Why did my friend act weird after making a funny joke?

A female Canada age 26-29, anonymous writes:

My friend was acting strange today. We were talking about this Halloween costume contest at my school and she was talking about how the winner got a free dinner from the principal. I said something like "Oh, he'd probably take them to McDonald's or something" since our principal's really cheap.

She then proceeded to jokingly write a "dialogue" on a piece of paper between the winner and our principal. Went something like this:

Winner: Yay I won! Now I can go to McDonalds with the principal!

Principal: Congratulations! Let's go to McDonalds!

(At McDonalds)

Principal: I'm gonna order a large Diet Coke with a burger.

Winner: What should I get?

Principal: You can only get something under $5.

Winner: But I wanted to get a croissant with a coffee!

Principal: That's a bad choice.

-Winner runs home crying-

And then she gave it to me to read, and I had a good laugh, and SHE PROCEEDED TO DO SOMETHING REALLY WEIRD.

She took it back and almost frantically told me "DON'T TELL ANYBODY I WROTE THIS!!", I was like "Okay", and she got out an eraser and started to erase it like a crazy person. I jokingly commented on how she was "erasing her masterpiece" and she said something like "People will be insulted by this".

Okay so at this point I'm kinda weirded out, right? That's not even the end of it.

She'd stop to check if it was still somewhat visible and then erase it again for good measure. Then she RIPPED IT UP. And I don't just mean just a little *rip rip*. I mean she folded it, ripped it, ripped those, put them sideways, ripped, ripped again, erased them all, and then ripped each individual shred into smaller shreds until it looked like confetti.

And then she went and threw it into the garbage.

She comes back and I'm so weirded out I don't say anything. I just pretend I'm paying attention to what the teacher's saying, while underneath I'm trying to process just WHY my friend got so up in a dander 'cause of one dialogue thingy. It wasn't even bad. Like at all.

Anyone have any ideas on what made her act so weird? It's really freaking me out.

And if it helps, today she seemed less happy than usual. She's usually really upbeat but today she wasn't as energetic as usual. She's also kinda religious (to be specific, she's Muslim).

Honeypie agony auntShe obviously thought it was really inappropriate to write what she did.

I would guess she is a GOOD student?

It might be a religious thing. Anyways, Just let it go. If she felt it was wrong, then it was wrong ( for her).

CindyCares agony aunt " you don't think the dialogue was that bad "- but SHE did. She has a different personality and a different upbringing than you. What for you is normal , for her might have been very daring. Young Muslims ( in general, of course ) have a stricter upbringing and are taught to respect, even fear, authority figures much more than in other cultures. You 'll never, or very seldom, see a Muslim girl joking and teasing all chummy and companionable with her grandparents, as Western girls do.

And her preoccupation might have been excessive, but not so weird after all. This happened during class, right ? imagine if she had been caught ... and sent to the office of that same principal she had made fun of , and called cheap. An embarassing moment, don't you think ?

So why did she wrote that dialoge ? Aw come on, don't you ever have your " rebel " or " naughty " moments ? I bet you do, and your friend does too. But she took it back right away, because very probably for her being reproached by a teacher or "getting in trouble " at school carries heavier consequences at home than it would for you.

@Shadow Rose and Aunt Honesty:

Thanks for your replies :) Yes, she's usually a super well-behaved girl but I didn't think the dialogue was that bad, which is why it freaked me out so much. And if she felt so bad about it, why'd she write it in the first place then? But thanks, both of you! :D

aunt honesty agony auntMy guess is that she felt she had said something wrong in her note and took it a little to far. She may have been scared that the teacher saw it and showed it to the principal which would have embarrassed her. I wouldn't read to much in to her behaviour as she was obviously having a very bad day if she wasn't herself.

Shadow Rose agony auntI'm sure she was afraid she'd get in trouble for badmouthing the principal and wanted to erase all evidence.

Is she usually a good student/person? People who tend to always do the right thing freak out more if they've done something bad..
