybody, when my mother was 14 she was about 5'8 and now she's 6'0, but my aunt on the other hand was 5'4 at 16 and hasnt grown an inch. 5'7 is already above average and if you have tall people in your family chances are you'll keep growing.

good luck

kenny agony auntI don't think you have got anything to worry about here, for a girl 5,7 is over average. Alot of girls would have to put their high heels on to reach this height. Also you are still only 14 so i should imagine you have still got abit of growing to do yet.

Good luck x

Well, there's one thing for certain. There's not a thing you can do to change your height -- it was destined to be whatever it's going to be at the time you were conceived and very few things can affect height during childhood, short of serious vitamin or nutrition deficiencies. My advise to you is to enjoy who you are at whatever height God destined you to be and wear lots of heels. I'm sure you have many other wonderful qualities and attributes -- it's time for you to focus on them. Best of luck.

TasteofIndia agony aunt5'7''!! Well, you outgrew me!! You're an inch taller than me. You're only fourteen and you very well might put on those extra two inches that you crave. You won't stop growing for at least another 4-6 years, so don't worry.

But even if you stay at 5'7'' - I'm teling you, it's not a bad height. You're not at ALL short... no, no. 5'7'' is a little above average. You're already tall!

I really wouldn't worry about this yet. You still have plenty of time to lengthen and you're already pretty tall. I think you'll be just fine...

mcbirdie agony auntYou may grow a bit more, depending on your genetics--ask your family members when they stopped growing to get an idea.

But really...being worried about it doesn't help. We all end up how we were intended. I'm not a lick over 5'0 and my life hasn't ended. Enjoy how you look (which, by the way, is still taller than average) and rock the heels.

Best of luck.

Melanne agony auntI'm only 5 foot 2 and believe the best things come in small packages. I know it must be worrying for you since you want to be tall, but try not too be too focussed on your site since you have other attributes like your personality. If you are really that worried then maybe you could see a doctor? I know they say drinking milk helps because of the calcium levels.
