k_c100 agony auntALWAYS ask for help if you dont know how to do something. You have a window when you are a new employee to ask LOTS of questions, so that you learn everything you need to know. When you are new, your boss and other employees expect you to ask questions because you are new and they understand you will need help at first.

However if you sit there quiet and dont ask, they will presume you know what you are doing so they will be more angry when they find out that you are doing nothing, and when you do something, you do it wrong.

It is always better to ask questions than get something wrong. If you ask questions you will look enthusiastic, and it will seem to your boss that you are a good employee because you are interested in learning more and are keen to learn. That is a good thing - so always ask questions, the more questions the better! And dont be afraid to go to your boss or line manager, because they are the ones who are supposed to be helping you and training you.

If you dont ask questions you will soon find yourself avoiding doing any work, because you dont know how to do it. So you will end up fired because your boss thinks you are lazy and dont do anything.

Ask for help, every day, as many times as you need to. No-one will mind helping the new girl, they will be pleased to show you how to do something. No-one will like the lazy girl that does no work though, so be brave and ask some questions before your window of opportunity has passed.

I hope this helps and good luck!

Hey there,

It's absolutely normal to be nervous when you start a new job. I think asking for help is almost essential when you start a new job. In my opinion, if you don't ask questions you're giving the impression that you are a 'know it all' and are too good to ask questions. Obviously this is not your intention but it can come off the wrong way. Chances are if you don't ask questions then you have a greater chance of messing up because you didn't ask what to do when you were stuck.

Don't be afraid that people are judging for you asking questions. It's okay to ask questions! That's how we learn new things and get better at our skills.

In the jobs I've had, employers ALWAYS preferred that we asked questions rather than continue without knowing what we were doing and worrying ourselves.

Asking people questions is also a good way to start relationships with new colleagues. You might find someone to trust in your new setting who can act as a mentor to help you develop your knowledge.

Take a breath for a minute and calm down would be the best thing to do first off. Don't stress it, girl!

Best of luck,

j
