Some of the upmarket hotels do charge for every single item that are considered hotel property (as opposed to complimentary service). I accidentally carried a washcloth with me down to the lobby as I was checking out of a Marriot hotel in Boston, USA, and by the time I had my bill, US$6 was already added on my bill for the washcloth (which was sitting on my dirty suitcase). I returned the washcloth immediately, which I meant to anyways, and they deleted that charge instantly. The same in Novotel downtown in Bangkok, Thailand.Interestingly, smaller and cheaper hotels/motels have included "likely to be missing items" as part of their operational cost. Also, some larger posh hotels in resort areas add more costs for things that are supposed to be their basic service. Such as 'provision of towels/toiletries/complimentary tea/coffee sachets", "turning bed covers", etc. You can ask them that you don't want these extra costs when you check in. Silly but true. So in answer to your question, call or email the hotel and apologize for mistakenly taking the towels. But, if the cost of sending the towels back is just as much as [or more than] what they charge them, just keep the towels and pay your friend.I hope this little thing did not make you worry and forget about the fun you had while on holiday ;-)Cat

I just wanted some extra reassurance if possible - i've done a google search and a lot of sites say that most hotels now charge your credit card direct if towels are missing~(i wouldn't mind so much but its my girlfriends credit card details) - do you think this is a scare tactic putting this on google? I'm now thinking that if i draw it to their attention however, they may be even more likely to charge! what do you reckon? just ignore it? (sorry to sound so nuerotic, but my girlfriends been fretting about it), Many thanks.

They will not charge you for them!

They don't directly charge you, but increased room rates are a hotel's way of making back their money from (accidentally) stolen items.
If you want to, send them back. They'll just toss them in the wash with the others. Doubt they've noticed they're gone though.

Mate everyone steals hotel towels, im pretty sure its almost tradition to do so. Think of it as a free souvenir. But if you really want to send it back i doubt the hotel nor the police will do anything about a pair of towels.
