A female Estonia age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Dear Cupid.

I know this isn't about sex or relationship but it's generally about my body.

When I cut the nails of my big toes, I cut them as far as I can and when i do that, this horrible smell comes out and I think it's because in an already sirless shue, absolutely no air can get to that place. But when I let it out in the open and wash it, the smell still doesn't go away and the smell of shampoo and soap just covers it.

What is that smell exactly, am I right about why it is? Is it an illness like toe fungus? Might it turn into an illness if i let it go too far or has it already gone too far?

SirenaBlusera agony auntIt doesn't sound like anything horribly serious, but if I were you, I'd see a doctor. It's probably bacteria, or a fungus.

Feet are gross!! Anyone's feet. I don't like 'em and never did.

A female reader, Laura1318 Malaysia +, writes (23 May 2010):

Laura1318 agony auntIn medical terms, toenail fungus is also known as Onychomycosis which is a very common problem in all those who ignore the hygiene of their toenails.

Microscopic fungi also known as dermatophytes are the main cause of toenail infection and fungus.

People can get affected by these fungi while staying at damp spots such swimming pools, shower stalls and gym.

The other reasons for toenail fungus include prolonged wearing of shoes and socks, abnormal level of pH in the skin and not drying the feet after exercise or bathing.

Sharing personal items and footwear with others are also a risk factor when it comes to toenails infection and fungus.

You can use Tee tree oil, olive oil or listerine mouthwash to clean and disinfect.

Honest Answer agony auntAll it is excess bacteria that is trapped between the toenail and the toe. Its actually harmless. There are products out in the market that target this bacteria.

Good Luck!

MissKin agony auntalso! don't cut your nails really really far back. they're not meant to be cut all the way back. it can lead to impurities getting under your nail in some cases.

A female reader, MissKin United Kingdom +, writes (23 May 2010):

MissKin agony auntUmm i think it could be a fungus. u saying it 'comes out when you cut your nails'... sounds like it's umm under your nails :s i'm not a foot-expert but i suggest seeing a doctor. It's probably not a really bad illness, you could be over-cleansing too btw. dont use shampoo on your feet hun. Just make an appointment to see your Gp and don't be hesitant. it's important and you shouldnt be shy about making sure it's nothing :) they'll also be able to help you prevent it.

it doesn't sound normal.
