A female South Africa age 26-29, anonymous writes:

Dear Auntz. I have always told myself that i will never date a guy who describes me as 'cute'. And here i am now dating that guy. He is very nice and sweet to me. We went out twice so far so we just started dating.

I am really attracted to him physically and emotionally and my friends can see that too. But i still do not get the meaning of me being as 'cute'..because i would normally define cute as: ugly but acceptable.

What do guys mean they call a girl cute?

olderthandirt agony auntWhen I use the word 'cute' it is usually to describe a young women that looks nice and is usually young looking. I supose it could be used as a negative as is, "Oh that's real cute!" to describe a prank that wenr wrong but I don't think I've ever heard it as a word along with ugly. Fret not young lady it was probably used as a compliment.

CindyCares agony aunt Cute as ugly but acceptable ? Then you are reinventing English.

Cute means :" attractive in a pretty, endearing way ".

In Northern American usage, it also means sexually ,physically appealing ( although in a less evident, flashy way than " hot " ).

Mark1978 agony auntCute is a term used often by young people to describe someone they find attractive, sexy, etc.

Although "cute" is also a term to describe babies, kittens and new born puppies, in the context of men and women it means physically attractive. Not "ugly but acceptable".

Some women don't like the term, in my experience, those aged, say, 25 and over. Possibly because they wish to be taken more seriously and prefer a more grown up term such as "beautiful", "Smart" or "having a great figure" rather than "Hot/Cute/Fit".

A female reader, mystiquek United States +, writes (22 June 2014):

mystiquek agony auntI have always been called cute. I'm just a little thing and have been told I'm extremely funny and have a fantastic personality. My last boyfriend told me I was the cutest thing he'd ever seen..I'd never think for a minute that cute means ugly but acceptable. I dont' know where you are getting that meaning from, but I'd say it way off. Whats wrong with being cute? So if it bothers you then don't date him. Cute is an affectionate term where I am from, certainly not ugly.

according to the dictionary cute is:

cute adjective \'kyüt\

: having a pleasing and usually youthful appearance

: attractive in a sexual way

: clever in an appealing way

where do you get ugly out of that??
