Could be peer pressure, maybe shes sexually active (gross i know possible).
It could be the whole dressing up thing that girls tend to go through when they are younger.
Maybe shes trying to attract a boy that she likes.
Why dont you ask her?

reader, anonymous, writes (14 November 2010): Um, well some girls choose to wear them to avoid panty lines. Like when they're wearing tight pants or if they're wearing white pants. Thongs don't create that "double bum" look. At least that is what my older sister told me.
I do think 12 is too young to be wearing them anyway. I know people that have gotten pretty serious infections from wearing them as well.

12 year olds make decisions with very little depth of understanding. She's likely sewn together a few fragments of information, filling in the connecting tissue with her own thoughts and arrived at an answer. At 12 my sister announced she wanted to be a stripper.... it was kind of funny then, but not really. Thankfully, that was an number of 12 year old "goals" she never reached...

reader, anonymous, writes (14 November 2010): Im 13, and I dont have any thongs. I steal a pair from my sister [dont worry they're clean] only when I wear sweatpants so that my underwear doesnt show. I find them uncomfortable. Only a few girls that I know of in my grade [8th] wear thongs. But in your sisters case, I think she just wants to feel older. I would be way too embarassed to ask my mom if I could a thong. But what did your parents say? Did they say she could get one? What was the reaction?

 She wants to be grown up. I think G-strings on a girl her age is not a good idea. If you have to ask your parents what underwear you are allowed to wear, its a deffinate indication that she's too young!
My friends and I started wearing thongs when we are 14/15. 12 is too young.
