Because my wife is a great navigator. I hand her the map and do what she tells me. In 25+ years, we've seldom gone wrong.

Because finding the place on your own is a lot more fun.

It sounds like you have an opinion on this already. So what is it and why are you asking this old, tired question?
There have been some similar posts recently from a woman who sounds very angry and upset with "men." I get the sense that there's one man in particular that is the "problem."
Asking generalized, stereotyped and judgmental questions like this indicates you don't really want an answer. You just want to vent.
So vent, already. Put the whole package of problems together in a well-thought out and complete list of grievances but don't dole out your little bits of anger in questions you aren't going to bother to read the answers to. You've already made up your mind, from what I've read.

That is a very old and very tired cliche. I don't know any man who has refused to consult a map. My husband checks one every time he travels to a new destination. Having driven it once he memorizes the route.

For starters this totally relates to the question of why do men always have to be right. I think that is the case when a guy won't ask for directions if because he is determined to show that he can do it on his own. There is an emphasis on males to be independent so that is most likely what is trying to be shown here.

Because of rigid masculinity roles teaching men that asking for help is weak and that they have to be independent and strong at all times. I think it feels emasculating if you live in that kind of system.

I must say though, surely one of you have GPS on your cellular phones? Just use that.

Lots of men think that other men don't ask for directions and they don't want to be anything less than other men. This basically comes down to upbringing and what you are taught, gender-specifically. Same deal with women who don't feel like they are feminine unless they can cook a meal.

I know plenty of men that would ask for directions, again it is just that everybody is different and some people are just to stubborn to admit that they are lost so they just carry on until the come to a familiar place, I guess it is just a pride thing!
