A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

I'm not sure if anyone can help.. but about 2 months ago I started a diet.

Reason why? I am 5"2 and I (did) weigh 11 stone 10 pounds. (164 lbs) which is around 1 stone overweight (14 lbs) for my height. I decided to go on weight watchers diet specifically and also do a lot of exercise.

First month was great. I lost 10 pounds in total which got me down to 11 stone, (154 lbs) however, for the past month I have stuck to the diet really well and also done a lot of exercise but I haven't even lost a single pound.

Why is this because I am still 1 stone - 1.5 stone overweight (14 - 21 lbs) (medically) so my body still has fat to burn.. so why isn't it shedding if I am doing everything possible?

please help

the trick is to trick your body... your body gets used to walking 45 min a day and so forth.. used to this diet and that.. so if your walking 45 min a day at a pace of 3.2 hike it up to 60 min at 3.9mph... that is a brisk speed but changing pace in any excersise is always the key. also... if you are only walking 2-3 times a week move it up to 5-6... it give your metabolizm a boost and you should start burning again.. remember that high fiber foods burn more calories... and keep up the good work.

There are a couple of things mentioned that are spot on. First for weight loss to happen you need to have less calories coming in then what you are burning. Each pound of weight takes a deficit of 3500 calories.

I would suggest first that you take all your measurements to see how your body is responding to the way you eat and your exercise. Muscle gained does have weight, although 5 lbs of muscle is certainly smaller then 5 lbs of fat.

Next on your workout routine, cardio is good for burning fat but you also need some weight training to increase muscle mass. More muscle, more fat burning on the end of this when you reach your ideal weight.

Also last piece of advice is to do 6 smaller meals each day within your calorie intake range. It will keep your metabolism fired up and help your weight loss as well. Doing this will create the lifestyle changes to reach the goal of optimal health.

maybe you need to go to your gp and he could help you a bit more. He may referre you to a dietician they could help you a bit more in person. You may want to do a couple of days of a food diary a write absolutley everything you eat for three days down and maybe who ever you see can see where you could be going wrong. I hope this is a bit more help. :-) sorry sweet. X

hey there, my name is ally. I work with dieticians. Dietetic assistant. Any way. When you start dieting its great cause you loose the weight so fast been there my self. As i weighed in at 11st 7. I lost ten pounds in two weeks yeah great but it start to slows down and weight becomes harder to loose. Dont waste your money on w/w by counting points its a big con you need to burn more calories then you consume. You need to have a balanced healthy 3 meals a day. If you need a snack between pick at a apple or pear etc. You dont need to go mad on spinning classes as they guy below says what a load of rubbish. All you need is 30mins of cardio work out a day. You could go four fast walking, buy your self a dance dvd, recommend, if you cant afford the gym. And the weight will come off eventtally. I have lost two stone just by being careful. To be a healthy weight for your height is between 7st 9 - 9st 4. I hope this helped. Good luck! X

A male reader, blazee United Kingdom +, writes (18 April 2009):

blazee agony auntthe best thing for you to do to lose weight is spinning classes, or if not that interval training.

interval training basically means that, say if your on a treadmill you will run one minute fast one minute slow. It builds your hart muscle since it has to work at diffrent paces and burns calories easily, however i would recomend spinning since it burns major amounts of calories. I know a lot of people that go to weight watchers and it dosnt work for them past the first couple of weeks. eat healthy and watch your calorie intake. keep it below 1500 a day. Also eat grapefruits and drink green tea, both of which improve your metabolism rate; the rate you burn caolries.

All the best x

be patient. you need to make lifestyle changes, not just diet cos you dont want to put weight back on when you end up reaching your ideal weight and you stop the diet
